Important Information
Avid recommends that you read all the information in these release
notes thoroughly before installing or using any new software release.
If you have an Avid AirSpace system and Avid Unity TransferManager
in your workgroup environment, you need to configure the Alteon
Web switch. Use the following procedures to configure the switch.
The Alteon 180 Web switch has a console port that allows you to view
the switch’s configuration parameters. The following instructions
describe how to connect a terminal to the console port to view the
switch settings and make any necessary changes to the settings.
These instructions include the following topics:
• System Requirements
• Establishing a Console Connection
• Configuring the Alteon 180 Web Switch
System Requirements
To verify or change the configuration settings for the Alteon 180 Web
switch, you must establish a console (DCE) connection. To establish a
console connection, you must provide the following:
• An ASCII terminal (such as your NewsCutter) or other computer
running ASCII terminal emulation software (such as
Alteon 180™and 180E Web Switch

HyperTerminal in Windows 2000) set to the parameters provided
below.
• an Alteon 180 Web switch running WebOS software
• a 9-pin to 9-pin standard serial extension cable (this cable is
provided with your Alteon 180 switch)
Establishing a Console Connection
To verify or change the configuration settings for the Alteon 180 Web
switch, you must do the following:
• connect one end of the serial cable to the 9-pin DB9 serial
connector (labeled Console) on the front of the Alteon 180 Switch
• connect the other end of the serial cable to the 9-pin DB9 serial
connector on the back of the PC you are using as a terminal
console (this could be the NewsCutter or other PC running the
Windows operating system)
• run HyperTerminal (or other terminal emulation software) to
establish a connection to the WebOS Setup utility main menu for
viewing or changing the Alteon 180 switch configuration
parameters

To establish a console connection and access the main menu:
1. Connect the serial cable to the Console port on the front of the
switch and the 9-pin serial port on the rear of the terminal PC.
2. Turn on the switch and terminal PC.
3. Enter the password when prompted.
The default administrator password is admin. Once your
password is verified, the Main Menu appears.
4. Open HyperTerminal as follows:
a. Press Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and point
to Communications.
b. Select HyperTerminal.
c. Set up a HyperTerminal session with your serial connection
(the port to which you connected the serial cable).
nFor more information about running HyperTerminal, see your Microsoft
documentation.
Configuring the Alteon 180 Web Switch
The Alteon 180 Web switch WebOS software includes a Setup utility.
Use the Setup utility as instructed in the remainder of this document
to enter all the necessary information required for the proper switch
configuration.
When you run the Setup utility, you are prompted to provide the
following information:
• Basic system information
- Date and time
- Whether to use BOOTP or not
- Whether to use Spanning-Tree Protocol or not

• Optional configuration for each port
- Speed, duplex, flow control, and negotiation mode (as
appropriate)
- Whether to use VLAN tagging or not (as appropriate)
• Optional configuration for each VLAN
-NameofVLAN
- Whether the VLAN uses Jumbo Frames or not
- Which ports are included in the VLAN
• Optional configuration of IP parameters
- IP address, subnet mask, and gateway IP address for each IP
static route
- Whether IP forwarding is enabled or not
- Whether the RIP supply is enabled or not
Required Settings
The Alteon 180 Web switch must be configured to use the following
parameters:

Using the Setup Utility
If you have never run Setup on this switch you will be asked to do so
when you log in. You can also manually activate the Setup utility from
the command line interface any time after you log in to the switch.
• To start the Setup Utility and view the switch parameters
immediately after you log in, see “Starting the Setup Utility When
You Log In” on page 5.
• To manually restart the Setup Utility and view switch parameters
any time after you log in to the switch as the administrator, see
“Manually Restarting the Setup Utility” on page 9.
Starting the Setup Utility When You Log In
The Setup prompt appears automatically when you login as the
system administrator under the default factory settings.
To automatically start the Setup utility after login:
1. Connect to the console.
After connecting, the login prompt appears as follows:

2. Enter admin as the administrator password.
If the default configuration is detected, the system prompts:
Connect to Alteon AceSwitch 180
The switch is booted with the default
configuration.
.....
Would you like to run “Set Up” to configure the
switch? [y/n]:
3. Enter y to configure the switch (or nto bypass the Setup utility if
you do not want to proceed.)
Viewing or Changing Switch Parameters
After the WebOS Setup utility starts, the system prompts:
Set Up will walk you through the configuration of
System Date and Time, BOOTP, Spanning Tree, Port
Speed/Mode. VLANs, and IP interfaces. (type
Ctrl-c to abort Set Up}
Will you be configuring VLANs? [y/n]:
To view the parameters and make any necessary changes:
1. Type n and press Enter.
If you decide later that you need to configure VLANs, you can
configure them using the Setup utility configuration menus as
described in your Alteon 180 Web switch documentation.
Next, the Setup utility prompts you to enter basic system
information, including the date and time.
2. Enter the current month using a number from 1 to 12.
To keep the current month, press Enter
3. Enter the current day of the month using a number from 1 to 31.
To keep the current day, press Enter.

