THE INSTALLER MUST READ AND UNDERSTAND THIS MANUAL BEFORE FITTING THIS
APPLIANCE.
IMPORTANT: Do not under any circumstances switch on the immersion heater before the
primary tank is fi ed.
Serious damage may resu t to the heater in addition to danger of persona injury and damage
to property if the heater is switched on when dry.
IMPORTANT: A ways iso ate e ectrica supp ies and if necessary the water supp y before
working on the unit.
IMPORTANT: A ways fi and pressurise the secondary (domestic) tank first, fi ing and
pressurising the primary (heating) tank may resu t in crushing damage to the domestic tank.
IMPORTANT: ACV recommends the use of a corrosion inhibitor in the primary (heating)
system. The warranty wi be inva idated if upon inspection it is found that a tank has fai ed
due to corrosion caused by the ack of an inhibitor.
IMPORTANT: Ensure that the air is purged from the primary jacket using the air vent on the top
centre of the cy inder.

Principl :
ACV Tanks (tank in tank) compris of two conc ntric wat r cylind rs. Tank (A) is manufactur d in solid
stainl ss st l and contains th dom stic wat r for us at th sanitary hot wat r outl ts. Th xt rior tank
(B) is manufactur d from STW 22 carbon st l, this tank holds th primary h ating fluid which is circulat d
from th boil r, as th primary fluid pass s b tw n th two tanks th h at is transf rr d to th dom stic
wat r.
Op ration:

2. CONSTRUCTION
Internal tank:
This tank is the heart of the assembly; it has to withstand the corrosive nature of mains water and the
temperature variations of stored water whilst working at high pressures. It is manufactured from solid
stainless steel and welded in an inert Argon atmosphere (Argon Arc). Before being assembled the tank
material is subjected to a rigorous cleaning and passivation process to increase its resistance to
corrosion. The inner tank is also corrugated which allows it to freely expand and contract with temperature
and pressure variations, shrugging off any lime scale deposits. Due to this, the tank does not require an
inspection cover to facilitate the removal of lime.
Insulation:
High density injected polyurethane foam – 50mm thick. Containing no CFC’s, having a GWP =
0.00025 and ODP = 0
Jacket:
The tank is covered in a co-polymer polypropylene jacket, this is a plastic material that offers a high
resistance to impact and is also aesthetically pleasing.
Controls:
The tanks come complete with a control and high limit thermostat built into the top cover of the jacket.
Thermostat control:
The control is graduated from 1 to 5, 1 is minimum = 60°C and 5 is maximum = 85°C.
In the case of a prolonged absence precautions must be taken to ensure there is no risk of freezing. The
tank is delivered with the thermostat pre-set to a minimum of 65°C to eliminate the risk of legionella
bacteria forming and complies with the recommendations of the World Health Organisation. The
thermostat control dial can be removed to allow lower temperature settings, see sketch and description
below.
Modifying the IMIT thermostat:
1. Remove the control dial.
2. Take out the metal spring stop.
3. Replace the control dial.

