Yourtransceiverwillachieveitsmaximumoperatingrangewhen
communicating with other transceivers in a flat open area with
notreesorbuildingsobstructing its signal. Range maybeupto
two miles under such conditions. Obstacles such as buildings,
trees or mountains will tend to reduce the transceiver’s effective
range.
Your FR-500 Family Radio is a portable, easy to use, two-way
radiothatyoucancarryalmostanywhere. Itisskillfullyconstructed
to give you reliable communications for many different ap-
plications. The FR-500 is ideal for use around the house, in
yourboat, on hunting and camping trips, on the ski slopes orat
themall.

SAFETY INFORMATION
Your wireless handheld portable transceiver contains a low
powertransmitter. When the PTTbuttonispusheditsendsout
radiofrequency (RF)signals. Thedeviceisauthorizedtooperate

guidelines hold the transmitter at least 1 inch (2.5
centimeters) from your face and speak in a normal
voice, with the antenna pointed up and away. If you
wearthe handsetonyourbodywhileusingtheheadset
accessory, useonlytheAudiovoxsuppliedbelt clip for
this product and ensure that the antenna is at least 1
inch(2.5centimeters)fromyourbodywhentransmitting.
Useonlythesuppliedantenna.Unauthorizedantennas,
modifications, or attachments could damage the
transmitter and may violate FCC regulations.
Normal Position: Hold the transmitter approximately 1” from
yourfaceand speakinanormalvoice, withtheantennapointed
up and away.

1. Power Button (PWR): Press and hold this button for 2 seconds
to turn the transceiver on or off.
2. Push-to-Talk Button (PTT): Press to transmit. Release to
receive.
3. Monitor Button (M): Press and hold to bypass the squelch and
listen to channel activity.

or flashes when the battery level is low.
12. Channel Select Switch (CH A/CH B/CH C): Selects channel
of operation (A=FRS1) (B=FRS8) (C=FRS14).
13. Antenna: Rotate counterclockwisewhen transceiveris inuse.
14. Microphone / Charger Jack (MIC/CHG): For use with an
external microphone/ PTTbutton andoptionalbattery charger.
15. Speaker Jack (SP): For use with an Audiovox approved
headset accessory only.

BATTERY INSTALLATION
YourFR-500requiresthree“AAA”alkalinecells
or three rechargeable “AAA” cells. Alka-
line batterieswill provide thebest perfor-
mance from your transceiver. Remove
the battery compartment (5) cover by
rotating the belt clip (4) up away from
the batterycompartment. Slide the com-
partment cover downward while apply-
ing pressure at its grooved section. Ob-
servethepolaritysymbolsinsidethebat-
tery tray when installing the batteries.
Wheneveroneormorebatteriesareremoved
andreplaced,theunitturnson automatically
as signaled by the sound of four ascending
tones.
CAUTION:
nIncorrect battery installation can damage the unit.
nThe microphone / charger jack is intended for use with
Audiovox approved charging accessories only. Refer to the
documentationincluded with the battery charger.
nNever attempt to charge alkaline batteries with the optional
battery charger.

USING YOUR FR-500
Turning the Transceiver on
Pressing the PWR button (8) for 2 seconds will activate the unit.
Thespeakerwillplayfourascendingbeeptones.Toturntheunitoff,
simplypressand holdthepowerbutton for at least 2 seconds. The
unit will shutdown as evidenced by a single beep tone.
Volume Level Control
Tocontrolaudioreceptionvolumelevel,press theUp(▲)button
to increase volume and press Down (▼) button to decrease
volume.TheFR-500 willconfirmeachpressoftheup(9)ordown
(10) button with a beep tone. A unique tone of two beeps will
indicatethatthelimitofvolumeadjustmenthasbeenreached.

Low Battery Alert
Whenthebatteriesareinneedofreplacement
or charging, the TX/BATT. LED indicator will
flash once every ½ second.
To Select a Channel
As shown at right, move the channel select
switch (12) upward for CH A (FRS Channel
1),middleposition forCHB(FRS Channel8)
or downward for CH C (FRS Channel 14).

To Transmit
1. Set the desired channel.
2. Press and hold the PTT (Push-to-Talk) button (2) while
speakingslowlyandclearlyin anormalvoice,approximately
2 to 3 inches from the microphone.
3. The TX/BATT. indicator (11) will illuminate whiletransmitting.
4. ReleasethePTT(Push-to-Talk)buttonwhenyoufinishspeak-
ingtoreceiveincomingsignals. Atone or “Roger Beep” will
occur to indicate end of transmission.
To Receive.
1. Set the desired channel.
2. Adjustthe volumecontroltothe desiredlisteningvolumeby
usingtheup( )anddown( )buttons while listening to the
buttonconformationtones
3. The transceiver will play strong signals through its internal
speaker or through a headset if so equipped.
Monitor Function
The M button (3) can be used to play all signals present on a
channel. Thisisusefulwhencommunicatingwithotherparties
at extreme range.
The monitor function can be locked on by pressing this button
for 3 seconds. Pressing the monitor button a second time will
unlockthemonitorfunction.

