self with your new communic-
ation system so that you can
use it safely and confidently in
all traffic situations.
Notes on this rider's manual
Read this rider's manual before
starting your new BMW Motorrad
communication system. You will
find important notes here on op-
eration which will help you to
make the most of the technical
benefits of your BMW Motorrad
communication system.
Furthermore, the manual con-
tains information on maintenance
and care. This helps to ensure
operational and road safety, and
to maintain the communication
system in the best possible con-
dition.
If, in future, you decide to sell
your BMW Motorrad communica-
tion system, please remember to
include the rider's manual as well.
It is an important element of the
communication system.

Overview
This section provides an over-
view of these operating instruc-
tions as well as some general
notes on the BMW Motorrad
communication system. Before
you can use your communica-
tion system as described in sec-
tion 2, the "pairing" procedure
described in section 3 ( 24)
must be carried out. Please ob-
serve the notes on care and
maintenance of the batteries in
section 4 ( 32) as well.

BMW Motorrad
communication system
The BMW Motorrad communic-
ation system enables wireless
voice communication between
two helmet units on the basis
of the Bluetooth radio standard.
Consequently, it is also possible
to connect to other Bluetooth-
compatible devices such as mo-
bile phones, MP3 players or nav-
igation systems. The maximum
range over which devices can
reliably communicate is approx-
imately 10 metres.

The communication system has
been optimised for installation in
the following BMW helmets:
System 6 helmet
System helmet 6 EVO
System 7 Carbon
Airflow helmet
GS Carbon helmet
Different installation kits are avail-
able for the various helmets.
NOTICE
The descriptions and images in
these operating instructions re-
late to the BMW System 7 Car-
bon helmet. The functions de-
scribed also apply similarly to the
other BMW helmets.
The system is non-motorcycle-
specific and designed to be used
by rider and passenger on the
same motorcycle. Although it is
possible for the riders of two mo-
torcycles to communicate with
this system, the likelihood of vari-
ations in distance between the
two machines and the possibil-
ity of interference from external
sources mean that communica-
tion could not always be relied on
to function as it should.
Interference noise picked up by
the wind-protected boom mi-
crophone is automatically sup-
pressed, making communica-
tion from within closed helmets
possible, even at high speeds.
However, in open-faced helmets,
communication at high speeds is
only possible to a limited extent.
The microphone should always
be positioned as close to the
mouth as possible.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a short-range
wireless technology. Bluetooth
devices are short-range devices
transmitting on the licence-
free ISM waveband (Industrial,
Scientific, Medical) between
2.402 GHz and 2.480 GHz. They
can be operated anywhere in the
world without a licence being
required.
Note on wireless connec-
tions:
Although Bluetooth is designed
to establish and sustain robust
connections over short distances,
as with every other wireless
technology disruptions are
possible. Interference can affect
connections or connections can
sometimes fail. Particularly when
multiple devices operate in a
Bluetooth network, with wireless
technology of this nature it is
not possible to ensure fault-
free communications in every
situation.

Note on health
compatibility
As the evidence stands, there is
no indication that using Bluetooth
devices has a negative effect on
humans. The transmitting power
of the BMW Motorrad commu-
nication system is maximum
4 mW; the transmitting power
of a mobile phone is up to 2 W.
The ISM waveband used by
Bluetooth is designated for
worldwide use by industry,
science and medical technology
and, thanks to the low
transmitting power, is classed as
uncritical in terms of health risks.
Disposal
If you want to dispose of
your communication system
in future: it is illegal to dispose
of electrical devices as normal
domestic waste. Please bring
the communication system to
a collection point for electronic
devices for disposal.
Currency
The high safety and quality levels
of BMW accessories are ensured
by a process of continuing evol-
ution. Because of this, the ac-
cessory you have purchased may
differ from the information sup-
plied in the instructions for use.
Nor can BMW Motorrad entirely
rule out errors and omissions.
We hope you will appreciate that
no claims can be entertained on
the basis of the data, illustrations
or descriptions in this manual.

instructions for use are quoted to
the standards and comply with
the tolerance requirements of the
Deutsches Institut für Normung
e.V. (DIN). Versions for individual

Close the flip-front
helmet
Before closing a flip-front hel-
met, position the microphone
in front of your mouth to pre-
vent it getting trapped during
closing. Then close the chin
section.
Check microphone
alignment
At regular intervals, check that
the microphone is aligned cor-
rectly with your mouth.
To do so, pull the wind de-
flector 1away from the micro-
phone so that the white area 2
underneath is visible.
The white area must be facing
the mouth, the black area must
be facing away from the mouth.
If the microphone has become
twisted:
Position the goose neck along
with the microphone so that
the white area of the micro-
phone is facing your mouth.
To do so, twist the goose neck
inwards, but do not twist the
microphone against the goose
neck or the goose neck against
the bracket. If required, seek
the advice of a specialist work-
shop, preferably an authorised
BMW Motorrad dealer.
Switch on
communication system
Press and hold button 2until a
message indicates the battery
charge and the green LED 6
starts flashing.
The communication system
initialises itself; the green LED
slow-flashes,
The communication system
then goes to standby mode;

the green LED flashes as the
rate of one flash per second.
If the communication system
does not switch on:
Charge battery ( 33).
If the red LED lights up and re-
mains ON after the system is
switched on, a system error has
occurred:
Seek the advice of a specialist
workshop, preferably an author-
ised BMW Motorrad dealer.
Press and hold button 2for ten
seconds to restart the commu-
nication system.
Switch off
communication system
Press and hold button 2until
a message indicates the bat-
tery charge and the red LED 4
starts flashing.
NOTICE
If the communication system fails
for 15 minutes to find any of the
Bluetooth devices with which it is
paired, it switches off automatic-
ally to save the batteries.
The communication system
switches itself off, the red LED
flashes three times.
Press and hold button 2for ten
seconds to force the device to
switch off (e.g. in the event of
a system fault).
Adjust the volume
CAUTION
Communication system
which is set too loud
Risk of accident due to not hear-
ing other road users (particularly
special vehicles), hearing damage
Select the volume of the
communication system so
that traffic perception is not
impaired.

