Features of the AXON
Your AXON is fittedwitha novel methodof pitchrecognition
workingso quicklyand safelythatyoucan use yourAXONalso
witha bass guitar. At present,no comparable device offersyou
thisfeature.
The AXON is uniquebecause itrecognizes thepickpositionof
each string, and the AXON offersyounew possibilitiesto
control your MIDI instrument.
Your AXON is able to reduce the MIDI outputdatastreamasfar
aspossible to a minimum.According to the settingof thepreset
parameter, furtherreliefs are theresult.At previousdevices,
Pitch Bend data load theMIDI interfacestrongly.
If youdid not work witha comparable device before, youwill
get to know some terms whichare perhaps new foryou.
Therefore we would like to explainhere theextraordinary
possibilitiesyoucan use withyourAXON.
The mostinterestingand themostextraordinaryfeaturesofyour
AXON are undoubtedlythedifferentsplitpossibilities.
You can set a stringsplit inorder todividethesix stringsof your
guitarintotwoparts. In each part, yourMIDI instrumentcould
give outanother sound. For thatpurpose youwillfixa split
point- in thiscase a stringnumber- in order to set theborder
betweenthe two parts.
Assign a fretsplit in order to divide the neck of yourguitarinto
two parts.
Thinkof an accord accompaniment whichyou play in low-
pitched registers withan optional sound. Then youchangetoa
solo which is played in higher notes withanothersound. In this
case the split point is a fret number.
The most uniquefeatureofthe AXON NGC 60is the possibility
of picksplitting.
One split point can be defined to split the pick range betweenthe
pickup and the neck intotwo pick regions. An individualsound
can be assigned to each of these regions.
At each ofthe three split possibilities you can additionallyuse
the pick control function. You can change thevalue of each
MIDI controller with the pick position. Keyboard playersoften
use a modulation wheel in order to produce vibratoor filter
effects. With the pick control functionyou have the same
possibilities, only by changing thepick position.

How to use the HoldPedal
The Hold Pedal can be used to playan additional, thirdsoundof
yourMIDI instrument.In thiscase thecurrentsplit becomes
temporarily ineffectiveand youcan use anothersound.Allnotes
whichsoundwhilereleasingthepedal willsound untilthenext
pressure on theHold Pedal. Play a chordbydepressed Hold
Pedal. Withoutmutingthechord,yourelease theHold Pedal
now andthe Hold sound willbe locked. You canplayagainwith
thecurrentpresetto yourchordaccompaniment.Afterpressing
once more youcan play a new chord, theold one willbe
replaced by a new one. Or yousimply turnoff thechordwhile
pressingonce theHold Pedal shortlywithoutplayingat that
time.
Additionally, thepick control functioncan be used as wellfor
theHold sound.
You can also send a pre-programmed MIDI controllertothe
MIDI instrumentbypressingtheHold Pedal.Thiscouldbe the
controllerNo. 64(Sustain),thecontrollerNo.65(Portamento)
oreven thecontrollerNo.93 (Chorus).
AfterpressingtheHold Pedalyouare moreover abletofreeze
thealready playedtones in order to playonlyon yourguitar.
Then all otherMIDI soundsare suppressed. You can also realize
abypass functionin order to heartemporarilyyourguitarsound
alone.
How touse the ChainPedal
If you connect a footswitchto the chainsocket, youcan callup
successive presets. Pressing once the footswitchactivatesthe
next preset, hitting thefootswitchquicklytwice triggersthe
previous preset.
How touse the Mono Input
All instrumentswithpickups can be directly connected by a jack
cable to the MONO inputof yourAXON. At the frontof the
AXON is the potentiometer whichhelps you to set the
sensitivityoftheMONO input.Please consider thatnot all
featuresof the AXON are available whenusingtheMONO
input. The extremely fastpitch recognition is inactive. In this
case you work witha pitch recognition whichis a littlebit
slower. But it is comparable to devices whichwere already
offered bycompetitors. String Split, Pick Split and thePick
Control function are no longer available.

