By the end f the 1970s, R land established itself as a maj r manufacturer, and in 1981 Mr. Ikutar
Kakehashi pened f ur new c mpanies in three m nths. R land UK, R land GmbH and Musitr nic
AG in Switzerland. He als established a new Japanese divisi n called AMDEK (Anal gue Music Digital
Electr nics Kits)
Back t the early 80’s, the Pr phet 5 and Oberheim OB series d minated the p lyph nic synthesizer
market. Having that in mind the Jupiter-8’s success, initiated in 1981, t k every ne by st rm.
But what made the Jupiter-8 s successful? Well, in terms f s nic p ssibilities, it c mplemented its
c mpetiti n by bringing s mething different. The Jupiter-8 was capable f creating very versatile
s unds. Y u c uld easily make 'fat' r ‘Crystal’ s unds with it. In fact, the Jupiter-8 s unded the
way it l ked, ‘sleek and p lished’. Offering scillat r sync, cr ss m dulati n, a switchable
12dB/24dB filter and p lyph nic p rtament , the s und design pp rtunities were endless. Y u
c uld easily save and l ad patches via its cassette interface. Even a superb arpeggiat r was
included. And last but n t least, the Jupiter 8 was m re reliable than its c mpetiti n, and the s und
was m re c nsistent fr m m del t m del. Theref re it was very attractive f r stage and studi use.
In 1982, R land released an upgraded Jupiter-8, the JP8A, It upgraded the Jupiter-8 with a number
f enhancements. An impr ved DAC with a higher res luti n f the aut -tuning system fr m 12- t
14-bit, plus a brighter LED screen. The Jupiter-8 has bec me ne f the m st revered f all
synthesizers.
The electr -p p c mmunity became quickly c nvinced by the qualities f the Jupiter-8. 'Relax', by
Frankie G es t H llyw d was pr duced inc rp rating a Jupiter 8, and players such Vince Clarke,
J hn F xx, and Martyn Ware were als using it. The path t classic status f the Jupiter started
there.

In the early 80’s R land and Sequential Circuits c mbined f rces t create the MIDI pr t c l. The
techn l gy was derived fr m R land’s earlier DCB bus F rmat. MIDI is still being used t day with
great success. In 1982, R land lauched the Jupiter-6, the first synthesizer inclueding the MIDI
pr t c l n b ard. This new synthesizer was intr duced as an enhancement f the Jupiter-8.
In 1982 R land als released the TB303 Bass line. Initially marketed as a 'c mputerised bass
machine', the little silver b x and its c mpani n, the TR606 'Drumatix', were intended f r use as
replacements f r a bass guitarist and a drummer. The TB303 had a very characteristic filter, and a
built-in sequencer.
