carefully. This should you also apply when you learn to drive with your
AddSeat.
If you carefully follow the instructions in this guide, you will learn how to drive
your AddSeat, but you must be careful. If you try to teach yourself without
reading the guide it’s a great risk that you injure yourself. We recommend
that you have an assistant who also has read this guide to help you drive your
AddSeat for the rst time. Make sure tyres are ok and that there are no loose
parts.
Please do not take risks.

Do’s and don’ts
• Behave with good manners when you drive your
addSeat.
• Be careful and considerate of others
• Just drive as fast as is safe to drive, both for you
and those around you. Always drive in turtle
mode, otherwise it is at your own risk!
• Always be prepared to stop, keep in mind that children could make
sudden and unexpected movements.
• Respect pedestrians by always yielding the right of way.
• Avoid startling pedestrians. When approaching from behind, announce
yourself and slow down to walking speed when passing. Pass on the left
whenever possible. When approaching a pedestrian from the front, stay
to the right and slow down to save the pedestrian from unnecessary
concern.
• In heavy pedestrian trafc, slow down and proceed at the pace of
pedestrian trafc. Pass only if there is plenty of room to do so safely.
Do not drive slalom (weave in and out)between pedestrians.
• When driving with other
AddSeat / Segway-
drivers, maintain a safe
distance, identify hazards and obstacles, and do not drive side-by-side
unless there is plenty of room left for pedestrians
• Do not park your AddSeat in a way that blocks pedestrian trafc.
• Cross streets and roads where it is supposed to be doing it. Do not drive
through a red light.
• Only travel on a road when a bike path is not available
or when sidewalk use is not allowed.

Safety tips and guidelines
Your AddSeat has a unique ability to balance and because it is so easy to use
you rapidly become very condent.
BUT please ”Do not drive over your ability!”
If you exceed the balance of your AddSeats such as driving over obstacles,
uneven ground, on slippery surfaces, on loose surfaces or steep hills, you can
quickly lose control causing you to collide, fall over and injure yourself. As with
all types of vehicles, the use of a AddSeat expose you to risk of injury. You can
reduce this risk by following the instructions in this guide, but you can not eli-
minate them completely.
• Read this guide.
• Do not let anyone else use your AddSeat without also having done so.
• Wear a helmet. When you drive your AddSeat you should use a helmet
with chin strap.Use an approved bicycle or skateboard helmet that provi-
des protection for the back of your head.
• Watch over novices carefully. All beginners should use Beginner Mode.
Always drive in turtle mode! You are responsible for Beginner’s safety. Do
not let anyone step on your AddSeat rst time without you or another as-
sistant holds the handlebar rmly. Watch carefully novice until they begin
to become comfortable with how a AddSeat works. Do not let a beginner
use your AddSeat without you having full control of them unless they have
read this guide.
• Avoid slippery surfaces, loose surfaces, steep slopes and obstacles of va-
rious kinds. If you can not avoid these, stop and park on a at surface and
call for help. An assistant can help you to lead you and your AddSeat past
the difcult passage or location. Be especially careful on loose ground or
high obstacles such as an edge.
• Be careful on slopes. Use caution when driving up, down or along one
slope. Do not attempt to drive in slopes if there is loose surface or if it’s slip-
pery. When you drive across a slope, you need to lean towards the top for
balance and make sure you have enough power to cope steer the vehic-
le in the direction of travel. The vehicle would strive to follow the slope of
the ground and will swing downward.

16 Model 5n Doc Ver 5.0 .
AddSeat
• Rocking back and forth is fun but dangerous. If it is a bit slippery, you will
probably fall in the end if you are not careful.
• Watch out in the turns! Always slow down before a turn. Quick turns can
lead to loss of control. Lean into turns.
• Don’t take any unnecessary risks. When you approach a steep slope,
uneven ground or anything that makes you uneasy, do not take the risk!
• Never wear loose clothing on you that can get caught in the wheels and
and prevent you from controlling the AddSeat properly.
• No passengers. Your AddSeat is only designed for one person. Do not carry
other passengers. Don’t carry a child in your lap or in any other way when
you drive!
• Have both hands on the handlebar and both feets resting safetly on the
footrests when you drive your AddSeat.
• Never drive in stairs or revolving doors. Driving in these are dangerous!
• Never drive your AddSeat in the dark or in poor visibility without lamp in the
front and rear. To drive safely you must be able to see what’s in front of you
and others must be able to see you!
• Be relaxed when driving. Keep your head up.
• Be prepared to stop. Be especially careful at crossing intersections, on
driveways, street corners, doorways and other places where you may
need to slow down or stop to avoid motorists, cyclists or pedestrians.
!! WARNING
Risk of head injury due to fall or collision. Helmet should be used at all time
when driving.

