VR-MX
Wide Dispersion Surround Loudspeaker
The VR-MX is the best surround speaker
from Boston Acoustics. The VR-MX is
designed to be used with our VR-M mon-
itors and/or VR900 series loudspeakers,
as well as with any high quality main
loudspeaker. Its innovative shape pro-
duces a wide sound radiation pattern,
making it ideally suited for all side wall,
rear wall and ceiling locations.
What makes the VR-MX unique is its abil-
ity to act either as a direct or diffuse field
surround speaker—depending on the
surround sound effect desired. Each indi-
vidual VR-MX surround speaker employs
two speaker baffles—one with an active
woofer, and one with a passive radiator.
When the baffle with the active woofer is
pointed towards the listening area, the
speaker produces a very direct sound
with increased localization of the sur-
round effects. When the speaker is
mounted so that the passive radiator is
facing the listening area, the entire sound
field is more diffuse and the room seems
larger—more like a movie theater or con-
cert hall. Because each pair of VR-MX
speakers is designed and manufactured
as a mirror image set, reversing the effect is as sim-
ple as swapping the left and right speakers. Each
VR-MX also employs two tweeters—one on each
baffle—so that regardless of which way the speak-
ers are oriented, the high frequencies always envel-
op the listener and remain widely dispersed.
This speaker uses the same tweeter and same size
woofer as our highly acclaimed VR-M50 bookshelf
monitor, making it the perfect sonic match with
other VR-M monitors. The output of the 51⁄4"
(133mm) woofer is reinforced with a 51⁄4" passive
radiator. This combination delivers powerful low fre-
quency extension to 80Hz. The woofer/passive radi-
ator combo is coupled with two of our patented,
1"(25mm) aluminum dome VR tweeters. This
remarkable driver produces an extremely smooth,
flat response well beyond the audible range. A die-
cast aluminum heatsink attached to the tweeter's
backplate dissipates heat quickly and efficiently—
assuring cool, trouble-free operation even at very
high power levels.
Available in real cherry wood with gray grilles, black
wood veneer with black grilles, or all white, the VR-
MX maintains the unique appearance of the VR-M
family. The cabinets are as functional as they are
beautiful, featuring rigid construction and an inte-
grated bracket with hardware that can be used for
either wall or ceiling mounting. The VR-MX is
designed and man-
ufactured at our
Peabody, MA facili-
ty, using state-of-
the-art design soft-
ware, and is built
on our own propri-
etary production
lines. Like all
Boston speakers it
is built to exacting
standards, widely
re-spected as
among the indus-
try's tightest toler-
ances. The VR-M Family of Speakers

SPEAKER ORIENTATION
These labels are located on the rear of each VR-MX.
Notice that the "DIRECT" and "DIFFUSE" arrows are
pointing in opposite directions. This is because the
speakers are configured as mirror imaged pairs.
Positioning each VR-MX with the "DIFFUSE" arrow
facing the listening area will yield a larger, more
ambient surround effect. Positioning each VR-MX
with the "DIRECT" arrow facing the listening area
will yield a more focused sound with increased
localization of the surround effects. Changing from
“DIRECT”to “DIFFUSE”is as simple as swapping
the speakers from one side of the room to the other.
