The following will enable you to observe good working
practices, keep yourself and fellow workers safe and main-
tain your tools and equipment in good working order.
Mains Powered Tools
•Tools are supplied with an attached 13 Amp UK 3 pin plug,
fitted with 5 amp fuse.
•Inspect the cable and plug to ensure that neither are
damaged. Repair if necessary by a suitably qualified
person.
•Do not use when or where it is liable to get wet.
Workplace
•Do not use 230V a.c. powered tools anywhere
within a site area that is flooded.
•Keep machine clean.
•Leave machine unplugged until work is about to
commence.
•Always disconnect by pulling on the plug body
and not the cable.
•Carry out a final check e.g. check the cutting tool
is securely tightened in the machine and the
correct speed and function set.
•Ensure you are comfortable before you start work,
balanced,not reaching etc.
•Wear appropriate safety clothing, goggles, gloves,
masks etc.Wear ear defenders at all times.
•If you have long hair wear a hair net or helmet to prevent
it being caught up in the rotating parts of the machine.
•Consideration should be given to the removal of rings
and wristwatches.
•Consideration should also be given to non-slip
footwear etc.
•If another person is to use the machine, ensure they are
suitably qualified to use it.
•Do not use the machine if you are tired or distracted.
•Do not use this machine within the designated safety
areas of flammable liquid stores or in areas where there
may be volatile gases.
•Check cutters are correct type and size, are
undamaged and are kept clean and sharp, this will
maintain their operating performance and lessen the
loading on the machine.
•OBSERVE…. make sure you know what is
happening around you and USE YOUR COMMON SENSE.
WARNING!! KEEP TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT OUT OF REACH OF
YOUNG CHILDREN
KEEP WORK AREA AS
UNCLUTTERED AS IS PRACTICAL.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES
SHOULD CHILDREN BE ALLOWED
IN WORK AREAS.
Specific Safety Precautions for Grinding Machines
1. Do not operate your machine until it is completely
assembled and installed according to the instructions.
2. If you are not familiar with the operation of grinding
machines, obtain advice from your supervisor or instructor
or another qualified person.
3. Only use grinding wheels or attachments rated higher
than 3600 rpm with a 5/8”(16mm) arbor on the left hand
stone station on this machine.
4. Never use a chipped or cracked wheel. Always inspect
each wheel before mounting it on the grinder. If during
inspection you discover a damaged grinding wheel, replace
it immediately.
5. Do not over tighten wheel nuts.
6. Always maintain a distance of 2mm or less between the
wheel and the tool rest. Adjust the tool rests as the wheels
decrease in size.
7. Ensure the tool rests are tightened so they cannot move
while in use.
8. Never grind on a cold wheel. The grinder should always
be run for at least one minute before applying work to it.
9. Never grind on the side of the wheel. Always grind on
the face of the wheel only.
10. Never apply coolant directly to a grinding wheel, it may
cause the bonding to fail. If the work piece becomes hot,
dip it into a water pot to cool it down.
11. Hot sparks are a hazard! Never carry out grinding
operations near flammable gas or liquid.

Specific Safety Precautions for Grinding Machines
5
12. Always make sure the spark guards and eye shields
are in place, that they are properly adjusted and secured.
13. Keep the spark guards close to the wheels and
re-adjust them as the wheels wear.
14. Ensure the soft washer and the flanges furnished with
the grinder are used to mount any attachments (grinding
wheels, wire brushes, buffing wheels, etc) onto the shaft.
15. Always stand to one side of the grinder when starting
the machine.
16. Avoid awkward hand positions where a sudden slip
could cause the hands to come into contact with a grinding
wheel, wire brush etc.
17. If the wheel requires dressing, dress only the front of
the wheel, do not dress the sides.

ALWAYS WEAR EAR DEFENDERS
AND SAFETY GOGGLES.
Carry out final checks e.g. check the gap between the tool
rest and the stone is correct, check the stones are not badly
deformed (rounded edges, grooved face, etc; unless you
have specifically shaped the stone to these profiles), check
the eye shield is correctly positioned.Have a cooling pot
to hand if you need it. Fill the water container (L) to a level
about 15-20mm below the lip of the container, see fig 01

Mark the bevel with a marker to allow you to see where
the grinding will occur.
The most common secondary bevel is 30° when the main
body of the tool is ground at 25°. The chart below gives
you some guidance as to which angle is most suited to
which materials.
Place the tool into the jig (N) around half way along the
blade and position it against the jig’s stops, see fig 3.
Tighten the clamping knobs. Slide the assembly onto the
universal bar (M), see fig 04.

Using an angle gauge, adjust the universal support bar
with the micro adjuster (M) to set the‘Primary Bevel’at 25˚
degrees. Make sure the heel of the bevel touches the
grinding stone, see fig 06-08.
Turn the wet stone (I) by hand to check the full width of
the ‘Primary Bevel’ is in contact with the stone. Make
adjustments to the universal support bar until even
contact.
Check that everything is secure, place a container under
the water trough drain hose (Q).Make sure the bevel is not
in contact with the wet stone and switch on the grinder.
Wait until it reaches full speed.Check it runs smoothly,
no knocking or scraping noises for example.Twist the
regulator knob to allow water to cascade down onto the
wet stone.Allow the water to cover the stone.

