Safety instructions
Important information for safer grinding
Make sure you are familiar with the operating instructions before you use the
grinder.
All local safety regulations with respect to installation, operation and overhaul
must always be followed.
Avoid accidents
To avoid serious personal injury from disintegrating wheel due to
overspeed, defective wheel or improper mounting:
• Check spindle speed regularly with a tachometer.
Note – Never measure spindle speed with an abrasive wheel attached
• Free speed shall not exceed the rated speed marked on the power tool.
• Speed test intervals shall be determined depending on the working environ-
ment and the compressed air quality. Use shorter intervals (once a week)
when conditions are unfavourable, dirty air, corrosive atmosphere, longer
standstills and unregular lubrication. It is acceptable to use longer intervals
when conditions are favourable.
• Particularly check that the actual spindle speed does not exceed the rated
name plate speed before mounting a wheel, after all repairs and whenever
the tool is issued for use.
• Use only abrasive wheels that are in good condition and rated at or above
actual spindle speed.

• Before mounting inspect the wheel. Cracked or chipped wheels must not be
used. Do not use a wheel that has been soaked in water or any other liquid.
The wheel shall fit freely but not loosely on the spindle.
• Check for excessive air pressure (max. working pressure 7 bar – 100 psi) or
mal functioning governor, see ANSI B 186.1 section 3 (3.2.12 speed check).
• Always use the wheel safety guard furnished with the grinder. See ANSI
B186.1 Safety Standard section 3 (3.2.8 Safety Guard).
• Inspect the guard. Damaged, bent or severely worn guards shall be replaced.
A guard subjected to wheel failure is likely to be internally weakened and
shall not be used.
• Check driving flange and the adaptor driving flange. Use only equipment in
accordance with ANSI B186.1 section 3.2.4.3. (3).
• When starting the tool with a new or different grinding wheel hold tool and
run for 30 seconds under a bench or in a manner which will avoid the path
of broken wheel parts in case the wheel is defective.
• Do not modify the grinder in any way.
• Do not mount any adaptor not listed in parts book.
To avoid injury from rotating wheel:
• Disconnect tool from air supply when changing wheel.
• The spindle nut shall be properly tightened to avoid the wheel coming loose.
• Keep the wheel guard mounted and positioned in a way to protect the opera-
tor.
• Always wear personal protective equipment suitable for the job as protec-
tion gloves, leather apron and helmet.
Broken grinding wheel
If grinding wheel is broken, a careful investigation shall be made by the user to
determine and correct the cause.
If the failure occurs while the tools is in operation, the wheel manufacturer and
the tool manufacturer should be notified promptly.
To prevent vision loss:
• Always wear approved eye protection, see ANSI 287.1.
• Isolate work by using barriers between work stations.

Explosive atmosphere must not be ignited:
• To prevent injury and property loss from fire use other non sparking
process.
Long term risks
To prevent gradual loss of hearing due to exposure to high noise
levels:
• wear ear protection
Vibration may be harmful to hands and arms:
• Poorly balanced wheels shall not be used.
• Use vibration dampened handles if available.
• Reduce total time of exposure to vibration.
Avoid inhaling dust:
• Use a dust extraction system.
• Use an approved dust mask.
Proper use
• Work piece shall be properly supported or fixed.
• When cutting off, support workpiece not to jam the wheel. Slot shall remain
constant or become wider during operation.
• If jamming the wheel during cutting off, shut off power and ease the wheel
free, check wheel for damage before continuing operation.
• Remember that there is a running on after the throttle has been released.

• If a grinder fitted with an abrasive wheel is dropped, the wheel must be thor-
oughly examined before reuse.
• Disconnect from power supply before changing wheel or servicing.
• Release control device in case of interruption of energy supply.
• Always keep the tool in a dry and clean place when not in use.
Maintenance
Follow up tool manual and lubrication instruction.
Make overhaul at regular intervals.
Make sure that service personnel are trained.
Take special care concerning dismantling and assembly of speed governors and
overspeed shut off devices.
Always check the free speed after service.
Use genuine Atlas Copco replacement kits and parts only.

Warning
Make sure you are familiar with the operating instructions before you use this
machine.
This machine, its attachments and accessories must only be used for the pur-
pose for which they were designed.
For product liability and safety reasons any modification to the machine, its at-
tachments or accessories must be agreed in advance with an authorized techni-
cal representative of the manufacturer.
To prevent personal injury and long time risks:
• Before making any adjustments to the machine, e.g. changing an accessory,
please ensure that the air supply is disconnected and the machine is safely
isolated.
• Inspect the wheel guard and its locking device before attaching the grinding
equipment.
Always make sure that you have the correct guard for the grinding equip-
ment and adjust the guard for best operator protection.
• The grinding equipment must be approved for the rated speed of the ma-
chine.
• Always use the smaller flange washer for attachment of wheel types 27 or
42 and the larger flange washer for attachment of straight cut-off wheels of
type 41.

