Algas‐SDIInternationalLLC(ASDI)warrantsthattheequipmentisfreefromdefectsin
materialsandworkmanshipundernormaluseandservice.ASDIagreestorepairorreplace,
atitsoption,withoutchargeF.O.B.factory,anypartwhichhasprovendefectivetothe
satisfactionofASDIwithinone(1)yearfromthedateoftheoriginalinstallationorwith18
monthsfromthedateofshipment,whicheverisearlier.Equipment,whichintheopinionof
ASDI,hasbeendamagedinshipmentorbyimproperinstallationoroperation,orhasbeen

Introduction 1
Description/Overview
TheSECONDSUN™lineofflamelesscatalytictankheatersareauniqueproductintheindustrywhichAlgas‐
SDIhasbeendevelopingandtestingforseveralyears.Theconceptisaresultofresearchwhichbeganin1998.
Theintentoftheheateristoaugmentnaturalvaporizationortobuildpressurefromtheenvironmentattimes
whentheenvironmentisnotabletosupplytheneededenergythroughthe“wetted”surfaceareaoftheLPG
tank.Whenusedwithpropane,applicationscanrangefromboostingpressureinatanktovaporizingsmall
loads.Usetheheaterduringcoldweatherinlieuofapumptoboostpressureonatankthatisusedwitha
vaporizerforlargerloads.Theheatercanbothboostpressureandserveasavaporizerforsmallerloadsupto
2.0MMBtu/hr(586kW).Ineithercasethecontainerscanbestationaryorportablesincetheheaterdoesnot
needapermanentelectricalservice.TheSECONDSUN™isbestsuitedfortemporary,non‐permanent
installationsandmaybeusedtoboostthepressureinacontainerthathasbeenoverdrawnandrefrigerated.
Catalyticheaters,properlymaintainedandserviced,willnotigniteamixtureoffuelandairorsustainopen
flamecombustion.Astainless‐steelgrillisinstalledtoprotectthecatalyticmaterialfromdamagesuchas
incidentalimpact.
ModelSelection
TheSS10isratedat10,000Btu/hr(2.9kW)inputandisdesignedfor500–1,000gal(2.0m3‐4m3)tanks.The
SS30isratedat30,000Btu/hr(8.8kW)inputandisdesignedforinstallationon1,000‐12,000gal(4m3–45
m3)tanks.
Safeties
EachSECONDSUN™operatesandiscontrolledbytankpressure.Thesafetycontrolsystemincludesthree(3)
elements:anover‐pressuresafetyswitchthatmonitorsLPGtankpressure,ahigh‐temperatureswitchthat
monitorsthetanksurfacetemperature,andapilotheatermonitorthatshutsdowntheheaterifthecatalytic
reactionceases.Whenanyofthesafetiesaretriggered,manualinterventionisrequiredtorestarttheunit.

HowtheTankHeaterWorks
Asolidstatethermo‐electricgenerator(TEG)providespowertooperatethetankheater.Electricalpoweris
generatedbythetemperaturedifferentialbetweentheheaterandtheambientairtemperature.Thesmall
finnedaluminumheatsinkcoolsonesideoftheTEGandtheheaterprovidesheattotheoppositesideofthe
TEG.Theheatsinkfinsmustremainexposedandunobstructed.TheSECONDSUN™isa“staged”heater
consistingofasmallerportioncalledthe“pilot”andalargersectioncalledthe“mainheater”.Thesetwo
sectionsarebothcontainedwithintheoverallheaterandcannotbeseenwithoutremovingthecatalyst
material.
Thepilotheaterisusedtostartthecatalyzingprocessandtoallowtheheatertoturndownwhenmainheatis
notnecessary.
Atambienttemperaturesof85‐90°F(29‐32°C)withPropanetheheaterwillautomaticallyshutdowndueto
highpressure.Thiswillmostlikelyoccurifthereisnocontinuousdemandforgas.Beforerestartingtheunit,
inthefall,thecatalystmaterialshouldbevisuallyinspectedtomakesurerodentshavenotenteredand
degradedthematerial.Atthesametime,thetanksurfacecoveredbytheheatershouldbeinspectedfor
corrosion,usingthesamemethodusedforinspectingallotherexposedsurfaces.(SeetheMaintenancesection
ofthismanual).
Storage
Whennotneededduringthesummeroroffseason,itisrecommendedthattheunitbeshutoffandremoved
fromtank,inordertopreventtheaccumulationofdustandothercontaminantswhichcouldimpairproper
functionofthetankheater.

