Avaya P333T-PWR – Recommended Power Supply Redundancy Scheme
This document describes the recommended power supply redundancy scheme for
the Avaya™ P333T-PWR Power over Ethernet stackable switch.
Powering the P333T-PWR
The P333T-PWR has two internal power supplies: one for the switching circuitry
and one for supplying the Inline power. Connecting the P333T-PWR to the main
electrical supply using the standard AC cable provides power to both internal
power supplies. When only the AC cable is connected, the maximum Inline power
which can be supplied on the Ethernet ports is limited to 200W per P333T-PWR
switch.
You can use the additional external DC power supply input, located in the center of
the rear panel to provide extra Inline power (more than 200w) or to backup the
internal Inline power supply.
You can use the BUPS input, located on the rear panel of P333T-PWR to backup the
switching circuitry internal power supply, by connecting it to Avaya P330 BUPS.
Warning: To unpower the switch completely, you must disconnect all power
sources (AC, BUPS and external DC Inline power).
Connecting an Additional/Backup Inline Power Supply Source
The specification for the external DC power supply for Inline Power is as follows (as
specified in IEEE 802.3af standard):
• Input voltage: 44 to 57 VDC
• Input current: 15 A
• Isolation: 1500V RMS with respect to protective ground

Table 1 below shows the configuration options available when using an external DC
power supply.
Note: Avaya recommends that you avoid setting the output voltage of the external
power supply in the range of 48 to 50 VDC

• The terminals are marked “+” and “-“.
• The size of the two screws in the terminal block is M4; the pitch between each
screw is 9.5mm.

Warning: Make sure that you connect the cables between the P333T-PWR and the
external power supply correctly:
• Positive (“+”) to positive (“+”)
• Negative (“-”) to negative (“-”)
Warning: Make sure that you use cable conductors that have the ampacity of not less
than 125 percent of the total conducted load.
Recommended Power Supply Redundancy Scheme
In order to ensure full power supply redundancy for both data switching and Inline
power, you can use an Avaya P330 BUPS (Backup Power Supply) and an external
Inline DC power supply shelf (made by APC, providing isolated 54 VDC) that also
provides additional Inline power (see Figure 2).
Note: Avaya recommends using the APC (Advanced Power Conversion PLC) Front
End AC-DC Power Shelf (catalog number APC-R2400A111) populated with APC
800W PSUs (catalog number APC-A0800-085-545-CA1).
This power shelf can house up to three 800W power supplies, yielding up to 2,400W
of external power. It can provide up to 405W of Inline power per P333T-PWR
switch. In a fully populated power shelf configuration, you can provide additional
Inline power to 6 to 12 P333T-PWR switches (depending on configuration -- see
Table 3).

Sample Scheme
Figure 3 shows a connection example for a stack of three P333T-PWR switches. This
configuration provides power supply redundancy and up to 405W of Inline power
per P333T-PWR switch. Table 2 lists the equipment required for this scenario.

Budgeting Power
When deciding how many 800W PSUs to install in the APC external DC power
shelf, you need to take into account the configuration of the powerinline external
power parameter in the P333T-PWR switch (set using the set powerinline
external power CLI command). Refer to Table 3 for guidelines:
If you set the powerinline external power parameter to other values, you need to
recalculate the number of switches supported accordingly.
Note: The Avaya P330 BUPS can support up to four P333T-PWR modules. If you are
backing up more than four P333T-PWR switches using the APC power shell,
calculate the number of P330 BUPS units needed accordingly.