9
Lower the blade so it is in contact with the revolving stone.
Observe how the water flows over the width of the blade.
This is very important to create an even bevel. Keep light
finger pressure on the tool and slide it from left to right.

After a number of passes wipe the blade to assess the
progress. A new, very bright line should appear which
needs to be even across the length of the blade. If the
honed edge appears one-sided simply return the guide
and tool to the water stone and draw back again applying
more pressure to the side with the least apparent grind.
You should apply slightly more pressure to the side least
ground.
The secondary bevel will work even if it is very small. It
doesn’t need to be much more than 1.0mm in width for it
to achieve the desired effect. When finished switch off the
grinder.
11
SWITCH OFF THE MACHINE!
12
Tip: Before removing the blade from the square edge jig
(N), use a marker to mark the position of bevel angle as
shown in fig 12.This will allow you to clamp the blade in
the same position the next time it needs re sharpening.
As with all tools, this guide will need care and a fair degree
of familiarisation before the user is able to get perfect
results. You might want to spend time on sharpening some
old tools first.
Remember, any edge is a combination of two faces. The
tools, no matter how finely ground, will need to have
had their reverse side flattened and honed so that it is as
equally fine as the bevel edge is ground.
DISCONNECT THE WET & DRY
GRINDER FROM THE MAINS
SUPPLY.
Remove the 200mm wet grinding stone and clean the
trough, pour away any water left in the water container
(L) and leave it to dry. Remove the container beneath the
drain hose and dispose of the contents.
NOTE: DO NOT leave the stone submerged in water if
the grinder is not in use. This will prevent the stone
from swelling and cracking.
NOTE: Store and use at room temperature.

Grasp the stone and using a socket spanner to loosen the
nut, remember undo the nut in the direction of the stone’s
rotation as indicated by the embossed arrow on
the guard cover.
Remove plate flange and carefully remove the stone.
Clean the interior stone guard, inspect the new stone for
cracks and damage to either the front face or the edges
before fitting. Carefully slide the stone on the shaft,
replace the plate flange and the nut then tighten against
the rotation of the stone.DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.
Reconnect the grinder to the mains supply, give the grinder
a ‘short burst’, by switching it on and off quickly. Check the
grinder is not subject to any undue vibration. If the grinder
does vibrate, switch off immediately and disconnect from
the main supply. Remove the guard cover and check stone
and plate flange are fitted correctly. Check again, if the
grinder is still vibrating the stone/s may need dressing.
Dress the new stone lightly to ensure a‘good face’and
good concentricity.
Switch on the grinder, wait until it reaches full speed and
leave the machine running for at least one minute before
carrying out any work. Apply a work piece and check that
the spark guard is correctly positioned and that the tool
rest is securely fixed. Switch off and wait until the grinder
comes to a complete stop.

Dressing the Stone
If the grinder starts to vibrate or uneven wear appears on
the stones including crests dips or rounded edges, you
may need to dress the stones. The stone will need to be
dressed out using a suitable wheel dressing stick. See our
website and in our catalogue for details.
Code 410074
Code 410057
Wheel Dressing Stick for coarse carborundum and dressing
worn or unbalanced wheels.
Diamond Dressing Block useful for dressing across the
width of the grinding wheels or to produce flatter surfaces
than single point dressers.
Switch the grinder on and allow it to run for at least one
minute. Rest the dressing tool on the tool rest and advance
it to the stone until it touches the maximum diameter;
gently move the dresser back and forth across the face of
the stone until all irregularities have been removed and
the edges of the stone are nice and sharp.

Ultimate Edge Accessories
Ultimate Edge Micro Bevel Gauge code 105427Axminster Honing Guide Assembly code 105281
The Ultimate Edge Honing Guide is perfect for plane blades,
joinery chisels etc, this fits onto the round bar. Clamping
the blade tightly, both primary and secondary bevels can
be achieved if required. The whole jig is manufactured from
stainless steel and has a simple setting screw to control
the width. The LH jaw is reversible and has twin jaws, one
curved so that chisels that do not have perfectly parallel
sides (such as Japanese and old hand forged chisels) can be
clamped, the other jaw being parallel. The jaws are dove-
tailed, so securely clamp the tools against the body. The
jaws accommodate blades from 3-66mm in width.A setting
gauge is provided to enable the correct sharpening angle
to be set based upon a standard projection of the cutting
tool at 25mm from the guide.
Having ground the primary bevel on any tool, the
secondary bevel or micro bevel actually does the majority
of the work. It is exactly what it says it is; a micro bevel
which can be increased with ease each time the tool
becomes dull. The micro bevel guide is made of stainless
steel and aluminium and has the ability to accept the tool
still mounted in the honing guide, the precise angle of the
micro bevel can be easily set and with a few positive passes
over a fine diamond or water stone, a superb edge can be
achieved.