InstallinaccordancewithNFPA58andlocalapplicablecodesand
regulationsasrequired.
MountingtheSecondSun
InstalltheSECONDSUNTMona“raised”tanktoallowspacefortheheatertoberotatedtothelowestsection
ofthetank.Avoidmountingoverweldseams,asthiscouldresultinawaterleakpath.Ensurethatthetopedge
cabinetsealissufficientlycompressedtoavoidanymoisturefromenteringbelow.
Inspecttheheaterfacevisuallyforanydamageorgapsinthecatalystmaterialpriortoinstallation.Atthesame
time,thetanksurface,coveredbytheheater,shouldbeinspectedforcorrosion,usingthesamemethodfor
inspectingallotherexposedsurfaces.Cleanallforeignmaterialsfromthepipelinespriortomakingany
connectionstoSECONDSUNTM.Usepipesealant,approvedforLPGuse,whererequired.Checkallconnections
forleaksusingaleakdetectionsolutionordevice.Eliminateallleakspriortooperation.Makesuretoinstall
thetwoJ‐hooksasshowedbelow.IncorrectlyinstalledJ‐hookscanbenddownthetoprainguard.SeeFigure

1. Oncetheuppertemperatureswitchhasopenedandfullcontactismadewithtanksurface,itcan
takeupto15minutesfortheswitchtocooldownandautomaticallyreset.Oncetheswitchhas
closed,thecontrolcircuitwillallowgastothemainheater.SeeFigure9.
2. Thelowertemperatureswitchwillopenwhentheliquidlevelinthetankfallsbelowthe

1. YourTankHeaterincludesapermanentlyattachedheavygaugestarting/jumpercable,which
shouldbeconnectedtothebatteryofarunningvehicleproducingaminimum12VoltDC.The
cableislongenoughtoreachoutsideofthehazardousarea.The12VoltDCwillprovidepowerto
thePreHeatdevice.
2. Amagneticchordwrapisprovidedtostorethepowercablewhentemporarypowerisnolonger
neededoncethetankheathasbeenproperlystarted.SeeFigure10.

STANDBY.Two(2)pressureswitchesdeterminethemodeofoperation.Anadjustablepressureswitch,witha
rangeof30psi–150psi(2–10bar)determinesONandSTANDBYmodes.Whenthepressureinthestorage
tankfallsbelowthepre‐setpressure,theheaterwillcycleonprovidingheat(energy)intotheLPGstoredin
thetank.Whenthepressurerisesabovethepre‐setpressurethetankheaterrevertstostandbymode.There
isaswitchdelayofapproximately5psi(0.3bar)beforeandaftertheswitchset‐point.Whenthetankpressure
reaches160psi(11bar)theheaterwillturnoff,requiringmanualrestart.

hasfour(4)safetyshutdownsasfollows:hightankpressure,lossofcatalyticreaction
(combustionout),hightankwalltemperatureandemptytank.
1. Ifthetankpressurerisesto160psi(11bar)thetankheaterwillshutdowncompletelyrequiringa
manualrestart.
2. Ifthecatalyticreactionceasestheheaterwillshutdowncompletelyrequiringmanualrestart.
3. Ifthefuellevelinthetankfallsbelowthetopoftheheater,theheaterwillreverttostandbymode
untilthetankisrefilled.
4. Ifthefuellevelinthetankfallsbelowthelowersectionedgeoftheheaterandthetankwall
temperaturerisesabove130°F(54°C),theheaterwillshutdowncompletelyrequiringmanualrestart.
StartingtheSecondSun
1. Attachcablestoheavy‐duty12‐voltbattery,servicetruck
orbatterycharger,locatedoutsidethehazardousstorage
area.
2. Startthetrucktokeepthebatterychargedduringthe
heaterstart‐upprocedure.
3. Opentheisolationvalveonthepropane/LPGtankandthe
on‐offvalveontheheater.
4. Checkforgasleaksandrepairthembeforeproceeding.
5. Turntheblackknobonthegasvalveto“Pilot”andwait15minutesbeforedepressingthepilotvalve
knob.Terminals3–5shouldread100mVwhenreadyforpilottostart.
6. Depressandholdthepilotknobforatleast30seconds.Donotattempttolighttheheaterbyhand
withanopenflamedevice,asthisisnotpossibleandcanresultininjuryordeath.