Requirement
This function is currently only
available with the System 7 Car-
bon helmet and can only be used
with compatible mobile phones.
Press button 1to start the
voice control service on the
paired mobile phone.
NOTICE
The voice control commands for
the mobile phone may be found
in the documentation for the spe-
cific operating system.
The voice control service on
your mobile phone prompts
you for voice control.

Connection from
helmet to helmet
Connection setup
The connection setup between
two helmets is automatic as soon
as both communication systems
are switched on.
NOTICE
Before the initial connection
setup, the participating Bluetooth
devices must be made known to
each other (pairing).
The communication between
helmets is interrupted during
phone calls or navigation an-
nouncements, this being indic-
ated by a sound signal in the
other helmet. Communication
between the two helmets is re-
stored, or music playback re-
sumed, as applicable, as soon as
the phone call or announcement
is over. The re-establishment of
the connection is indicated by a
new sound signal.
Exception: communication
between helmets is still possible
during navigation announcements
of BMW Motorrad navigation
devices.
Operation
Switch on the communication
systems of both helmets.
As soon as there is a connec-
tion between the helmets, the
green LEDs light up continu-
ously.
If no communication is possible:
Make sure that neither of the
helmets is in music mode.
Increase volume if required.
Check microphone alignment
( 12).
Briefly press button 2twice
(change to music mode) to in-
terrupt the connection between
the helmets.
Briefly press button 2twice
again to re-establish the con-
nection between the helmets.

Connection from
telephone to helmet
Connection setup
Each helmet with a communica-
tion system can be paired with a
telephone of its own, but a tele-
phone can be paired with only
one communication system.
The settings and range of func-
tions supported by the telephone
determine whether or not con-
nection setup between the com-
munication system and the tele-
phone can take place automat-
ically. Always refer to the in-
structions for use of the device
in question for details. Note that
the Bluetooth function must be
active; the communication sys-
tem might have to be authorised
or authenticated.
NOTICE
Before the initial connection
setup, the participating Bluetooth
devices must be made known to
each other (pairing).
An incoming phone call is
displayed for approximately
five seconds by a sound signal
and can be rejected within this
period. Otherwise it will be
accepted automatically. The
communication from helmet to
helmet and/or music playback is
interrupted for the duration of the
phone call.
The phone call is ended as soon
as the other party hangs up, but
can also be ended manually us-
ing the operating facility on the
helmet.
Communication between the two
helmets is restored, or music
playback resumed, as applicable,
as soon as the phone call is over.
Operation
Switch on the telephone and
the communication system of
the corresponding helmet.
Check the telephone to see if
the connection has automatic-
ally been established.
If there is no connection:
Check the settings of the tele-
phone.
NOTICE
Some Bluetooth devices do not
support automatic connection
set-up.
If required, create the connec-
tion to the communication sys-
tem manually.

Briefly press button 2to re-
ject an incoming call during the
sound signal.
Press button 2briefly to hold
the current call.
Briefly press button 2again to
resume the held call.
Press button 2for a longer
period (approx. two seconds)
to end the current call.
NOTICE
For technical reasons, a brief
period might elapse after the but-
ton is pressed before the tele-
phone actually terminates the
call.
Connection from
navigation device to
helmet
Connection setup
Each helmet with a communica-
tion system can be paired with a
navigation device of its own, but
a navigation device can be paired
with only one helmet.
The configuration settings and
range of functions supported by
the navigation device determ-
ine whether or not connection
set-up between the communic-
ation system and the device can
take place automatically. Always
refer to the instructions for use of
the device in question for details.
Note that the Bluetooth function
must be active; the communic-
ation system might have to be
authorised or authenticated.
NOTICE
Before the initial connection
setup, the participating Bluetooth
devices must be made known to
each other (pairing).
Music playback is interrupted
for navigation announcements.
When using BMW Motorrad nav-
igation devices, communication is
still possible from helmet to hel-
met, whereas this is interrupted
with other navigation devices. An
acoustic alert sounds in the pas-
senger's helmet to indicate that
communication has been inter-

rupted. Communication between
the two helmets is restored, or
music playback resumed, as
applicable, as soon as the an-
nouncement is over.
Operation
Switch on the navigation device
and the communication sys-
tem.
Check the navigation device
to see if the connection has
automatically been established.
If there is no connection:
Check settings of the naviga-
tion device.
NOTICE
Some Bluetooth devices do not
support automatic connection
set-up.
If required, create the connec-
tion to the communication sys-
tem manually.
Connection from music
playback device to
helmet
Connection
Each helmet with a communic-
ation system can be paired with
a music device of its own, but a
music device can be paired with
only one communication system.
Remember that music playback
must be in the Bluetooth profile
A2DP format.
NOTICE
A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribu-
tion Profile) is a non-proprietary
technology that enables stereo
audio signals to be transmitted
by Bluetooth to a compatible
receiver.
The settings and options sup-
ported by the music device de-
termine whether or not connec-
tion setup between the helmet
unit and music device can take
place automatically. Always refer
to the operating instructions of
the device in question for details.
Note that the Bluetooth function
must be active; the communic-
ation system might have to be
authorised or authenticated.