The Fret Splitdepends now on thepitchbecauseyourAXON
does notknow anythingaboutyourfrets.Thinkof a violinor
thinkofinstrumentswhichyouhave to connectby a
microphone. There are no limits toyourimaginationbutyoucan
not foresee theresultsin each case. We had already achieved
good results usingguitarand bass.
How to use the optional sound module
If your AXON is fittedby an embedded sound module,128
GENERAL MIDI SOUNDS in excellentqualitywill
immediately be available foryou.Additionally,thesound
module has an installedreverbas well as a choruseffectwhich
can be called up by the AXON.Combined witha sequenceror
similar devices youhave access to 480 sounds. Furthermore,11
differentdrumkits are available. The completeeffectrange
consistsof 11 reverb types, 11 chorustypesas wellas 42
variationprograms. Please takedetailsfrom theenclosed
descriptionofthesound module.
If you use a sequencer program, pleaseconnecttheMIDI OUT
ofyourAXON to the MIDI IN of yourcomputer, andtheMIDI
IN ofyourAXON to theMIDI OUT of thecomputer. In this
case the GLOBAL parameter "LOCAL" on theAXON has to be
LOCAL OFF.
Specialfunctions
Two special functionsofyourAXON are an exact tuningaid
whichis simple to use aswell aslevel control thathelps to avoid
overload.
How to start
Before startingthe AXON please make the necessary
connections. Please consider thatyoumustswitchon theAXON
after turningon your MIDI instrumentfirst, because theAXON
sends directly initializingdata toyourMIDI instrument.Thatis
why youhave to check the connections of yourMIDI cable from
the AXON to your MIDI instrument.
How toconnectyourguitarinterface
The UP/DOWN buttons of your guitarinterface are identicalto
the +/- value keys. You can use them to callupthe different

presetsofyourAXON.Moreover itis possibletochangethe
parametervaluesin editmode from yourguitar.Byusingthe
volume regulatorofyourguitarinterface,youcan controlthe
volume ofa sound at yourMIDI instrument.
How to connect your MIDIEquipment
Please connectthe MIDI OUT ofyourAXONtotheMIDIIN of
yourMIDI instrument.For thatpurpose, use a 5 pincommercial
DIN cable/MIDI cable. If youemploya sequencerprogram,
connectthe MIDI OUT of yourAXON to theMIDI IN of your
computeraswellas theMIDI IN ofyourMIDI instrumenttothe
MIDI OUT ofyourcomputer.
How tomountanAXONin a 19" rack
You can mountyourAXON ina
19"
rack by usingtheoptional
installationframe.In ordertofix,use onlytheoriginalscrews. If
youpreferanotherformof mounting,remove firsttherubberfoot
from thebottom of theAXON. Please use onlyscrews of thetype
M3 to fixthe
19"'
rack withthebottomof theAXON andtakecare
thatthescrews do notreach longerthan4 mm intotheAXON.
Longerscrews can damage theinsideof thedevice.
Parameters
All parametersare printedabove and below themiddleLED linein
order to see immediatelythecurrentparameter.So youmustnot
keep figuresin mindwhichbelong to some parameters. The GLO-
BAL parameters are above, theSPLIT and HOLD parametersare
below the LED line.
Global Parameter
If you use yourAXON for the first time you have to check the
settings of some global parameter in correspondence to yourMIDI
instrument:
Please check the basic MIDI channel and tuneyourguitarwiththe
embedded tuningaid of your AXON. Ifyou are in a hurryand if
you would like to play immediately withyourAXON, read the
explanations in the sections BASIC CH and tuningoftheguitar.
You must ensure thattheconnectedMIDI instrumentreceives Pitch
Bend Range information, otherwise you set thisvalue at yourMIDI
instrument to 12.Then you leap over all furtherparameters and you
can testthefactory presets.
In order to change one of theGLOBAL parameters switchyour

