1. Introducing
Thisdocument describes theprocess of installing the Armatix iS1 device forthe
MicrosoftWindowsXP operating system.

2. Installing drivers
To install the Armatix iS1deviceunder WindowsXP, followthe instructions
below:
•Use the iS1 driver CD or downloadthelatest drivers from the Armatix website
and unzip them to a location onyour PC.
•If you are runningWindowsXP or WindowsXP SP 1, temporarilydisconnect
your PC fromtheInternet.This canbe done byeither removing the network
cablefrom yourPCor bydisablingyour network card bygoingto the"Control
Panel\Network and Dial-Up Connections", right-clickingon theappropriate
connection and selecting "Disable" from the menu.The connection can bere-
enabledafter the installation is complete. Thisis not necessaryunder
WindowsXP SP 2 if configured to ask beforeconnecting to Windows Update.
WindowsXP SP 2 can have the settings for Windows Update changed
through"Control Panel\System" then selectthe "Hardware" tab andclick
"WindowsUpdate".
•Connect thedevice to a spare USB port on your PC. Once thecomposite
driver hasbeeninstalled Windows Found NewHardware Wizard will launch. If
there is no availableInternet connection or WindowsXP SP 2 is configured to
ask before connectingto WindowsUpdate,the screen shown in Figure 2.1 is
displayed.Select "No, not this time" fromtheoptionsavailable andthen click
"Next" toproceed with the installation. If there is anavailable internet
connection, WindowsXP willsilentlyconnect to the Windows Updatewebsite
and install anysuitable driveritfindsfor the device inpreference to thedriver
manuallyselected.

•Select "Install from a listor specific location (Advanced)" asshownin Figure
2.2belowandthen click "Next".

•Select "Search forthebest driver inthese locations" and enter the filepath in
thecombo-box ("C:\CDM2.02.04" in Figure 2.3 below)or browse to it by
clicking the browse button. Once the file pathhas been entered in thebox,
click next toproceed.

•If WindowsXP is configured towarn when unsigned (non-WHQL certified)
drivers areaboutto be installed, themessage dialogue shown in Figure 2.4
willbe displayed unless installing a Microsoft WHQL certifieddriver. Click on
"ContinueAnyway" to continue withtheinstallation.IfWindows XP is
configured to ignore filesignature warnings,nomessagewillappear.

•Thescreen shown inFigure 2.5 will bedisplayedas WindowsXP copies the
required driver files.

•Windowsshould then displayamessageindicatingthatthe installation was
successful (Figure 2.6). Click "Finish" to complete the installation forthefirst
port ofthe device.

•TheFound NewHardware Wizard will launch automaticallytoinstalltheCOM
port emulation drivers. As above, select"No, not this time" From the options
and click "Next" toproceed with the installation (Figure 2.7).

•Open the DeviceManager (located in"ControlPanel\System" then selectthe
"Hardware" taband click "DeviceManger") andselect "View> Devices by
Connection",thedeviceappears as a "USB Serial Converter" with an
additional COMport with the label "USB SerialPort" (Figure 2.13).

3. Uninstalling drivers
Devicescan be removed using the Device Managerbysimplyright-clicking
on the device andselecting"Uninstall". Thiswilldeletetheassociated registry
entries for that deviceonly.
Under WindowsXP, driverfiles andOEMINFand PNF files must be removed
manuallyor byusing a custom application.OEMINF andPNF files are located in
the Windows\Infdirectoryand canbe identifiedbysearching for a VID and PID
string matching the device installede.g.VID_0403&PID_6001. Once the
matchingOEMINF files are found(e.g. oem10.inffor FTDIBUS.INF and
oem11.inf for FTDIPORT.INF), the correspondingPNF filesmustalso be
removed(e.g.oem10.pnfand oem11.pnf). Driver filesare located inthe
Windows\System32and Windows\System32\Drivers directories.

4. Troubleshooting
4.1. WindowsXPForces A Reboot After Installing a Device
Thisproblem can occur ifanapplication is accessing a filewhile the New
Hardware Wizardistrying tocopyit.This usuallyoccurs with the FTD2XX.DLL
file. Selecting not torestartthe computer then unpluggingand re-plugging the
devicemayallowthedevice tofunction properlywithoutrestarting. Restarting the
machine will allowthe device to work correctly.
4.2. Driver Installation FailsAnd Windows XP GivesError
Code 10
Windowserror code10 indicates a hardware error or failed driver installation. This
error mayappear ifa device has insufficientpower to operate correctly(e.g.
pluggedinto a bus poweredhubwith other devices), or mayindicateamore
serioushardware problem.Also,it maybe indicative ofUSB root hub drivers
being incorrectlyinstalled.
4.3. WindowsXPDisplays An Error AndThen Terminates
Installation
If thefollowingscreen is displayed withthismessage,Windows XP has been
configured to block the installationofanydrivers that are notWHQLcertified.

Twooptionsare available to successfullyinstall the device. Either a certified
versionofthe driver can beinstalled (ifavailable) or the driver signing options can
be changedto either warnorignore toallowthe installation tocomplete.
To changethecurrent driversigning setting, goto "ControlPanel\System", click
on the "Hardware" tabandthen click "Driver Signing". Thedesired signingoption
maythenbe selected.
