APPLICATION
Use this instruction sheet when installing the above remote control kits on 2008 and newer Evinrude
E-TEC®outboards, equipped with the ICON system. DO NOT install on any other models.

For safety reasons, this kit must be installed by an
authorized Evinrude®/Johnson®dealer. This
instruction sheet is not a substitute for work
experience. Additional helpful information may be
found in other service literature.
DO NOT perform any work until you have read and
understood these instructions completely.
Torque wrench tightening specifications must
strictly be adhered to.
Should removal of any locking fastener (lock tabs,
locknuts, or patch screws) be required, always
replace with a new one.
When replacement parts are required, use
Evinrude/Johnson Genuine Parts or parts with
equivalent characteristics, including type, strength
and material. Use of substandard parts could result
in injury or product malfunction.
Always wear EYE PROTECTION AND
APPROPRIATE GLOVES when using power tools.
Unless otherwise specified, engine must be OFF
when performing this work.
Always be aware of parts that can move, such as
flywheels, propellers, etc.
Some components may be HOT. Always wait for
engine to cool down before performing work.
If you use procedures or service tools that are not
recommended in this instruction sheet, YOU
ALONE must decide if your actions might injure
people or damage the outboard.
This instruction sheet may be translated into other
languages. In the event of any discrepancy, the
English version shall prevail.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
Refer to the ICON System Quick Connection
Guide, P/N 765409 for ICON System Diagram.
Disconnect the battery cables at the battery.
Test remote control operation after installation is
complete.
Mounting Location
Select an appropriate location based on the boat
configuration.
IMPORTANT: The mounting location must be a
flat surface and must be strong enough to pro-
vide a rigid support. Strengthen mounting sur-
face as necessary. Remote control cannot be
installed if thickness of mounting surface ex-
ceeds 1.2 in. (30 mm).
Refer to ICON CONCEALED SIDE MOUNT
REMOTE CONTROL PROFILE DRAWING on
page 11.
Place remote control at proposed location and
check clearance around remote control handle at
full throttle in FORWARD and then at full throttle
in REVERSE. There must be at least 4 in. (102
mm) of clearance between the handle and any
part of the boat throughout the control handle
travel.
There must be sufficient clear space behind the
control for the housing and cable routing.
Mounting Holes
Refer to ICON CONCEALED SIDE MOUNT
REMOTE CONTROL - DRILL TEMPLATE on
page 13.
IMPORTANT: Make sure the mounting location
has all the required clearances before drilling or
cutting.
Position template. Use center punch and mark
the centers of drill locations.
Cut along the outer line of shaded area. Use
appropriate cutting tools. A 2 7/8 in.(73mm) hole
saw can be used for main through hole.
WARNING
Failure to properly install and test remote
control operation may result in remote
control malfunction and the loss of boat
control.

Notch bottom of hole for trim and tilt wiring.
Select proper fasteners and drill bit size.
Determine thickness of mounting surface.
• Less than 0.8 in. (20 mm) thickness: Drill
three (3) 9/32 in. (7 mm) diameter holes to
use 8 mm bolts and nuts and washers pro-
vided.
• 0.8 in. - 1.2 in. (20 - 30mm) thickness: Drill
three (3) 1/8 in. (3 mm) holes to use screws
provided.
Drill three holes at mounting hole locations.
Mounting Control
Position remote control behind mounting
surface. Align mounting plate with remote
control. Install four washers and screws and
tighten screws to 35 in./lbs.(4 N·m).
Align mounting plate with holes and secure to
mounting surface. Use bolts and nuts if surface
thickness is less than 0.8 in. (20mm) thick and
screws for surface thicknesses between 0.8
(20mm) and 1.2 in. (30mm) thick. Tighten screws
or bolts and nuts to 53-71 in./lbs.(6-8 N·m).
IMPORTANT: Make sure remote control as-
sembly is secure and does not move during op-
eration.
Position lock ring in mounting plate. Orient notch
for neutral lock lever UP as shown.

Route trim/tilt switch wiring. Make two (2) loops
of trim wire around lever as shown
Position remote control lever on splines of
remote control. Install retaining washer and
screws and washers to secure lever to output
shaft of remote control.
Install cover.
Mounting Control Module
Select an appropriate mounting location within
within 30 in. (76 cm) of the remote control due to
wire harness length.
The mounting location must provide:
• protection from the weather
• access for cable connections and wiring
• a flat surface which is rigid enough to prevent
control module movement
Position the control module. Mark mounting tabs
to install control module.
Select proper fasteners and drill bit size.
Determine thickness of mounting surface.
• Less than 0.8 in. (20 mm) thickness: Drill two
(2) 9/32 in. (7 mm) diameter holes to use
8 mm bolts and nuts and washers provided.
• 0.8 in. - 1.2 in. (20 - 30mm) thickness: Drill
two (2) 1/8 in. (3 mm) holes to use screws
provided.
Install control module and secure with two
screws or bolts and nuts. Tighten screws or bolts
and nuts to 53-71 in./lbs.(6-8 N·m).