Microphone/Charger Accessory Connection
TheMIC/CHGJack(14)allowsfortheconnectionofanAudiovox
approvedbatterycharger,oranexternalmicrophonewithremote
PTTbutton.
Speaker Accessory Connection
The SP. jack (15) allows for connection of an external Audiovox
approved headset. When in use, the normal speaker is
disabled. Insert only Audiovox approved accessories in the
SP. jack (15) and the MIC/CHG jack (14).

Votre émetteur-récepteurobtient lemaximum decouverture lorsque
vous communiquez avec d'autres émetteurs-récepteurs sur terrain
plat, sans arbres ni bâtiments pour bloquer le signal. Dans de telles

MISE EN PLACE DES PILES
VotreFR-500estalimentépartrois pilesalcalines
« AAA » ou par trois batteries rechargeables
« AAA ». Les piles alcalines vous permettront
d'obtenirlesmeilleuresperformancesdevotre
émetteur-récepteur. Retirez le couvercle du
compartiment des piles (5) en faisant pivoter
lapincedeceinture(4)defaçonàécartercelle-
ciducompartimentdes piles.Faitescoulisser
le couvercle vers le bas tout en appuyant sur
la partie striée. Respectez les symboles de
polaritéfigurantàl'intérieurdulogementdespiles
en installant ces dernières. Chaque fois que l'on
enlève ou que l'on change une ou plusieurs des
piles,l'appareils'allumeautomatiquementetémet
quatretonalitésascendantes.
MISE EN GARDE :
nUnemauvaise installationdes pilesest susceptible
d'endommagerl'appareil.
nLa prise micro/chargeur est destinée au branchement
d'accessoires de charge agréés par Audiovox uniquement. Se
reporter à la documentation du chargeur de batteries.
nNe jamais tenter de recharger des piles alcalines au moyen du
chargeur de batteries en option.

UTILISATION DE VOTRE FR-500
Allumer l'émetteur-récepteur
Unepression de2secondes surla touchePWR(8) metl'appareil sous
tension.Lehaut-parleurémetquatretonalitésascendantes.Pouréteindre
l'appareil,ilvoussuffitdepresserlatouchedemarche/arrêtpendantun
minimum de 2 secondes. L'appareil s'éteindra et émettra une tonalité
d'avertissementunique.
Réglage du volume
Pour régler le volume de réception audio, pressez la touche vers le
haut (▲) pour augmenter le volume et la touche vers le bas (▼)pour
le diminuer. Le FR-500 confirmera chaque pression sur la touche
vers le haut (9) ou vers le bas (10) par une tonalité d'avertissement.
Unetonalitéd'avertissementspécialeconstituéededeuxbips sonores
vous indiquera que vous avez atteint la limite de réglage du volume.

Lorsque les piles ont besoin d'être changées ou
lorsquelesbatteriessontencharge,levoyantDEL
TX/BATT. clignote toutes les ½ seconde.
Pour sélectionner un canal
Commeillustré àdroite, déplacezle sélecteurde
canaux (12) vers le haut pour CH A (canal
FRS 1), vers le centre pour CH B (canal FRS 8)
ou vers le bas pour CH C (canal FRS 14).

Pour émettre
1. Effectuezleréglagedu canalsouhaité.
2. PressezlatouchePTT(poussoird'émission)(2)enparlantlentement
et clairement d'une voix normale, à une distance d'environ 5 à 7, 5
cm (2 à 3 pouces) du micro.
3. LevoyantTX/BATT.(11)s'allumedurantl'émission.
4. Relâchez la touche PTT (poussoir d'émission) lorsque vous avez
terminédeparlerafin derecevoirlessignauxentrants. Unetonalité
ou « Bip sonore de message reçu » retentit pour indiquer la fin de
l'émission.

1. Effectuezleréglageducanalsouhaité.
2. Réglezlevolumed'écouteauniveauvouluau moyendestouches
versle haut ( )et versle bas( ) touten écoutantles tonalités
deconfirmation destouches.
3. L'émétteur-récepteurémettradessignauxpuissantsàtraversson
haut-parleurinterneou àtraversle casqued'écoutemainslibres,
s'il en est équipé.
Fonction Contrôle
La touche M (3) permet d'écouter tous les signaux présents sur un
canal. Cela s'avère utile lorsque vous communiquez avec des
personnesse trouvant enlimite decouverture.
Il est possible de verrouiller la fonction Contrôle en pressant cette
touchependant 3 secondes.Une secondepression surla touchede
contrôledéverrouille lafonction Contrôle.