AXONin editmode. Press the+/- PARAMETER buttonsat the
same time. The EDIT LED lightsup andthe AXON is now inedit
mode. Please press theSELECT key several timesuntiltheLED
shows the word GLOBAL. The firstparameterLED appears and
indicatesyouthatyoucan changethefirstoftheglobal parameter
(basic MIDI channel).Press the+/- PARAMETER buttonsuntilthe
LED of yourdesired parameter blinks. At thedisplay, the current
valueofthe optionalparameteris always shown. Changethe value
of thewantedparameter by usingthe +/- valuebuttons. If you are
ready withyoursettings,leave theeditmode whilepressingthe+/-
PARAMETER keys at thesame time. The EDIT LED becomes dark
and youare in thepreset mode again.
BASIC CH
Basic MIDI channel:SettingI...10
Your AXON needs maximalseven successive MIDI channelsin
orderto controlaconnectedMIDI tonegenerator.One channelis
necessary foreach stringandan additionalchannelis requiredif
youwouldlike to use thespecial functionoftheHoldPedal.With
thebasic MIDI channelyouassign thefirstofseven channelswhich
willbeusedbyyourAXON.Allfurtherchannelsfollowimplicitly.
PBD RANGE
PitchbendRange OFF/I...24
Since yourconnected MIDI instrumentshould convertthepitch
changes of yourguitarcorrectly, youhave to set thePitchBend
Rangeofyour MIDI instrumentto thesame valueas thisone on the
AXON. The valueshows the maximumnumberof semitone steps
thatcan be converted withPitch Bend information, without
triggeringa new note on yourMIDI instrument. If yourMIDI
instrumentallows, this valueshouldbe set to at least 12(one
octave) or 24 for bass guitars(two octaves) .
OFF
Your AXON does not send Pitch Bend informationto theMIDI
instrument.
SEND PBDRG
Send Pitchbend Range:SettingON/OFF
If youare sure thatthe Pitch Bend Range of yourconnected MIDI
instrument and of yourAXON are set to the same value, youcan
switch thisparameter OFF.
This parameter has to be set to ON if yourMIDI instrumentstores
PitchBend Range in each preset separately. In thiscase the AXON
12

sends thePitchBendRangeinformationaftereach programchange
immediately again. This is necessaryby most KORG synthesizers.
and probablyby some othermanufacturers.IfyourMIDI
instrumentsstore PitchBend Rangeglobally,justliketheAXON
itself, thisparametershould be OFF.If youare not familiarwith
yourMIDI instrument,you shouldset thisparametertoON. Then
yourAXON willpossiblygive outsome unnecessaryMIDI databut
youwillhardlynoticeit.
STRGMODE
StringMode : How toset COMMON or SEPARATE
COMMON Mode
In common mode allstringsofyourguitarare assignedto thebasic
channel. In order to avoid conflictswithstillsoundingnotesof the
same channel,no PitchBendinformationis sentinthismode ifyou
playmore thanone note.So a solisticplayis possiblealthough
restrictive. If yourMIDI instrumentcan onlyreceive at one MIDI
channel,youshoulduse thismode.
In separate holdmodeall dataare givenoutat basicchannel+1
whilepressing theHold Pedal.
SEPARATEMode
Each stringis assigned to an own MIDI channel:
El: Basic MIDI channel
B2 : Basic MIDI channel+1
G3 : BasicMIDI channel+2
D4 : Basic MIDI channel+3
A5 : Basic MIDI channel+4
E6 : Basic MIDI channel+5
The SEPARATE Holdmode is basic MIDI channel+ 6. If your
MIDI instrument can receive dataon several channels, youshould
always use thismode. Restrictionmentionedabove in the
COMMON mode is notvalid here. The split functionscan onlybe
used in SEPARATE mode.
HOLD MODE
Hold mode (common/ separate/ sustain/ controller)
While pressing theHold Pedal youcan access fourdifferent
functions:"Common, separate, sustain and controller".
COMMON
While pressing theHold Pedal, no other MIDI data are sent.A
previouschord will be kept frozenon yourMIDI instrumentaslong

