areapplied.Failuretoapplyservicebrakesmayresultin
unexpectedvehiclemovement.
•Ifyouleavethevehicleandtheengineisrunning,thevehicle
canmoveunexpectedlyandyouorotherscouldbeinjured.If
youmustleavetheenginerunning,DONOTLEAVEthevehicle
untilyouhavecompletedallofthefollowingprocedures:
•PutthetransmissioninN(Neutral).
•Besuretheengineisatlowidle(500–800rpm).
•Applytheparkingandemergencybrakesandmakesure
theyareproperlyengaged.
•Chockthewheelsandtakeotherstepsnecessarytokeep
thevehiclefrommoving.
•Thevehicleservicebrakes,parkingbrake,oremergencybrake
mustbeappliedwheneverN(Neutral)isselectedtoprevent
unexpectedvehiclemovement.SelectingN(Neutral)doesnot
applythevehiclebrakesunlessanauxiliarysystemtoapply
theparkingbrakeisinstalledbytheOEM.
•Usingtheretarderonwetorslipperyroadsmaycauseloss
oftractiononthedrivewheels—yourvehiclemayslideout
ofcontrol.Tohelpavoidinjuryorpropertydamage,turnthe
retarderenabletoOFFwhendrivingonwetorslipperyroads.

•Toavoidlossofcontrol,useacombinationofdownshifting,
braking,andotherretardingdevices.Downshiftingtoalower
transmissionrangeincreasesenginebrakingandcanhelp
youmaintaincontrol.Thetransmissionhasafeatureto
preventautomaticupshiftingabovethelowerrangeselected.
However,duringdownhilloperation,ifenginegovernedspeed
isexceededinthelowerrange,thetransmissionwillupshift
tothenexthigherrangetopreventenginedamage.Thiswill
reduceenginebrakingandcouldcausealossofcontrol.
Applythevehiclebrakesorotherretardingdevicetoprevent
exceedingenginegovernedspeedinthelowerrangeselected.

•Thisinputfunctioninvolvestheuseofcomplexalgorithmsin
thecontrollogic.Ifthefunctionisenabledinthecalibration
butthecontrolcircuitforthefunctionisnotinstalled,thereis
apotentialriskforoneormoresystemfailuremodeswhich
couldresultinundesirabletransmissionoperation.Therefore,
theactivationcircuitforthisfunctionMUSTBEproperly
integratedinthevehicleinwhichitisinstalled.Ifthefunction
willnotbeusedinthenalvehicle,itMUSTNOTbeorderedin
thecalibration.Forspecicinstallations,thevehiclemaybe
operatedpriortofullintegrationofthefunctionintothevehicle
wiring.Forexample,abarechassistransportedtoabody
builderwherethefunctionwillbewiredintothecompleted
vehicle.Inthesecases,ifthefunctionisactivatedinthe
calibration,thespecicwiresrelatedtothefunctionmustbe
electricallyisolated,completelyandindividually.Untilproperly
integratedintothenalvehiclewiring,thechassisbuildermust
protectthewiressuchthattheydonotmakeelectricalcontact
withthefollowing:
•eachother,ifthefunctioninvolvesmorethanonewire
•anyothertransmissionwiring
•anyothervehiclewires
•anypartofthevehicleorchassis
•Thisschematicshowstheintendeduseofthespecied
controlsfeaturewhichhasbeenvalidatedintheconguration
shown.Anymiswiringoruseofthisfeaturewhichdiffersfrom
thatshowncouldresultindamagetoequipmentorproperty,
personalinjury,orlossoflife.AllisonTransmissionisnotliable
fortheconsequencesassociatedwithmiswiringorunintended
useofthesefeatures.

retardercontrolsduringinclementweatherorslipperyroad

injury,orpropertydamagemayoccur.Operatorshouldbe
preparedtoapplyvehiclebrakesorotherretarderdeviceifthe
transmissionretarderdoesnotapply.
Ifthetransmissionretarderdoesnotfunction,death,serious
injury,orpropertydamagemayoccur.Besuretotestforproper
retarderfunctionperiodically.Ifaretarderispresentbutis
notdetectedby“autodetect,”theretarderwillnotfunction.
Whenevertheretarderdoesnotapply,seekservicehelp
immediately.
•Avoidcontactwiththehotuidorthesumpwhendraining
transmissionuid.Directcontactwiththehotuidorthehot
sumpmayresultinbodilyinjury.
•WithouttheSAEJ1939communicationdatalink,theshift
selectorcannotdisplaytheselectedtransmissionrange.
