BMW G 450 X User manual

The Ultimate
Riding Machine
BMW Motorrad
G 450 X
The new BMW G 450 X Sport Enduro is a unique motorcycle that completely rede²nes enduro riding. That’s because it’s been designed from the
ground up to deliver the sort of traction dreams are made of, with a brand new single-cylinder engine and a revolutionary patented swing-arm design.
After extensive testing, the G 450 X is ready, willing and able to take on the toughest competition around.
UNSTOPPABLE – THE NEW G 450 X.
Our engineers set the bar high when designing the new G 450 X,
and resolved to build a motorcycle that would meet the ver y highest
standards in off-road racing. The result is a truly revolutionary frame
design, with a swing-arm pivot point that shares its axle line with the
drive sprocket. This ensures that the length of the drive chain – and
as a result, the ef²ciency of the transmission – is not affected by the
compression and rebound of the suspension.
It also saves space, meaning there is room for a swing-arm that is
signi²cantly longer than on other bikes with a comparable wheelbase,
for maximum ground contact and traction on any surface. This design
also allows the engine to be placed further back, which means the
vehicle’s mass is now more concentrated around its centre of gravity.
By angling the engine for wards, additional space is created for long,
straight intake pipes that help the G 450 X to meet the latest emission
regulations without compromising on performance.
The motorcycle’s innovative, patented technology has been extensively
tested in competition, with experienced professional racers such as Joël
Smets, Kari Tiainen, Simo Kirssi and Andreas Lettenbichler providing
valuable feedback used to ²ne-tune its setup. This incredible motorcycle
is now available for anyone to buy, and is ready to tackle the toughest
courses the off-road world can throw at it.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
BMW G 450 X DESIGN CONCEPT
The frame of the BMW G 450 X is a completely new design. It is made
up of exceptionally thin stainless steel tubing with very few bends. The
down tubes run in a straight line directly from the swing-arm mounting to
the steering head, while the top tubes connect the steering head to the
suspension strut. This keeps down the amount of materials used, and
offers maximum strength and stiffness with minimum weight. As a result,
the motorcycle handles impeccably, is highly manoeuvrable and offers
excellent directional stability. This new layout also frees up extra space
for the radiator, which is now a single component, removing the need
for additional hoses and so further reducing overall weight. However,
what makes the chassis truly unique is the way in which the swing-arm
and drive sprocket now pivot about the same point. The swing-arm is
mounted on a steel axle that passes through the transmission output
shaft, meaning that the length of the drive chain remains constant,
whatever the suspension travel. The tension in the chain remains
constant, and the pinion, chain and chain ring wear considerably less
than in conventional systems. This coaxial swing-arm mounting also
lessens the impact of load changes on the drive train. And the swing-
arm itself can be 30 millimetres longer without extending the overall
wheelbase, meaning that better ground contact is maintained in all
situations and power is put down more effectively onto the ground.
Being unstoppable means doing things better than the rest. The design of the swing-arm is nothing short
of revolutionary: for the ²rst time ever on a production motorcycle, its pivot point shares an axle line with the
drive sprocket. As a result, the compression and rebound of the suspension do not alter the length of the
chain, and so do not impair the ef²ciency of the drive train.
It also means that the length of the swing-arm can be signi²cantly increased, without needing
to extend the wheelbase, and that the engine can be positioned further to the rear. These two
factors greatly increase traction and ground contact in off-road riding. As a further unique innovation,
the frame is made almost entirely of straight tubing, offering exceptional rigidity. All these design
innovations offer bene²ts that you’ll feel right away – and never want to be without again.
UNSTOPPABLE TRACTION.
COMES FROM REVOLUTIONARY
FRAME/SWING-ARM DESIGN.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
FRAME AND PATENTED
SWING-ARM DESIGN
The key to unstoppable performance is an unbeatable engine – an engine like the ultra-modern DOHC single-cylinder unit found
in the G 450 X. Because it is angled forwards, the air intakes are straight and long, ensuring the engine receives all the air it needs
to deliver punchy yet supremely controllable responses right across the rev range. In addition, the innovative
positioning of the clutch directly on the crankshaft minimizes the amount of torque it has to handle, and as
a result its size and weight can be signi²cantly reduced. Naturally, the unit is also fully compliant with EU3
emission regulations.
UNSTOPPABLE TRACTION.
COMES FROM AN OUTSTANDING ENGINE.
The 449-cc single-cylinder engine found in the BMW G 450 X produces
41 horsepower (30 kilowatts) at 7,000 rpm and 43 Newton-metres of
torque at 6,500 rpm. It features an EU3-compliant catalytic converter,
which is homologated for on-road use, and offers all the power you need
for an incredible riding experience. Should you wish to further increase
performance however, simply insert a small engine chip and you can
boost output to 52 horsepower (38 kilowatts) at 9,000 rpm, and torque
to 44 Newton-metres at 7,800 rpm (open version with original silencer
– not homologated for on-road use). The short-cylinder, four-stroke
DOHC engine is another BMW innovation: while the inlet valves of the
compact four-valve cylinder head are actuated via rocker arms, a bucket
tappet is employed for the outlet valve. Digital engine management
and two sequential throttle valves also further improve performance,
and ensure that the engine reacts precisely to throttle inputs. Unlike on
most motorcycles, the clutch is now mounted directly on the crankshaft
and can thus be more compact, as its increased revolutions reduce the
amount of torque it needs to transfer. Furthermore, the engine is angled
forwards, optimizing weight distribution and allowing straighter – and
therefore more ef²cient – intake pipes. The air ²lter is made of a smooth
foam ³eece and can be changed quickly and effortlessly. Finally, the
standard silencer with catalytic converter can easily be swapped for an
Akrapoviˮtitanium slip-on system for competition riding (optional, not
homologated for on-road use).
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
ENGINE
To be truly unstoppable, you need outstanding grip, which means maximum ground contact at all speeds and on
all surfaces. The front of the G 450 X features a fully adjustable Marzocchi upside-down fork with 300 millimetres of
travel, which effortlessly handles even the bumpiest terrain. At the rear is a fully adjustable Öhlins monoshock suspension system, also fully adjustable and with
320 millimetres of travel. All this sophisticated engineering has been introduced with one aim and one aim only – making you and your machine unstoppable.
UNSTOPPABLE TRACTION.
COMES FROM A SUPERB CHASSIS.
The rear wheel of the BMW G 450 X measures 18 inches in diameter
and is held in place by a robust aluminium double swing-arm. An Öhlins
suspension strut is attached to this via bolted aluminium brackets,
offering 320 millimetres of travel, and fully adjustable compression and
rebound damping. The spring preload can also be adjusted, via ring
nuts. The 21-inch front wheel features an upside-down Marzocchi fork
and 45-millimetre stanchion tubes. This too is fully adjustable for both
compression and rebound damping, and travel here is 300 millimetres.
Stopping power is provided by a Brembo brake system, with a double-
piston ³oating caliper at the front, and a single-piston ³oating caliper at
the rear. The diameter of the front brake disc is 260 millimetres, while
that at the rear measures 220 millimetres. To protect the G 450 X in the
most challenging off-road conditions, the motorcycle also features a
shatterproof lightweight plastic bash plate, which has already proven its
worth in competition riding.
TECHNICAL DETAILS:
CHASSIS
Being unstoppable means being in complete control. And that takes more than the right combination of frame,
engine and chassis. Whether you’re travelling uphill or down, sitting or standing, it is vital that you, the rider,
are always in a comfortable position. The G 450 X is an exceptionally well-balanced machine, with a slim body, and a long, ³at seat.
And to give you maximum freedom of movement, the fuel tank is located underneath the rider seat.
UNSTOPPABLE TRACTION.
COMES FROM A PERFECT RIDING POSITION.
The design of the BMW G 450 X is at once instantly recognizable as a
BMW machine and highly ergonomic. From the steering head to the back
of the seat, the bike is unusually narrow, offering the rider exceptional
freedom of movement. The fuel tank is located beneath the seat, so it
never gets in the rider’s way, and this makes a major difference when
standing (the ²ller cap is integrated into the seat). The airbox is positioned
relatively high up, underneath the front part of the seat, so it is ver y well
protected from dust and when riding through water. The single-section
seat is made of special moulded foam – there is no cover, substructure
or base, saving further weight. The motorcycle’s wide foot pegs are
extremely practical and offer excellent grip for feet due to their serrated
edges, while the double-butted aluminium Magura handlebars can
be adjusted by up to 20 millimetres, ensuring exceptional control and
comfort.