as youkeep thepedal down.Herewith,yourealizealsoa bypass
function,i.e. as long asyoupresstheHold Pedal inthismode, your
AXON
doesn't
give outfurtherMIDI data.
SEPARATE
AfurtherMIDI channelis available.You canforexampleunderlay
asolo withan optionalaccompaniment.For thatpurpose youplaya
chord whilepressingtheHold Pedal and releasingitthen. You can
play again yourAXON now andat an additionalchannelthe
already playedchord sounds. If youpress theHold Pedalagain, all
notesare turnedoff and youcan play a new chord again.
SUSTAIN
Whilepressing theHold Pedal, thecontroller64(Sustain)witha
maximum value of 127is given out.Play notes on yourguitar.
Every noteyouplay as longas youhavethePedalpressed willbe
sustained,much like the sustainpedal on a piano.Leavingthepedal
releases thesustainednotes.The same controller(64) isgivenout
again,butwiththevalue0.Allplayednoteswillsoundthen
normally.
CONTROLLER: (0...127)
It is possible to callupone of the128 MIDI controller. While
pressingtheHold Pedal,the selectedcontrolleris givenoutwiththe
maximumvalue127 (7Fh). As yourelease theHold Pedalagain,the
controllerwillbe sent out withvalue0.Appropriatecontrollersare
Sustain(64), Portamento(65) or for example Chorus(93).Inthe
appendix youcan finda detailedlistof allMIDI controllers.
TRIGGER LEV
Trigger Level (0...9)
You assign by thisparameter the weakest picking level thatcauses a
NOTE ON event to be sent.A low valuemeans thata weak picking
triggers a tone;a high value means thata strongpickingis required.
TUNE BASE
Tune Base -99...+99
Your AXON generates MIDI sounds relatingto a tunebase of 440
Hz plusa deviation whichis set bythisparameter. Ifyourmusicians
play instruments whichcan only be tunedwithgreat effort(for
example a piano),it is betterif youfityourAXON tothissituation.
We recommend thefollowingprocedure if the tunebase deviates

from440 Hz: You tunefirstthe open A stringcarefullybyearon the
basis of theinstrument(for examplea piano).Whileplayingnow
theopen A string,yourAXON analysesthe comingvibrationand
setsitself the Tune Base Parameter at thecorrect value. The
deviationin centsis shown at thedisplay.Naturally,youcanchange
the valuealso withthe +/- buttons,if youknow exactlythevalue.
Then you tune the remainingstrings of yourguitarwiththe
embedded tuningaid of yourAXON.If youplayalone,youshould
set thetunebase tothevalue0.
SENS
Sensitivity
The AXON convertsaudiosignalsintodigitalinformation.Theyare
very sensitiveto overloading.Butyou
shouldn't
driveyourAXON
too low. By usingtheSENS functionyoucanoptimallyprepare
yourguitarto playtogetherwiththeAXON. Whiledoingthis,your
AXON helps you.Duringplayon yourguitar,6 verticalbarsappear
at the display. They correspond to thestrings1 to 6 of yourguitar.
As soon asyouplayon yourguitar,those stringswithverticalbars
are indicated at thedisplayforwhichyourAXON had not foundan
optimal setting. Then you have to playtheconcerningstringagain.
Generally,itis unimportantwhetherone stringor more stringsare
picked at the same time. As soon asan optimalvalueis established
the 'display shows - - -.
You can call up thisfunctionasoftenasyoulike, perhapsinorder
to increase thesensitivitylater. For thatpurpose,yourepeatthe
above mentioned procedure, butyouplayless powerfulon your
guitar.Your AXON willthenincreasethesensitivity.Please
consider thatyoucan overload yourAXON laterby playingloudly
whichcan lead to faultyMIDI data.
VU METER
Volume Meter:OFF/ON
With this functionyou can turnon or off the optic level control. If
you switch on the level control theamplitude valueof thelast
picked stringis indicated at the display by means of thehorizontal
LED line in 3dB steps. The leftLED always lightsred andsignalizes
that you turned on the level control. A possible overload of your
AXON is indicated by a short blink ofthis LED. Additionally, the
corresponding string number appears at the display whichcaused
this overload, then the previous display is shown. You shouldnot
worry about an occasional overload. Ifoverloads oftenhappen, set
the sensitivity again (GLOBAL parameter SENS) in order to
guarantee a faultlessfunctioningofyourAXON.