3. INSTALLATION (130 to 300 Smart Paks)
Domestic:
1. Connect 22mm x 1" FI BSP adaptors to cold water inlet (blue) and hot
water outlet (red) connections on tank.
installed correctly, cold/hot inlet ports are marked on body, i.e. hot to H cold
to C outlet to MIX.
Note:- discharge pipework to tundish is not supplied.
3. Orientate mixing valve hot water outlet to desired position and tighten.
4. Connect Check/Expansion valve to cold water inlet pipe (A) and orientate
Expansion vessel connection to suit installation.
5. Connect Pressure Reducing Valve to Check/Expansion valve (a light
smear of jointing compound to PTFE ring will ease assembly) and orientate
to ensure balanced cold water take-off faces either front or rear (blank
supplied if take-off is not to be used).
6. Remove 3/4" black plastic plug from Check/Expansion valve and fit
Expansion Vessel (seal with PTFE tape).
7. Connect Temperature and Pressure relief valve to 1/2" connection and
orientate into position. Do not run drain discharge pipework across top of
tank.
8. Connect both Temperature and Pressure relief valve/Expansion valve
discharge pipework across top of tank.
9. Install Tundish outlet pipework as per Building regulation G3 (for further
guidance refer to controls installation and maintenance instructions).
Flush pipework and commission.
1. Pressure control valve 3.5bar.
2. Expansion vessel 3.5bar.
3. Check/Expansion valve assembly 6bar.
4. Thermostatic mixing valve.
5. Temperature & pressure relief valve 7bar.
6. Tundish.
7. 22mm Myson MPE222 spring return zone valve.
8. Pipe work kit includes:
1 in No. 22mm equal tee.
1 in No. 22mm elbow.
2 in No. 22mm x 1" FI BSP Adaptors.
5 lengths 22mm Copper tube (A to C on drawing).
Note: Secondary return pipework and fittings are not included in
the kit.

Wiring th th rmostat:
To comply with ‘The Building Regulation 1991 G3.6’ the manual reset high limit thermostat must be wired to a
self-closing motorised valve or some other suitable device to shut off the primary flow to the cylinder.

pump or zon valv supplying th unit (not that a spring r turn valv must b conn ct d to th high limit stat
for normal op ration, i. . th valv will b n rgis d to op n by th th rmostat and th n spring clos d wh n th
circuit is brok n). Th switch wir from th pump or valv can b wir d to th tank controls via th 6 pin plug.

nsur that th conn ctions ar wat rtight to avoid any l akag that may go und t ct d and caus xt rnal
corrosion damag to th tank.
Distribution Pr ssur
Th mains wat r supply must b f d to th unit via th suppli d mains kit, this will maintain a maximum
distribution pr ssur of 3.5 Bar.
Purging
Aft r filling and b for using it will b n c ssary to purg air from both th primary (h ating) and
s condary (dom stic) tanks. Th dom stic can b purg d by op ning a hot outl t at th high st point (or
by v nting th t mp ratur and pr ssur r li f valv ), th primary (h ating) tank can b v nt d using th
air v nt locat d on th top of th tank ( nsur v nt is tight n d aft r us ).

Imm rsion H at r
The SmartLineE range of tanks have the faci ity for fitting a 3kW immersion heater for back-up emergency use
when the primary heating fai s not as a permanent form of summer time heating, this heater must be wired to
its own 13 Amp fused spur and as described in the insta ation instructions for Thermco immersion heaters.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN THE IMMERSION HEATER BE SWITCHED ON BEFORE THE
PRIMARY TANK IS FILLED. SERIOUS DAMAGE MAY RESULT TO THE HEATER IN ADDITION TO
DANGER OF PERSONAL INJURY AND DAMAGE TO PROPERTY IF HEATER IS SWITCHED ON WHEN
DRY.

Th primary tank should b ch ck d for a build up of air, this can b purg d using th primary air v nt on
th top of th cylind r. Ch ck th primary syst m pr ssur gaug on th boil r or filling loop and r charg
as n c ssary.
IMPORTANT: If the primary system is being topped up on a regu ar basis there is a risk of corrosion
damage to the cy inder.
Th tank must b fitt d by m ans of scr w d couplings or flang s to allow dismantling and r moval of th
unit. Th s should b fitt d in such a way as to allow asy acc ss.