17 Model 5n Doc Ver 5.0 .
AddSeat
• Always be alert and as with any vehicle, you must be mentally capable
of driving a vehicle for driving a AddSeat safely. Do not drive if you do not
meet and understand the requirements stipulated in this guide. Do not dri-
ve if you are ill, or under the inuence of alcohol or drugs!
• Do not drive backwards with your AddSeat, you do probably not have
eyes in the back. Optionally, you may cautiously back a few feet to
maneuver but you have to know what’s behind you! Turn instead around
and drive forward. The difference between maneuvering backwards and
driving backwards is like taking a few steps back or walking backwards.
Maneuver backward only when you need to open a door or back away
from an obstacle.
• Do not restart and drive your AddSeat after it has indicated that the bat-
teries are dead or perfomed a automatic shutdown because the batteries
are dead. If you restart and continues to drive, you risk falling. In addition,
you risk damaging the batteries, which means that you reduce the lifetime
and capacity on them.
• It is dangerous to increase over a rock or something protruding xed
objects on the ground. If you get stuck on an object, the vehicle automati-
cally perform a safety shutdown and you can fall.
• In order to transport cargo, use a backpack that you can have on your
back or forward on the stomach. It can also be placed on the seat back
if it is not too heavy! If an emergency occurs, the parking (gyro) handles
has to be free! So thats why the load bars are not suitable for cargo on
your AddSeat. Do not place any load on the platform. The total weight
of the load on the handlebars is max 4.5 kg. If it is exceeded it disturbs the
balance ability. It could lead the AddSeat to accelerate on its own, which
could mean a risk of personal injury or damage to your AddSeat.
!! WARNING
Potential Injuries in case of loss of gyro function do to low or discharged bat-
tery level. Never defy warnings from the AddSeat.

18 Model 5n Doc Ver 5.0 .
AddSeat
• Do not exceed the maximum weight limit (for the driver and cargo), as
specied in the Reference Manual. If you exceed the maximum weight
limits the risk of falls and injures increases. The driver’s weight must not be
less than that specied in the Reference Manual. If you weigh less, it can
happen that you can not drive safely because you can not move the
body weight far enough back (behind the center line between the whe-
els) in order to slow down and stop, especially if you are driving in a down-
hill.
Drivers under the minimum weight limit can also be so light that they do
not activate AddSeats balancing system properly. Minimum weight of the
driver is 45 kg and max weight 120 kg of driver and cargo.
For more information on weight limits, see ”Weight Limits” in the Reference
Manual.
• Since the safe driving of AddSeat means understanding all instructions in
this guide, Segway Inc. recommend that you don’t let children drive your
AddSeat unless:
(a) You have learned to drive, so you understand what it takes to drive
safely. (b) The child has read this entire guide and (c) You are satised that
the child has the knowledge, maturity and physical ability to drive safely
and will not exposing herself or others at risk. Segway recommends that
must be at least 16 years old.
• Make sure tyre pressure is 1,5 - 2kg (bar). If you exceed the tyre pressure,
there is a risk of loss of control, collisions and falls. If you have a lower press-
ure it reduces the range and increases risk of damaging the tyres.
• Make sure your AddSeat is powered off before lifting it. Use good lifting
techniques. Segway recommends that two people lift it together. Both
should have a hand on the Steering rod and lift by the load bars. Lift with
your legs, not with your back. Never lift by the tyres or the fenders becau-
se your ngers can get caught between the tyre and fender. Secure the
machine properly when placed in a vehicle.
• Disconnect the charger cable before removing the batteries or do some
other form of service.
Improper lifting technique can damage your back. Your AddSeat is heavy (80-
90 kg depending on model, tiers and equipment)!