ICON Network Buss Cables
ICON network buss cables use a proprietary
6-pin threaded, Molex-type connector.
IMPORTANT: Do not force connectors or lock-
ing rings. Properly aligned connectors assemble
easily.
Do not use Electrical Grease on ICON buss
cable connectors.
To assemble the connectors:
• Use the large tabs and small tabs to carefully
align buss cable connectors.
• Carefully align pins and sockets of connec-
tors. Do NOT force connectors together.
• Tighten locking rings of buss connectors fin-
ger tight. Do NOT use locking rings to force
connectors together.
Do not rotate connectors until they align. This
could result in a mismatched connection. It is
possible for each pin to enter a socket even if the
tabs are misaligned. Look at the tabs to ensure
connector alignment prior to making the
connection.

ICON Concealed Side Mount Remote Control Connections
Connect remote control buss cable to ICON hub. If the installation requires a buss cable extension,
use no more than one extension. Connect P-1 and P-2 Deutsch connectors from harness to Control
Module. Push connectors together until latched. Connect P-3 Deutsch connector from harness to P-4
Deutsch connector of remote control. Push connectors together until latched. Apply a light coat of
Electrical Grease onto the seal of the Deutsch connector for the trim and tilt switch. Push connectors
together until latched.
Check operation and movement of control lever. Make sure remote control shift and throttle functions
operate smoothly. Refer to REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION TESTS on page 9.

Control Lever Throttle Friction Adjust-
ment
Check control lever friction. When properly
adjusted, the control lever should have low
friction to allow easy movement in FORWARD
throttle range, and not allow vibration to change
throttle setting.
Remove the cover from the remote control lever.
Use a 5/32 in. (4 mm) hex tool to adjust friction
adjustment screw. Turn adjustment screw
clockwise to increase the friction or
counterclockwise to reduce the friction.
REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION TESTS
DO NOT run outboard without a
water supply to the outboard’s cooling sys-
tem. Cooling system and/or powerhead dam-
age could occur. Be sure the water intake
screens are below the water surface.
Check Start in Gear Protection
Refer to the current Evinrude ICON Concealed
Side Mount Remote Control User’s Guide or
outboard’s operator’s guide for start procedure
and remote control operation.
Start the outboard and shift into FORWARD
gear.
Turn outboard OFF while remote control is in
FORWARD.
Try to restart the outboard. Outboard should not
start.
Shift into NEUTRAL and restart outboard.
Shift into REVERSE gear. Turn outboard OFF
while remote control is in REVERSE.
Try to restart the outboard. Outboard should not
start.
Emergency Stop Test
Check emergency stop function. Push clip of
emergency stop lanyard onto master power
switch/key switch.
Start the outboard(s). Refer to ICON User’s
Guide.
With outboard(s) running, remove emergency
stop lanyard. Outboard must STOP. If outboard
does not stop, check master power/key switch
and wiring. Repair as needed.
Reinstall clip on master power/key switch.

Make certain starter will not operate when
the outboard is in gear. The start-in-gear
prevention feature is required by the
United States Coast Guard to help prevent
injuries.

On Water Test
Secure boat to dock to prevent motion. Snap the
emergency stop lanyard to a secure place on the
operators clothing or life vest – not where it might
tear away instead of activating the stop switch.
Push clip of emergency stop lanyard onto master
power switch.
Refer to the ICON User’s Guide for remote
control operation.
Position control lever in the NEUTRAL position
to start or stop outboard.
Turn master power/key switch to RUN position.
Press START symbol of START/STOP switch.
Release switch as soon as outboard starts.
Check shift operation. Check that outboard shifts
into FORWARD gear when control is shifted to
FORWARD, and shifts to REVERSE gear when
control is shifted to REVERSE.
MAINTENANCE
Check mounting of remote control. Tighten
locknuts or secure as needed.
If an abnormal condition is found, repair as
needed. Replace all damaged parts.
Check operation and movement of control
levers. Make sure remote control shift and
throttle functions operate smoothly. Refer to
REMOTE CONTROL OPERATION TESTS on
page 9.
Keep remote control clean using a cloth
dampened in fresh water.

Lanyard MUST be securely attached to
operator, and clip MUST be installed on
master power switch. DO NOT operate
outboard with clip removed from switch,
except in an emergency.