4. Enter the last two digits of the year using a number from 00 to 99.
“01” is considered the year 2001. To keep the current year, press
Enter.
The system displays the date and time settings.
5. Enter the hour of the current day using a number from 00 to 24. To
keep the current hour, press Enter.
6. Enter the minutes of the current hour using a number from 00 to
59. To keep the current minute, press Enter.
7. Enter the seconds of the current minute using a number from 00 to
59. To keep the current seconds, press Enter.
The system displays the date and time settings.
nFor each of the remaining steps, press Enter if you want to keep the current
settings.
The following prompt appears:
BootP Option:
Current BOOTP usage:Disabled
Enter new BOOTP usage [d/e]:
8. Type dto disable BOOTP and press Enter.
If available on your network, a BOOTP server can supply the
switch with IP parameters so that you do not have to enter them
manually. BOOTP must be disabled, however, before the switch
will prompt for IP parameters.
9. The Spanning Tree setting appears:
Spanning Tree:

Turn Spanning Tree Off? [y/n]:
10. Type nand press Enter.
11. The Port Config setting appears:

12. Press Enter to continue to the next prompt.
The IP default gateway prompt appears.
13. Press Enter to continue to the next prompt.
The Enable IP forwarding prompt appears
Enable IP forwarding? [y/n]
14. Type nand press Enter to disable IP forwarding.
The Routing Interface Protocol (RIP) supply prompt appears.
Enable RIP supply? [y/n]
15. Type n and press Enter to disable RIP supply.
The system prompts you to restart the Setup Utility or continue.
Would you like to run from the top again? [y/n]
16. Type nand press Enter to continue.
The Review changes prompt appears.
Review the changes made? [y/n]
17. Enter yto review the changes or nto continue without reviewing.
Press Enter. If you press y, go to step 19. If you type n and do not
apply the changes, the system prompts with:
Abort all changes? [y/n]
18. Enter yto discard the changes to flash memory, or n to return to
the Apply the changes? prompt.
19. Decide whether you want to make the changes permanent at the
following prompt:
Save changes to flash? [y/n]
20. Enter y to save your changes to flash memory, or nto continue
without saving the changes. Changes are normally saved.
Using the Boot Options Menu
To use the Boot Options menu, you must be logged in to the switch as
an administrator. The Boot Options menu allows you to select a

configuration block to be used the next time you reset or restart the
switch.
nWhen you make configuration changes to the switch, you must save the
changes so they are used beyond the next time you reset or restart the switch.
This is called saving the active configuration block.
To access the Boot Options menu and make the necessary selections:
1. At the main# prompt, type boot and press Enter.
The Boot Option# prompt appears.
2. Type conf.
The Specify new block to use prompt appears.
3. Type active and press Enter.
Your new configuration changes are placed in the active
configuration block and used the next time you reset or restart the
switch. The previous configuration is copied into the backup
configuration block.
nThere is also a factory configuration block. This hold the default configuration
set by the factory when your switch was constructed. Under certain
circumstances, you might want to change the switch configuration to this
default. This is useful when a customer-configured switch is moved to a
network environment where it will be reconfigured for a different purpose.
4. Continue with “Manually Restarting the Setup Utility” on page 9.
Manually Restarting the Setup Utility
To manually restart the Setup Utility:
1. At the administrator prompt (#) type the following:
/cfg/setup

2. Type cfg and press Enter.
The configuration# prompt appears.
3. Type vlan and press Enter.
4. Type 1and press Enter for the VLAN number.
The VLAN1# prompt appears.
5. Type jumbo and press Enter.
6. Type eand press Enter to enable jumbo Frame support.
nJumbo Frame support must be enabled.
7. At the VLAN1# prompt, type ../.. and press Enter to return to the
main menu prompt.
8. At main#, type apply and press Enter.
9. At main#, type save and press Enter.
10. Type yand press Enter to confirm saving FLASH.
11. Type exit and press Enter.
12. Turn the system off and then back on.
This completes set up of the Alteon 180 Web switch configuration
parameters.
