This noise is called acoustic feedback and is

caused by
poorly
balanced
volume
control
settings
on
the
speaker
amplifier. Poor location

panel, close
handset
proximity

mis-wire
are
just
some

the
other
causes.

term
privacy
relates
to
a switch which is installed on certain
types
of
handset
to
prevent
the
internal
buzzer
from
activating.
Secrecy
of
conversation
prevents
other
users
from
'listening
in'
on
your
conversation
(2-wire,
3-wire
and video
only).
