Beforeyoustart,readtheseinstructionsfirsttounderstandwhatyouneedtodotoinstallthisproduct.
TheseinstallationinstructionsareforourupgradeproductdesignedspecificallyforaJMJRoadWornMustang
Bassinstrumentthatproducesonepickuptone.Thissimpleupgradewillgiveyoufourpickuptones.
Assumptions
ThisPickupSwitchUpgrade
TM productisdesignedtouseoneVolumeandoneTonecontrolforallofyour
instrument’spickups.Yourinstrumentwillhave2magneticpickupcoilswithtwoseparatewiresattachedto
eachpickupcoil.Note:ActiveorPizeopickupsarenotsupported.
ToolsNeeded
Youmayneedoneormoreofthefollowingtools(notincludedwithpurchase)toinstallthisproduct.
Wirecutters/strippers,regularpliers
Drillbits:1/16”(1.6mm),5/16”(7.9mm)
SmallPhillips&straightslotscrewdriver(a4-wayscrewdrivercanbeusedasadeep-wellsocketto
tightenswitchmountingnuts
Ohmmetertomeasureelectricalcontinuity
Solderingiron(25/30wattmax.)withfinetip,rosin-coresolder.022”diameter
Preamble
Thisinstallationwillhaveyoucuttingexistingwiresonyourinstrument.Youwillalsomakewireconnections
toincreasethelengthofexistingwires,andmayneedtodrillholesinyourinstrumentbody.Becauseyouwill
makechangestoyourinstrument,youneedtohaveaplantoinstallthisPickupSwitchUpgrade
TM product.
SeetheFigure1–TypicalStockWiringonalaterpageofthisdocument.Useapenciltodrawtheoriginal
circuitofyourinstrumentbeforeyouproceed.Whenyoudocumentwherethewiresonourinstrument(andthe
colorsofthesewires)wereconnected,youwillhaveawaytorestoreittoitsoriginalconditionshouldit
becomenecessary.Sincethereisalargevariationofwiringschematicsthatspans50years,youneedtodraw
thecircuitthatisspecifictoyourowninstrument.
AddingExtraWire
Aftercuttingthepickupwires(describedlater),the
pickupwireswillbetooshorttoreachthespecified
connectionoftheGreenterminalstrip(J1)onthe
PickupSwitchUpgrade
TM product.Youwillcutthe
REDandBLACKwiresthatareintheincludedPARTS
BAGintoshorterlengthsandelectricallyconnectthem
togethertopermitthewiretoreachtheGreenterminal
stripconnections.Youwillusetheprovided2-wireUY2
yellow/clearconnectortojointhewires.
Completelyinsertthetwowirestobejoinedintothe
UY2connector.UseplierstofirmlysqueezetheUY2
connectortopyellowbuttonsoitisflushwiththeclear
bodytocreateapermanentelectricalconnection.After
extendingthewires,verifyelectricalcontinuitybetween
thetwopickupwiresusinganohmmeter(somecoil
resistancewillbepresent).

1.JMJROADWORNMUSTANGBASSINSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS
YouareinstallingafactoryassembledandtestedupgradethatcontainsourT2P-Switch.Thisupgradeisfora
JMJRoadWornMustangBassorsimilarcloneinstrumentwithtwomagneticcoil-woundpickups.
ThisupgradeincludesaPARTS BAGwiththefollowingitemsusedforinstallation.
Headstockdecal,wiredecals
A12”(30.4cm)lengtheachofBlackandRedinsulatedwiretolengthenpickupwires
5yellow/clearconnectors(UY2)toextendpickupwires
1.Preparation
Ifapplicable,removeyourstringsforeasyaccesstoallcomponents.Removeallpickguardscrewsandcarefully
removethepickguard.Whileviewingthebackofthepickguard,documenttheexistingwiringbeforeanything
isdisconnected.YourinstrumentshouldbesimilartothatshowninFigure1–TypicalStockWiringinthis
document.Ifnot,usethisfiguretodocumentyourinstrumentwiring.
2.MakingWiringRevisions
RefertoFigure2–UpgradeWiringRevisionswhilecompletingthesewirerevisionsteps.
Note:Item“C”and“D”ofFigure2isNotapplicabletothisinstallation
1.Asdescribedinitem“A”ofFigure2,cutthepickupjumperwirethatconnectsonepickuptotheother
sothereisanequalamountofwirecomingfromeachpickup.Donotstripeitherofthewireendsthat
areconnectedtothepickups.
2.Asdescribedinitem“B”ofFigure2,cuteachpickupwire6”(15.2cm)fromeachpickup.Donotstrip
eitherofthewireendsthatareconnectedtothepickup.
3.UsingaUY2connector,insertoneendofa6”blackwireintotheconnector.InsertoneendoftheNeck
pickupwireintotheUY2connector.Visuallyconfirmthatbothwiresare“bottomed”intheconnector.
UseplierstopressontheyellowbuttonoftheUY2connectorsoitisflushwiththeclearbody.
4.UsingaUY2connector,insertoneendofa6”redwireintotheconnector.Insertoneendoftheother
NeckpickupwireintotheUY2connector.Visuallyconfirmthatbothwiresare“bottomed”.Usepliers
topressontheyellowbuttonoftheUY2connectorsoitisflushwiththeclearbody.
5.Repeatsteps#3and#4fortheBridgepickup.
6.Useanohmmetertoconfirmcontinuityforeachpickupcoilpair(youwillreadsomeresistance).Ifyou
readanopencircuit,trypressingdownmorefirmlyoneachoftheUY2connectorstoproduce
continuity.Ifyoucannotconfirmcontinuity,youmayneedtosnipouttheUY2connectorsandsolder
thewirestogether.Makesurethesolderjointsareinsulatedtopreventshortingissues.

