Notes On Export Management
This product and its manuals may require an Export License/Approval by
the Government of the product's country of origin for re-export from you
r
country.
Before re-exporting the product or manuals, please contact us to confirm
whether they are export-controlled items or not.

iv
Part Names & Part Numbers
Please specify the part numbers shown in the parts list when making inquiries or
when ordering parts. There may be a difference between the names of parts used in
this manual and the parts actually used in the equipment or supplied for repair. This
is because equivalent part parts with the same functions, performance and reliability
as the parts specified in the circuit diagrams and parts list have been used or supplied.
Since the parts are equivalent, they have absolutely no adverse effect on the equip-
ment specified functions, performance or reliability.

v
Power Line Fuse Protection
For safety, Anritsu products have either one or two fuses in the AC power lines as
requested by the customer when ordering.
Single fuse: A fuse is inserted in one of the AC power lines.
Double fuse: A fuse is inserted in each of the AC power lines.
Example: An example of the double fuse is shown below:

Section 1 General
1-1
This is the service manual of the MP1764C Error Detector for smooth maintenance
and service work of the service personnel, and does not supplied to customers. Only
used for service personnel.
Our basic policy to the repair is return to the factory system, i.e. the defective instru-
ment should be returned to Anritsu for repair.
However, it may be time consuming and some kinds of repairs can be easily done in
the field.
Therefore, Anritsu allows only those whom Anritsu has authorized to open the in-
strument and repair it.
As clearly stated in the WARRANTY statement, any unauthorized modification, re-
pair, or attempt to repair will render the warranty void.
This service manual is composed of SECTION 1 to SECTION 7, and APPENDIX A
whose details are summerized below:
SECTION 2 OUTLINE OF OPERATION
This section describes the outline of operation.
SECTION 3 TROUBLESHOOTING
This section describes how to find the faulty portion.
SECTION 4 WAVEFORM AT CHECK POINT
This section shows the typical waveform at each check point.
SECTION 5 NOTE ON PARTS REPLACEMENT
This section describes caution and operation confirmation at and af-
ter replacing parts.
SECTION 6 MECHANICAL CONFIGURATION
This section describes how to disassemble the MP1764C.
SECTION 7 ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
This section describes how to adjust the MP1764C.
APPENDIX A CIRCUIT DIAGRAM
This section provides the circuit diagrams of the MP1764C.
For the composition, specifications, operating instructions, performance checks and a
detailed description of the panel controls; refer to the separate operation manual.

Section 2 Outline of Operation
2-2.
2.2 Principles of Operation
Data stream of the MP1764C is consists of DATA INPUT (E5 DATA INPUT, A24
DATA INPUT BIAS), DFF 1, 2 (E6 DFF 1, A25 DFF 1 BIAS, E7 DFF 2, A26 DFF 2
BIAS), DEMUX (H) (A22), DEMUX (L) (A08), PGED 1, 2 (A10 PGED 1, A12
PGED 2), SYNC (A11).
Clock stream of the MP1764C is consists of VARIABLE DEALY with DC MOTOR
(E3), CLOCK INPUT (E4, A23), COAXIAL SWITCH (S2), FREQUENCY DI-
VIDER (A21) and DEMUX (L) (A22).
The MP1764C measures the input DATA error rate with the input CLOCK rate by
inputting DATA (NRZ) and CLOCK. The DATA input to the MP1764C is demulti-
plexed to 128 signals with 1/128 data rate.
These signals are synchronized with 128 reference signals with the same data rate
and compared with the reference signals bit-by-bit. The DFF 1, 2, DEMUX (H),
DEMUX (L) and PGED 1, 2 sections demultiplex the input DATA to 128 signals
with 1/128 data rate. PGED 1, 2 generates 128 reference signals with 1/128 data
rate.
The CLOCK for demultiplexing is made by shaping and frequency-dividing the input
CLOCK signal at CLOCK INPUT and FREQUENCY DIVIDER. The sections that
compare the input signal and the reference signal bit-by-bit are PGED 1 and 2.
Counters in PGED 1 and 2 count the number of errors detected.
SYNC synchronizes the input signal to the reference signal.
All the above-mentioned hardware is controlled by CPU (A05), I/O (A04), GPIB 1
(A17), GPIB 2 (A18) and DISPLAY (A02).

Section 3 Troubleshooting
3-1
3.1 Introduction
This section describes how to troubleshoot the MP1764C Error Detector when ab-
nomalities occur during measurement or performance checks.
3.2 Repair Policy
Repair of the MP1764C is just to replace the faulty package (PC board on which
parts mounted), unit, or hybrid IC (HIC), after checking the waveforms at check
points.
The waveforms are shown in SECTION 4.
Adjustment is required for some packages, units, and HICs after repair.
See also SECTION 5 for the confirmation after repair.
The disassembling the MP1764C is shown in SECTION 6.

3.4 Countermeasure against Static Electricity
To prevent damage caused by static electricity, always put a conductive mat on the
servicing bench. In addition, the service personnel should wear a wrist strap as
shown in Fig. 3-2.