• Check the free speed of the machine daily and whenever the machine has
been serviced. This check should be carried out with the grinding equipment
detached.
NOTE - Before checking the speed the backing flange is to be locked with
the flange washer.
Installation
Installation
• Fit the support handle in suitable position for right- or left hand operation
respectively.
• Always make sure that you have the correct guard for the grinding equip-
ment and adjust the guard for best operator protection.
• Attach the grinding equipment according to figure.
• Connect the machine to the air line according to figure.
Blow out the hose before connecting.
The machine is designed for a working pressure (e) of 90 psig.
The motor requires no additional lubrication during operation.
• The throttle valve lever may only be activated after pushing the lever catch
release arm forwards.
Before starting the machine, read the separate safety instruction for grind-
ing.
Check regularly that the catch and the release arm moves easily.
Air quality
• For optimum performance and maximum machine life we recommend the
use of compressed air with a maximum dew point of +10°C. We also rec-
ommend the installation of an Atlas Copco refrigeration-type air dryer.
• Use a separate air filter of type Atlas Copco FIL. This filter removes solid
particles larger than 15 microns and also removes more than 90 % of liquid
water. The filter must be installed as close as possible to the machine/equip-
ment and prior to any other air preparation unit such as REG or DIM (please
see Air Line Accessories in our main catalogue). Blow out the hose before
connecting.
Models which need air lubrication:
• The compressed air must contain a small quantity of oil.
We strongly recommend that you install an Atlas Copco oil-fog lubricator
(DIM). This should be set according to air consumption by the air line tool
according to the following formula:
L = Air consumption (litre/s).
(May be found in our sales literature).
D = Number of drops per min (1 drop = 15 mm3)

this applies to the use of long work cycle air line tools. A single point lubri-
cator type Atlas Copco Dosol can also be used for tools with short running
cycles.
Information about Dosol settings may be found under Air Line Accessories
in our main catalogue.
Lubrication-free models:
• In the case of lubrication-free tools it is up to the customer to decide on the
peripheral equipment to be used. However, it is no disadvantage if the com-
pressed air contains a small quantity of oil e.g. supplied from a fog lubrica-
tor (DIM) or Dosol system. This does not apply to turbine tools, which
should be kept oil free.
Compressed air connection
• The machine is designed for a working pressure (e) of 6–7 bar = 600–700
kPa = 87–102 psi.
• Blow out the hose before connecting.
• Recommended hose size is 16mm (5/8") .

Maintenance
Service interval overview
The table below shows the recommended service interval for light and heavy
duty operation.
The service must only be carried out by an authorized workshop or qualified
service technician.

Checking and cleaning the wheel guard connection
Run the machine at free speed simultaneously pushing the locking arm up-
wards. Check that the wheel guard is properly clamped by the air pressure
(heavy force needed for turning). If air is leaking at the wheel guard, vibrations
may be increased – replace O-rings when necessary.
When it is required to clean at or under the locking arm, dismantle backing
flange and wheel guard according to figure.
Oil changing
For best service life the oil should be changed four times a year at heavy duty
applications and twice a year at light duty operation.

Lubricate the gear with Mereta32 oil, available to order as service kit from At-
las Copco, or with similar oil of good quality.
To avoid overfilling, which can result in a rise of temperature and cause dam-
age to the seal, no topping up of oil is recommended. The oil should be drained
and changed by refilling 20 ml of new oil. Hold the machine vertically with the
throttle handle pointing upwards while doing this. The proper amount of oil is
indicated when the oil is pouring out at the oil filling holes. Clean and refit both
oil plugs.
Do not use compressed air for cleaning when changing the oil - the gear
case must not be put under pressure.
The ball bearings are permanently lubricated or running in oil bath.
Overhaul
Once a year at light duty operation and twice a year at heavy duty operation the
machine should be dismantled for cleaning.
Clean the strainers, the motor casing cover draining slots, and the wheel guard
locking arm and its connection.
Replace bearings and sealings after 2–4 years at light duty operation and 1–2
years of heavy duty operation.
Be particularly careful with the speed governor and the overspeed shut-off
device. Careless treatment may prevent them from functioning correctly. If
the machine stops or does not reach rated speed when air is connected, the
overspeed shut-off device may have closed the inlet air. The machine must
be dismantled and checked before re-setting the overspeed shut-off device.
This service must only be carried out by authorized workshop or quali-
fied service technician.
Make sure that the governor and strainer are properly reassembled to
avoid malfunction.
Free speed check
Check free speed daily with a tachometer. Always check the free speed of
the machine after service.
This check should be carried out with the grinding equipment detached.
Free speed must not exceed the rated speed marked on the tool.