SLIP-ON RACING SILENCER (NOT
HOMOLOGATED FOR ON-ROAD USE)
Featuring the same design as the standard silencer, the racing
edition is considerably lighter than the standard component (by
one kilogram), due to the absence of the catalytic converter. It can
easily be ²tted in place of the standard silencer, and no further
modi²cations are required. ( When ²tted with the racing silencer,
the G 450 X is not homologated for on-road use)

Designed in conjunction with the experts at Akrapovic®, these
high-quality competition components improve performance and
signi²cantly reduce weight (by two kilograms compared with
standard components). Exceptionally well made, with racy
styling and a rich throaty sound, the slip-on racing silencer can
be ²tted in seconds. It is suitable for use with either the titanium
racing exhaust manifold or the standard version. (When ²tted with
the titanium racing silencer and/or the titanium racing exhaust
manifold, the G 450 X is not homologated for on-road use.)
CHAIN GUARD
The drive chain of the G 450 X is highly durable anyway, but
the chain guard extends its service life still further. It resembles
a rubber tube in form and covers the chain in its entirety,
protecting it against dirt and reducing wear and tear.
WATERPROOF RACE POCKET
(TIME CARD POCKET)
The race pocket is ideal for storing time cards during enduro
events, but can also be used for small items such as mobile
phones or cash. Its transparent front means the contents are
visible at all times.