TheSECONDSUNTMisdesignedforlong‐termtrouble‐freeoperation.Becauseofthenatureofitsuse,andthe
lowmaintenancerequirements,itisimportanttoprovidescheduledmaintenance.Belowisacheck‐offlistfor
annualinspections.
1. Releasethemountingcablesand
allowtheheatertotiltback.Thiswillallowadequatespacetoinspect
boththeheatersurfaceandthe
tanksurface.
2. Thetanksurfaceshouldbeclean;inspectforanypaintchips,corrosionorpaintdelamination,and
repairtopreventpotentialcorrosiononthetanksurface.
3. Theheaterfaceshouldbecleanandfreeofdebris,ice,snowandinsectnests.Performavisualinspection
ofthemountinghardware,allcomponents,heatercabinet,catalyticcartridgesanddetermineifthere
isevidenceofanyphysicaldamage,watercontaminationormissingparts.Inspectthefaceofthe
catalyticcartridge(s)foranyholespenetratingthroughthepad,loosefittingframearoundthe
perimeter,andlooseormissinganchors.Ifholesarepresent,discontinueuseimmediatelyandcontact
Algas‐SDIforrepair.Gascanescapefromholesinthecatmaterialandsupportopenflame
combustion.
4. Inspectforcontaminantsonthefaceofthecartridge,suchasdirt,dust,oilsoranyotherdebristhat
mayhavecollectedovertheseason.Donotattempttocleanthecartridgewithchemicals,high
pressureairorwater.Trytoremovecontaminantswithlowpressureair(<20psior<1.4bar),directed
atashallowangletothecatalyticpadsurface.
5. Cleanobstructionsfromthecoverinletandexhaustvents.Iftheexhaustand/orinletventsare
plugged,
theheaterwillnotoperatecorrectlyandmaynotreachoptimumtemperature.
6. Checktheconditionoftheheatsinkontheoutsideofthecabinetandensureitisnotloose,orthat
thecoolingfinsarenotpluggedwithdirtordebris.
7. Takenoteoftheconditionofallseals:sideseal,temperatureswitchbandseal,andtopedgecabinet
seal.Thetopedgecabinetsealshouldbereplacedanytimethetankheaterisremovedorifthereis
evidencethatthesealhasleaked.
8. Checkallelectricalconnectionstoensuretheyaretightandunbroken.Thisincludesthegasvalve,
safetytemperatureswitches,safetypressureswitches,andtheterminalstrip.Cleananycorrosion
fromthecontacts.
9. Disconnectboththemainandpilotstainlessflextubingfromtheheaterbulkheadfittings.Applyhigh

boxtoensureitis11VoltsDCorgreater.
13. VoltageofthePeltierdevice,measuredbetweenterminal3and5,shouldbe90mVor
highertostart
theheaterpilotandwhentheheateriswarmandoperatingthisshould
measure300‐400mV(visittroubleshootinginformationinSection5).
14. ManifoldgaspressureshouldbeaccordingtothetableinFigure8.SeeFigure3forgasportlocation.
15. Thetemperatureoftheheaterfaceshouldbe750–822°F(399–439°C).Iftheheatersurfacedoesnot

temperatureafteranhourofoperation750°F(399°C)andtankpressureislessthan55psi