CAUTION
Inspection and maintenance must be per-
formed with outboard stopped. Discon-
nect emergency stop lanyard and
disconnect the battery cables at the bat-
tery to prevent accidental starting of out-
board.

des pièces ayant des caractéristiques
équivalentes, y compris le type, la résistance et le
matériau. L’utilisation de pièces de qualité
inférieure peut entraîner des blessures ou un
mauvais fonctionnement du produit.
Toujours porter des LUNETTES DE
PROTECTION ET DES GANTS APPROPRIÉS
pour utiliser des outils électriques.
Sauf indication contraire, le moteur doit être
ARRÊTÉ pour effectuer une telle opération.

que volants-moteurs, hélices, etc.

PROCÉDURE D'INSTALLATION
Se reporter au Guide de raccordement rapide du
système ICON, n° réf. 765409 pour un schéma
du système ICON.
Débrancher les câbles de batterie de cette
dernière.
Contrôler le fonctionnement de la commande à
distance une fois l'installation terminée.
Emplacement de montage
Choisir un emplacement approprié en fonction
de la configuration du bateau.
IMPORTANT : L'emplacement de montage doit
être une surface plate et doit être suffisamment
solide pour offrir un support rigide. Renforcer la
surface de montage selon le besoin. La com-
mande à distance ne peut pas être installée si
l'épaisseur de la surface de montage dépas-
se 30 mm (1,2").

Placer la commande à distance à l'emplacement
proposé et vérifier le dégagement autour de sa
poignée à pleins gaz en MARCHE AVANT puis
à pleins gaz en MARCHE ARRIÈRE. Il doit y
avoir un dégagement d'au moins 102 mm (4")
entre la poignée et toute partie du bateau sur
toute la course de la poignée de commande.
Il doit y avoir un dégagement suffisant derrière la
commande pour le boîtier et l'acheminement des
câbles.
Trous de montage

GABARIT DE PERÇAGE, page 13.
IMPORTANT : S'assurer que l'emplacement de
montage offre tous les dégagements nécessai-
res avant de percer ou découper.
Positionner le gabarit. Utiliser un pointeau pour
marquer le centre des emplacements à percer.
Découper le long de la ligne extérieure de la
zone ombrée. Utiliser les outils de coupe
appropriés. Une scie trépan de 73 mm (2 7/8")
peut être utilisée pour découper le trou
traversant principal.
Ménager une encoche au bas du trou pour les
câbles de correction d'assiette et relevage.
AVERTISSEMENT
Une installation et un essai de fonctionne-
ment incorrects de la commande à dis-
tance peuvent entraîner un
dysfonctionnement de celle-ci et une perte
de contrôle du bateau.

Choisir les fixations et la taille de foret correctes.
Déterminer l'épaisseur de la surface de
montage.
• Épaisseur inférieure à 20 mm (0,8") : Percer
trois trous de 7 mm (9/32") de diamètre pour
utiliser les boulons de 8 mm, écrous et rondel-
les fournis.
• Épaisseur 20-30 mm (0,8-1,2") : Percer trois
trous de 3 mm (1/8") pour utiliser les vis four-
nies.
Percer trois trous de montage aux
emplacements prévus.
Montage de la commande
Positionner la commande à distance derrière la
surface de montage. Aligner la plaque de
montage et la commande à distance. Poser
quatre rondelles et vis puis serrer les vis à
35 lb-po (4 N·m).
Aligner la plaque de montage sur les trous et la
fixer à la surface de montage. Utiliser des
boulons et des écrous si l'épaisseur de la surface
est inférieure à 20 mm (0,8") et des vis si
l'épaisseur de la surface est comprise entre 20 et
30 mm (0,8 et 1,2"). Serrer les vis ou les boulons
et les écrous à 53-71 lb-po (6-8 N·m).
IMPORTANT : S'assurer que la commande à
distance est assujettie et ne bouge pas en cours
d'utilisation.
Positionner un anneau de blocage dans la
plaque de montage. Orienter l'encoche destinée

au levier de verrouillage au point mort VERS LE
HAUT comme illustré.
Acheminer les câbles de l'interrupteur de
correction d'assiette/relevage. Former deux
boucles de câble de correction d'assiette autour
du levier comme illustré
Positionner le levier de la commande à distance
sur les cannelures de la commande. Poser une
rondelle de retenue ainsi que des vis et des
rondelles pour fixer le levier à l'arbre de sortie de
la commande à distance.
Poser le couvercle.
Montage du module de commande
Choisir en emplacement de montage approprié à
30" (76 cm) de la commande à distance en
raison de la longueur du faisceau de fils.
L'emplacement de montage doit offrir :
• une protection contre les intempéries
• un accès aux câbles et à leurs connexions
• une surface plate suffisamment rigide pour
empêcher le module de commande de bouger
Positionner le module de commande. Marquer
les languettes de montage pour installer le
module de commande.
Choisir les fixations et la taille de foret correctes.
Déterminer l'épaisseur de la surface de
montage.

deux trous de 7 mm (9/32") de diamètre pour

Installer le module de commande et le fixer au
moyen de deux vis ou boulons et écrous. Serrer
