Congratulations on your

new BHM-Tech hearing

system

Many thanks for choosing a quality product from BHM-

Tech. The digital hearing system for spectacle wearers,

pan, is manufactured in Austria according to stipu-

lations set by the medical device directive 93/42/EWG,

as well as the latest audiological ﬁndings and technical

innovations. It bears the CE mark and meets the latest

requirements in quality and security.

By complying with the points listed in this User

Instruction, pan is sure to be a reliable partner for

many years to come.

The ﬁrst few days of using a new hearing system will

focus primarily on familiarising yourself with the

device and becoming accustomed to the new sound

impressions.

The ampliﬁcation and functions of your new hearing

system have been tailored to your individual require-

ments by your hearing aid acoustician/ doctor.

How long it takes to become accustomed to the

device may vary from person to person.

Success often depends on a willingness to engage

with the new sound impressions.

It is therefore advisable to try wearing your new hear-

ing system regularly, even if it may feel a little strange

to begin with.

Your hearing aid acoustician/doctor will also instruct

and inform you as regards ﬁrst-time use, how to wear

it properly and regular maintenance measures by

pan.

Instructions for Use

Purpose:

Hearing systems are developed to improve hearing.

The essential function of a hearing system is to pick

up the sound, amplify it and reproduce the signal at

the ear drum of the hearing-impaired person. Your

hearing system is suitable for compensating for

sensorineural and combined hearing loss, as well as

for combating tinnitus with pan Ti.

Warning note for the hearing aid acoustician/

doctor: This hearing system can generate an

output sound pressure level of 132 dBSPL.

Particular care must be taken when adjusting

the device as there is a risk of damage to the

user’s residual hearing.

Before use

Please check that the hearing system functions and

is in proper condition before use. The hearing system

must in no way be used if there is any suspicion that

it does not work ﬂawlessly or is damaged.

Donotexposethehearingsystemtoanyexcessive

mechanical burdens. If it should fall on the ﬂoor or is

otherwise damaged, please send it to your hearing

aid acoustician/doctor to be checked and repaired.

Never give the hearing system to others and/or

prevent unauthorised use.

Warning! Hearing systems, their components and

batteries can be dangerous, cause severe injury and

even be fatal if swallowed or handled in an improper

manner.

Getting started

Your doctor and/or hearing aid acoustician will

provide you with comprehensive instruction on how

to handle your pan hearing system and accessories.

IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE THE SAFETY AND

FUNCTIONALITY OF THE HEARING SYSTEM, ONLY

ACCESSORIES FROM THE FIRM BHM-TECH MUST

BE USED.

The external receiver

The receiver 5 and earpiece 6selected to suit your

requirements will be mounted on the pan hearing

system by your professional hearing aid acoustician/

doctor.

Your doctor or hearing aid acoustician will instruct

you fully on the handling, maintenance and daily care

ofyourhearingsystem,externalreceiverandearpiece.

In the case of discomfort or skin irritation when

wearing, please contact your doctor or hearing aid

acoustician directly.

Battery compartment

Before using, open the battery compartment 2 and

make sure that you use a new battery.

Inserting or changing the battery

When inserting a new battery, please make sure that

the +pole is on the same side as the

+sign in the battery compartment. When replacing

a battery, please ensure that you remove the old

battery ﬁrst before inserting the new one.

Only use zinc air batteries in size 312.

Please note that a weak battery may impair the trans-

mission characteristics of your hearing system.

Applying the external receiver

Put on your spectacles including the hearing system.

Take hold of the receiver tube 4at the bend and

presstheearpieceintotheauditorycanal(seediagram

below).Theearpieceshouldbeinsertedintotheear

until the receiver tube lies against it. Once the

earpiece is correctly placed, the receiver tube should

not be protruding from the ear when observed in the

mirror. Caution: Never try to change the shape of the

tube system yourself.

Removing the external receiver

Take the receiver tube in your thumb and foreﬁnger

andwithdrawitcarefullyfromtheauditorycanal(see

diagrambelow).Pleasecontactyourhearingaid

acoustician/doctor if you have difﬁculty removing it.

Battery warning tone

Your hearing system will alert you when the battery

voltage is low. A series of tones will remind you of

this situation, until you change the battery or it runs

out completely. The hearing system will then switch

off automatically. We therefore recommend always

keeping a new battery readily available. All functions

are automatically restored once a new battery has

been inserted.

Warnings as regards the battery

Batteries contain dangerous substances and should

be carefully stored for your own safety and that of

your environment. Please retain the used batteries

and return them to your hearing aid acoustician/

doctor for correct disposal. Do not try to recharge

batteries that are not intended for such a purpose, as

theymayexpireorexplode.Youmustneverdestroy

used batteries by burning them. Keep out of reach of

children. If a child happens to swallow a battery,

seek immediate medical attention.

Operation

Switch-on delay

When programming your hearing system, your hear-

ing aid acoustician/doctor can activate a switch-on

delay. This allows you to apply the hearing system’s

externalreceivercomfortablyintheearwithoutany

experiencingdisturbingwhistlingcausedbyacoustic

feedback. After closing the battery compartment, the

hearing system will switch on after the programmed

time.

•Ifthebatterycompartment2is fully closed, the

hearing system will be switched on and pro-

gramme 1 is activated.

•Byopeningthebatterycompartment2, you will

switch off the hearing system. The easiest way to

do so is by opening the compartment with your

ﬁngernail.

Programme selection button

If your hearing aid acoustician/doctor has programmed

several programmes into your hearing system, you

can select these using the programme selection

button. You will hear one or more tones that signal

whichprogrammeyouhavejustselected(1signal

tone = programme 1; 2 signal tones = programme

2;etc.).

