Install Batteries (not included)
Note:
nUse four AA Alkaline or Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) batteries.
nReplace all four batteries at the same time. Do not mix different brands
and types of batteries. Do not mix old and new batteries. This may
cause overheating or an explosion.
nIf Flash will not be in use for a long period of time, remove the batteries.
Leaving the batteries in the Flash may result in damage due to leakage.
nDo not use a leaking battery.
1. Open the battery cover
by sliding the cover in the
direction of the arrow labeled
“BATT PUSH”.
2. Insert batteries according
to the polarity label on the
inside of the battery cover.
3. Close the battery cover by
sliding the cover back into
the original closed position.

Note: Make sure the Electronic Flash is turned off before mounting and
unmounting it on a camera.

Operating Instructions
1. Turn the Electronic Flash ON/OFF
Note: If the Electronic Flash will not be used for
an extended time, slide the Power switch to
OFF and remove the four batteries.
– Slide the Power switch to ON. All lights will
flash once. The Electronic Flash will start
charging when the POWER light is green.
– To test flash, press the TEST button.
– To turn off the Electronic Flash, slide the
Power switch to OFF.
2. Light intensity output
The Electronic Flash has eight light intensities. The eight intensities are
shown on the eight vertical bars on the display panel. The light intensity level
being used at any time is indicated on the corresponding lighted vertical bar.
The levels are adjusted by cycling through the +button and –button. Light
intensity levels include: 1/128, 1/64, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, and 1/1 (full
power output).
3. M MODE
On M MODE (manual mode), flash brightness is selected manually. Select the
light intensity and adjust the camera by pressing the shutter. The Electronic
Flash will flash under the camera synchronous signal.
4. S1 MODE
S1 MODE (slave mode) can only be used when the camera or master flash
is on M MODE. On S1 MODE the Electronic Flash will trigger the flash
synchronously with the first flash of the camera or master flash. This mode
cannot be used if the camera is on TTL MODE.

5. S2 MODE
S2 MODE (slave mode 2 or pre-flashing cancel mode) can only be used when
the camera or master flash is on TTL MODE. The camera or master flash will
flash twice: the first flash tests the environmental light and the second flash
captures the image. The Electronic Flash will ignore the first flash and will flash
synchronously with the second flash.

6. Automatic save function
The Electronic Flash will automatically save the current settings.
7. PC synchronous port input
The Electronic Flash synchronous port is used for connecting the flash to
the camera using a coaxial PC cable (not included). When the two pieces
are connected, the Electronic Flash can be positioned away from the
camera and doesn’t need to be mounted on the camera’s hot shoe bracket.
Note: the PC sync flash only accepts synchronous signal input and does
not support synchronous signal output.
8. External power supply box
The Electronic Flash uses a standard Canon external power socket. A
compatible power supply box can be purchased and connected to the
external power source socket port.
9. Power saving function
nThe Electronic Flash has an auto sleep function to save battery power for
longer use. When the Electronic Flash enters auto sleep mode, the indicator
light turns off. The POWER indicator light will flash green for 0.5 second
intervals.
nIn M MODE, the Electronic Flash will idle for five minutes and then will enter
auto sleep mode. To restart the Electronic Flash, press the TEST button or
activate the camera.

10. Hot shoe stand
The hot shoe stand has a 1/4” socket on the bottom for mounting the stand
on a studio light stand or tripod.
9. Power saving function (cont.)
nIn S1 and S2 MODE, the Electronic Flash will idle for 40 minutes and
then will enter auto sleep mode. To restart the Electronic Flash, press
the TEST button or activate the camera.
WARNING: During continuous flash shooting, the batteries may generate
heat and cause injury. Read Safety Instructions carefully before using
Battery protection - When the response time is more than 30 seconds, the
flash will stop charging. If the power indicator light flashes alternating red and
green with 0.5 second intervals, then replace the four batteries.

11. Protection function
To prevent overheating, please note the maximum number of consecutive
flashes. Wait at least 10 minutes for the Electronic Flash to cool down.

Advanced Applications
1. Flash bounce card
The DF500 Electronic Flash includes a Flash bounce card which softens the
light of the flash and reduces the shadows.
2. Wide angle diffuser
The Wide angle diffuser can be used with the Flash bounce card for Macro
photography. This produces a softer light on objects within a closer range.
Troubleshooting
nElectronic Flash power does not turn on
– Check if the batteries are installed correctly. Reinstall the four batteries.
nElectronic Flash will not install on camera correctly
– Make sure the Flash’s hot shoe foot has correct contact with the camera’s
hot shoe bracket. Remount the Flash to verify its mount. The two hot shoe
areas may need to be wiped clean with a dry cloth.
nElectronic Flash will not flash
– Make sure the Flash’s hot shoe foot has correct contact with the camera’s
hot shoe bracket. Remount the Flash to verify it is mounted correctly.
– Check to see that the sensor is clear of dirt. The two hot shoe areas may
need to be wiped clean with a dry cloth.
nWireless sensor does not activate flash
– Make sure the flash MODE button is set to S1 or S2 MODE.
– Check to see that the sensor is clear of dirt.
– Confirm nothing is blocking the wireless sensor. Remount the Flash to verify
it is mounted correctly with clear contact.
– Make sure there is no glare on the wireless sensor.
– Replace four batteries if necessary.

For Your Safety - Before using your product, please read the following safety precautions
carefully and thoroughly to ensure correct and safe use and to help prevent damage to your

2. Do not use the unit in the presence of flammable or explosive gas. If the flash unit is operated
in areas where there is a flammable gas, including propane, gasoline and dust, it could cause an
explosion or fire.
3. Never attempt to disassemble or repair the flash unit.
4. Do not cover the light-emitting area with your hands and do not touch the light-emitting area
after continuous flash. Doing so may burn your skin.
5. Do not fire the flash unit directly at the driver of a moving car, as this could temporarily impair
the driver’s vision and cause an accident.
6. Do not fire the flash unit directly into the eyes of a person at close range, as it could damage
the retinas. Never fire the flash unit closer than 3 feet (1m) from infants.
7. Close supervision is necessary when the product is used by or near children.
8. If you detect heat, smoke or notice a burning smell, immediately stop operation and remove
the batteries to prevent the unit from catching on fire or melting. Allow the flash unit to cool
down so it can be safely touched and the batteries can be removed. Bring the unit to the nearest
authorized service facility for repair.
9. If the flash unit is dropped and damaged, do not operate the product or touch any exposed
interior metal parts. Take it to the nearest authorized service facility for examination or repair.
10. To protect against electrical shock do not touch the flash unit with damp or wet hands. Do not
clean the product with a damp or wet cloth.
11. To protect against electrical shock, do not immerse the flash unit in liquid or exposed to rain,
saltwater or moisture.
12. Use only the batteries specified in this Instruction Manual.
13. Do not mix battery types, brands or old and new batteries The batteries could leak corrosive
liquids, explode or catch on fire.
14. Remove any batteries from the unit before storing the unit for a long time to prevent the unit
from catching on fire or leaking corrosive liquids.
15. Do not use the product for other than the intended use.
16. Save these instructions.
Cleaning and Maintenance
1. Clean the flash panel on a regular basis. Dust on the panel while flashing is occurring may
cause it to break.
2. Use a soft cloth to remove dust. If the flash is used near a beach or seaside area, use distilled
water on a soft cloth to remove sand and salt. Then gently wipe it with a cloth until flash is
completely dry.
3. Do not use thinner, benzene and other organic solvents to clean the flash. This may cause
damage to the flash or cause a fire.