3.InstallingtheUpgrade
TerminalStrip
Toattachwirestothegreenterminalstrip(J1)ontheT2P-Switchproduct,useasmallscrewdriverorwriting
pentipandpressdownonthesquarereleasebuttonlocateddirectlyabovethewirehole.Holdthebuttondown
andinsertthestrippedwirecompletelyintothewireconnectionholeandthenreleasethebutton.Lightlytugon
thewiretoconfirmitisfirmlygrippedbytheTerminalStrip.Alegendisprintedonthecircuitboardwiththe
nameofeachterminalstripwireholefromlefttoright.Attacheachwiretothecorrectterminalstriphole.

T2P-Switch (with 6-hole terminal strip): [GND] [VOL] [+]NECK[-] [+]BRDG[-]
Caution:Donotinsertharditemsinthewireholesbecauseitwilldecreasereliableelectricalconnection.
Doingsowillvoidyourproductwarranty.
4.ConnectingYourWires
RefertoFigure5–FinalUpgradeWiringwhilecompletingthesewirerevisionsteps.
Thereisnoindustrystandardforpickupwireleadcolors.Morecommoncolorpairsarered/black,red/white,
black/whiteandwhite/shield.Youareadvisedtouseconsistencywhenconnectingyourpickupwirecolorpairs
tothe[+]and[–]pickupconnectionsonthegreenterminalstrip(J1).
Determinewhichwirecolorforeachpickupcoilwillbeattachedtotheapplicable[+]and[–]greenterminal
stripconnectoronourT2P-Switch.Ifoneofthepickupwireconnectionsisashieldedlead,alwaysconnectthe
shieldtoaBLACK[–]wiretobeinsertedinthegreenterminalstriponourswitchingsystem.
Stripoff3/16”(4.7mm)insulationfromtheendofeachpickupwireandtwisttheexposedwirestrandssothey
aretightlybound.Ifdesired,useasolderingirontolightlytintheexposedwires.Insertthewiresofeach
pickuppairintothecorrectlocationonthegreenterminalstrip(J1)usingtheprocessdescribedintheabove
“TerminalStrip”topic.
Note:Ifyouhaveabridgegroundwirecomingfromthebridge(andmaybefrombodycavityshielding),usea
UY2connectortoattachthemtotheprovidedblackwireattachedtothegroundleadoftheoutputjack.
ConnectingyourtwopickupcoilstoourT2P-Switchproduct
ConnectyourNECKpickupcoilwirepairtothe [+]NECK[-]connectionsonthegreenterminalstrip
ConnectyourBRIDGEpickupcoilwirepairtothe[+]BRDG[-]connectionsonthegreenterminalstrip

T2P-SwitchProductIdentificationandUseSummary
Hereisasummaryofswitchuseforthisproduct(seeFigure4–T2P-SwitchOrientationforswitch

SW3isanON-ONswitchthatchangesthepickupsfromnormalphasetoreversephase
SW5isanON-ONswitchthatchangesthepickupsfromParalleltoSeriesconnectivity
ForaRight-HandedInstrument:
SW3 putsonthebridgeandneckpickupcoilseitherinnormalphase(down),orreversephase(up).
SW5 Whenthisswitchisdown(seeFigure4),thepickupsareinaParallelcircuit.
WhenthisswitchisupitputsthebridgeandneckpickupsinaSeriescircuit.
Validating
Connectyourinstrumenttoanamplifiedsourcewiththevolumesettolow.Inturn,puttheswitchesinthe
Up/Downcombinationsasdescribedin“SwitchIdentificationandUseSummary”topicwhilegentlytapping
themagnetofthepickupcoilswithasmallscrewdrivertoconfirmpickupresponse.Alsoconfirmthecorrect
operationoftheVolumeandTonecontrols.
Ifyoureceivethestatedresults,installtheJMJupgradewiththescrewsthathelddownyourstockcontrolplate.
WelcometotheGrandCanyonWiderangeofAweSomepickuptones.
Thisproductwillgiveyourinstrumentawiderspectrumofuniquepickupsoundsthatyoucannotgetwithyour
stockinstrument.Nobatteriesorsensitiveelectronicstogodead.
