Premiere’s Built-In DV Support
PriortoWindows98SecondEdition,IEEE1394interfacemanufacturerswererequiredtoprovidetheir
ownclassdriversforuseoftheIEEE1394portsfromwithinWindows.
BeginningwithWindows98SecondEdition,Microsofthasincludeditsownclassdriversthatwill
supportanyOHCI-compliantIEEE1394interface.
IMPORTANT:Premiere’sbuilt-inDVsupportcurrentlyrequires theMicrosoftclassdrivers,andthe
Microsoftclassdriverscannotcoexistwiththird-partyclassdrivers.
Thisdocumentwillhelpyoudetermineifyourcurrentconfigurationiscompatiblewith Premiere’s
built-inDVsupportwithOHCI-compliantIEEE1394(FireWire,ori.LINK)hardware. ThisincludesIEEE
1394add-incardsaswellasIEEE1394portsthatarebuilt-intothecomputer’smotherboard.
Note: IfyoucanalreadycapturevideousingtheincludedDVprojectsettings,thendisregard
thisdocument.

Check for compatibility with Premiere
Set up your camera
1. MakesureyourDVdevice(camcorderordeck)ispluggedintothewallsocket(batterypoweris
notrecommended)andthatit’sproperlyconnectedtothecomputer’sIEEE1394portusingyour
FireWirecable.
2. TurnonyourDVdevice,andsetitto“VTR”mode(insteadof“Camera”mode.)
Check for Imaging Devices inWindows Device Manager
1. FromtheStartmenu,selectSettings>ControlPanel>System;andinSystemProperties,click
ontheDeviceManagertab(Windows98SEandWindowsMe)orclickontheHardwaretabthen
DeviceManagerbutton(Windows2000)
2. Lookforandexpand “Imagingdevices.”
Note: IfthereisnolistingforImagingdevices,see TIclassdrivers sectionbelow.
Microsoft DV class drivers
Ifthedeviceunder“ImagingDevices”is“ MicrosoftDVCameraandVCR”or(underWindowsMe)
“<yourcameramanufacturer>DVCameraandVCR ,” thentheMicrosoftDVclassdrivers(MSDV)are
loadedandPremiereshouldbeabletocapturefromyourDVdevice.
Note: IntherareinstancewhereintheDVdeviceappearsintheDeviceManagerasanImaging
Devicecalled“MicrosoftDVCameraandVCR”butPremiereisstillunabletoconnecttothe

capturedriver:(1)UninstallthenreinstallPremiereandtryagain.Ifitstilldoesnotsucceed,you
mayhavetoreinstallWindows98SecondEdition,thenreinstallPremiere.
Sony class drivers
Ifthedevice listedintheDeviceManagerunderImagingdevicesis“ SonyDVCR ,”thentheSonyclass
drivershaveloaded,preventingMSDVfromcontrollingtheIEEE1394hardware. Inthiscase,only
Sony’sDVGatesoftwarecancapturefromorplaybacktotheFireWiredevice.
IfyouwishtousePremiere’sbuilt-inDVsupportinsteadofSony’sbundledDVsupport,youmust
disabletheSonyclassdriverssothatthoseincludedwithWindowscantakeover. Theeasiestwaytodo
thisistodownloadandruntheSonySwitcherutilityfromthefollowingAdobewebsite:

TI class drivers
If“Imagingdevices”doesnotappearintheDeviceManagerlist,youprobablyhaveaTexasInstruments
(TI)classdriver.Youcancheckthisbyexpanding “Sound,VideoandGameControllers”intheDevice
Manager.If yourDVdeviceappearsas“ 1394DVCamcorder ,” thentheTexasInstrumentsclassdriver
hasbeenloaded,preventingPremierefromaccessingyourIEEE1394hardware. Forinstructionson