pip s should b fitt d in accordanc with th r quir m nts and guidanc not s of Building R gulation G3.
Th G3 R quir m nts and Guidanc s ction 3.50 - 3.63 ar r produc d in th following s ctions of this
manual. For discharg pip arrang m nts not cov r d by G3 Guidanc advic should b sought from your
local Building Control Offic r. Any discharg pip conn ct d to th pr ssur r li f d vic s (Expansion Valv
and T mp ratur /Pr ssur R li f Valv ) must b install d in a continuously downward dir ction and in a
frost fr nvironm nt. Wat r may drip from th discharg pip of th pr ssur r li f d vic . This pip

and b fitt d as clos as possibl to, and low r than, th valv , with no mor than 600mm of pip b tw n
th valv outl t and th tundish (Fig. 5 & Tabl 3, pag 10).
Not : To comply with th Wat r Supply (Wat r Fittings) R gulations, th tundish should incorporat a
suitabl air gap.
3.55 Any discharg should b visibl at th tundish. In addition, wh r discharg s from saf ty d vic s may
not b appar nt, .g. in dw llings occupi d by p opl with impair d vision or mobility, consid ration
should b giv n to th installation of a suitabl saf ty d vic to warn wh n discharg tak s plac , .g.

Discharg pip D2
3.56 Th discharg pip (D2) from th tundish should:
(a) hav a v rtical s ction of pip at l ast 300mm long b low th tundish b for any lbows or b nds in
th pip work (s Diagram 1, G3), (Fig. 5, pag 10); and
(b) b install d with a continuous fall th r aft r of at l ast 1 in 200.
3.57 Th discharg pip (D2) should b mad of:
(a) m tal; or
(b) oth r mat rial that has b n d monstrat d to b capabl of saf ly withstanding t mp ratur s of th
wat r discharg d and is cl arly and p rman ntly mark d to id ntify th product and p rformanc
standard ( .g. as sp cifi d in th r l vant part of BS 7291).
3.58 Th discharg pip (D2) should b at l ast on pip siz larg r than th nominal outl t siz of th
saf ty d vic unl ss its total quival nt hydraulic r sistanc xc ds that of a straight pip 9m long, i. . for
discharg pip s b tw n 9m and 18m th quival nt r sistanc l ngth should b at l ast two siz s larg r
than th nominal outl t siz of th saf ty d vic ; b tw n 18 and 27m at l ast 3 siz s larg r, and so on;
b nds must b tak n into account in calculating th flow r sistanc . S figur , tabl and th work d

3.59 Wh r a singl common discharg pip s rv s mor than on syst m, it should b at l ast on pip
siz larg r than th larg st individual discharg pip (D2) to b conn ct d.
3.60 Th discharg pip should not b conn ct d to a soil discharg stack unl ss it can b d monstrat d
that that th soil discharg stack is capabl of saf ly withstanding t mp ratur s of th wat r discharg d, in
which cas , it should:
(a) contain a m chanical s al, not incorporating a wat r trap, which allows wat r into th branch pip
without allowing foul air from th drain to b v ntilat d through th tundish;
(b) b a s parat branch pip with no sanitary applianc s conn ct d to it;
(c) if plastic pip s ar us d as branch pip s carrying discharg from a saf ty d vic th y should b ith r
polybutal n (PB) to Class S of BS 7291-2:2006 or cross link d poly thyl n (PE-X) to Class S of BS 7291-
3:2006; and (d) b continuously mark d with a warning that no sanitary applianc s should b conn ct d to
th pip .

(b) to a trapp d gully with th nd of th pip b low a fix d grating and abov th wat r s al;
(c) downward discharg s at low l v l; i. . up to 100mm abov xt rnal surfac s such as car parks, hard
standings, grass d ar as tc. ar acc ptabl providing that a wir cag or similar guard is position d to
pr v nt contact, whilst maintaining visibility; and
(d) discharg s at high l v l: .g. into a m tal hopp r and m tal downpip with th nd of th discharg
pip cl arly visibl or onto a roof capabl of withstanding high t mp ratur discharg s of wat r and 3m
from any plastic gutt ring syst m that would coll ct such discharg s.
3.63 Th discharg would consist of high t mp ratur wat r and st am. Asphalt, roofing f lt and non-
m tallic rainwat r goods may b damag d by such discharg s.