The programmes can be chosen by tapping the pro-

grammeselectionbutton(seediagrambelow).

By switching the device off and on again, you will

return by default to programme 1.

Making calls

If your hearing system has been adjusted with a

normal power receiver and an open tulip or dome

earpiece, you can make calls quite normally by hold-

ing the telephone receiver to your auricle. If your

hearing system has been adapted with a high power

receiver with earpiece or individual otoplasty, it may be

necessary to ﬁnd an optimum position of the telephone.

The following tips should help you: Put the telephone

receiver to your ear in the usual way. Slide the tele-

phone receiver near the microphone, but not directly

onit(seediagram).

If any acoustic feedback occurs, it may take a moment

for the digital feedback suppresser to adapt to

the hearing system. The acoustic feedback is also

reduced when the distance between the telephone

and the ear is somewhat bigger. According to your

requirements, your hearing aid acoustician/doctor

can also set up a special telephone programme.

After use

Maintenance and cleaning

• Pleasebeadvisedbyyourhearingaidacoustician/

doctor as regards the maintenance and daily

cleaning of your hearing system.

• Inuencessuchasdirt,wind,cold,heat,moisture,

leaky batteries, daily use, ageing device, etc.

may have negative effects on the properties of the

device. In order to minimise the likelihood of a

malfunction, the device must be cleaned and

maintained regularly.

• Pollution,sweatandmoistureshouldberemoved

fromyourhearingsystemdaily(wipedwithasoft,

drycloth).

• Thereceiverandearpiecemustbecleanedregu-

larly. Under no circumstances use water to clean it,

but only a soft, dry cloth.

•Pleasetakeoffyourhearingsystembefore

showering, washing your hair, stepping into a

sauna or steam room.

•Removethehearingsystemwhilstapplying

perfume, creams, hairspray or other cosmetics.

• Keepyourhearingsystemdryandclean.

• Nevertrytodrythehearingsystemwithahair-

dryer or in a microwave oven.

• For particularly hygienic and protective cleaning,

we recommend special products available from

specialist stores.

Under no circumstances use petrol or similar

chemical cleaning products.

Disposing of batteries

Empty batteries must be disposed of responsibly

within the meaning of environmental protection. As

such, please take these items to a special disposal

site. Your hearing aid acoustician/doctor will be happy

to help you in this.

technology product that must be disposed of respon-

sibly within the meaning of environmental protection.

General warning notes

Improper use of pan, of the accessories and/or of

the battery may endanger your health. Please read

the following points with great care:

• The basic setting of the pan hearing system is

carriedoutbyauthorisedexpertsaccordingtothe

particular hearing loss. The user must therefore

only use the easily accessible operator elements

intended for him or her, as per instructions.

• Donotwearyourhearingsysteminmines,quarries

or other places where detonations are carried out,

norinareasexposedtoexplosionhazardsinsofar

as these are not approved for wearing hearing

systems.

• Variouskindsofradiation,asoccurringforexample

incomputertomography(CT)ormagneticresonance

imaging(MRI),maydamageyourhearingsystem.

Therefore do not wear your hearing system if you

mustundergoamedicalexaminationofthiskind.

• Interference from alarm equipment, room moni-

toringsystems,radioandTV,mobilephones,etc.

is of lower intensity and is therefore harmless to

your hearing system. This radiation can, however,

affect the sound quality of your hearing system

short-term, or produce unusual tones.

• Intermsofelectromagneticinterference,suchas

transmitters, it may be that the hearing quality of

your hearing system is impaired. In this case,

please distance yourself from the source of the

disturbance.

Your mobile phone may inﬂuence the sound

quality of your hearing system or produce

unusual tones. Please keep both devices away

from each other as far as possible.

• Thefunctionofpanmaybeimpairedif,forexample,

the battery capacity is running out. If so, there is

particular risk when walking near road trafﬁc or if

you are otherwise dependent on warning noises.

• Pleasekeepyourbatteriesawayfrominfantsand

children.

• Neverreplacethebatterieswhenyouarewith

infants and children.

• Keep other people and children away from pan

when you are not using it.

• Nevertrytochargedisposablebatteriesinthe

charger!

• Swallowingthebatteriesendangershealthand

can cause serious injury and even death! Therefore:

Never store batteries alongside medication.

Please seek immediate medical attention in the

event of swallowing a battery.

• Improperhandlingmayloosensmall/thesmallest

components of the hearing system. Should a com-

ponent of this nature get into the throat, nose or

ear, please seek immediate medical attention.

• Pleaseconsultadoctorifyounoticeaforeignobject

in your ear canal, if skin irritation occurs or if by

wearingthehearingsystemyouexperiencean

increasedincidenceofcerumen(earwax).

• pan is able to emit signals with very high volume.

In order to prevent possible damage to residual

hearing, the hearing system must be adjusted by a

qualiﬁed hearing aid acoustician or doctor.

• Neverusepaninextremeweatherconditions,

suchasstronggustsofwind,solarirradiation(for

examplebehindthecarwindshield),extremeheat

(donotplaceonheatingdevices)orextremecold

(overnight in a cold car) and avoid contact with

chemicals or harsh cleaning agents.

•Consultyourhearingaidacoustician/doctorif

unpleasant itching, skin irritation or marking

occurs.

General notes

In the case of a malfunction or defect in your pan

device, please contact your hearing aid acoustician/

doctor immediately. Do not try to open or repair the

hearing system yourself. Improper handling will

result in the guarantee and warranty becoming void.

Regular maintenance and checking with your

hearing aid acoustician/doctor can prevent repairs.

your hearing aid acoustician/doctor if your hearing

system needs repair.
