General
Introduction
You have opted for a BRULA basic stove firebox. We would like to congratulate you
on your choice and thank you for showing confidence in our product.
With this product you are getting premium quality basic stove technology for a
healthy radiant heat and stylish heating.
We hope you enjoy using our "fiery" products.
These assembly and operating instructions serve to familiarise you with the
assembly and correct handling of this fireplace in order to ensure smooth operation.
Please take the time to read these assembly and operating instructions carefully.
Our warranty and guarantee only apply if all points for the correct assembly and
operation of the fireplace are observed as described below.
Keep the assembly and installation instructions in a safe place so you can refer to
how to operate the fireplace correctly time and time again (e.g., at the start of a new
heating period).
The basic stove principle
The basic stove (also known as a storage stove) is synonymous with long-lasting
and healthy heating. And these are precisely the advantages offered by this stove
system. Compared to a hot air system which uses the principle of convection and
essentially only heats up the air, a basic stove emits warmth into the room slowly
and evenly in the form of healthy radiant heat, something which is valued in
particular by allergy sufferers.
And this is how it works:
Once the fire has been lit in the combustion chamber, the heating gases are drawn
through a draught system made of firebricks which absorb and store the heat. The
draught system is designed so that the heating gases must firstly pass through the
entire stove before escaping through the chimney. This means that the generated
heat is emitted by the stove over a long period of time. The radiant heat created in
this way does not heat up the air but rather the objects which it encounters, just like
a ray of sun.

General requirements
Please note that national and local provisions must be satisfied when installing the
BRULA basic stove firebox.
Please consult your competent district master chimney sweep about this prior to
installation. He will advise you on the suitable chimney as well as all other
requirements which are of relevance for the setup and commissioning of your basic
stove. A sufficient combustion air supply must be ensured in particular, especially
with a very well sealed building shell, flat ventilation systems etc. in order to
guarantee smooth operation.
Your chimney sweep will be able to help here too. He will also check that the
fireplace has been connected properly. The basic stove firebox described here is
tested according to EN 13229 BlmschV (level 2) (German Federal Immission
Protection Ordinance) and may be attached to a chimney with multiple connections
provided that the chimney's technical conditions allow this. If the basic stove is
attached to a chimney with multiple connections, the heating door used must be self-
closing. This ensures that the door closes automatically after adding more fuel and
thus the supply pressure of the chimney is not affected.
Installation site / fire protection regulations
When setting up the basic stove, the valid fire protection regulations of the German
Fire Code Ordinance (FeuVo) and the specifications of the stove and air heating
construction trade (TROL) with respect to fire and heat protection must be observed.
The specified minimum distances to combustible objects and walls must be
maintained and the flooring must also be protected.
Note:
Only set up the fireplace on surfaces with a sufficient load bearing capacity. If the
load bearing capacity is not sufficient, suitable measures must be taken (e.g., plate
for load distribution) to remedy this.
Connection to the chimney
All connections from the stove to the chimney must be tight and firm. Always use a
wall lining to connect the connecting piece to the chimney.

Operation of the basic stove
The fireplace should only be operated by adults, supervise children! Only use
suitable lighting and burning materials as described in these operating instructions.
Check whether there is a good combustion air supply to ensure perfect operation of
the fireplace.
Initial commissioning
Loosen the setscrews in the holders on the inside pane. These were tightened to
secure the glass pane during transportation.
It must be possible to guide the pane up out of the holder without any great
resistance. This measure is important to avoid possible stress cracks in the pane
due to thermal loading.
All the documents, accessories, tools and other objects provided must be removed
from the firebox. Inform yourself fully as regards fuels (refer to page 9). To avoid
cracks and damage when using for the first time, all cladding elements and
components must be dry. The first burnup should be at a reduced heat, i.e., not with
the full amount of fuel as the stove must firstly get used to the development of heat.
Any smells which occur (e.g., from the firebox door) dissipate after a short time.
Heating up
Heating up takes longer than 2 minutes and requires a little patience.
Approx. 4-5 kg of small dry pieces of beech wood (2 to 6 cm in diameter with a max.
length of 33 cm) and a handful of chippings are ideal for heating up. Since the
combustion air flows via the pane ventilation into the combustion chamber, it should
be ensured that the wood is stacked loosely in the combustion chamber. The
chippings are placed from above in the middle of the pile.
This allows the combustion air to flow freely through the firewood.
The air valve is opened fully for heating up and each time more fuel is added.
To do this, turn the controller clockwise. Stick lighters, long matches or other suitable
lighters are ideal for lighting the fire in the combustion chamber. The chippings in the
middle of the wood pile aid ignition. Alternatively, firelighters made of wood wool
soaked in wax or similar can be used.
If the draught relationship between the basic stove and chimney is OK, the door can
be closed straight away.
Note: The residual moisture from the firewood will initially settle on the glass pane.
As combustion progresses, the moisture which initially collected on the glass pane
evaporates.
To optimise the draught in the chimney, the firebox/draughts and chimney must
firstly reach their operating temperature.

Operation
Once the operating temperature has been reached, the first burnup should be
completed without reducing the combustion air. Once almost all the wood has been
burnt and there is a firebed with subtle flames, it is time to add more fuel. Larger
sized pieces of firewood can now be chosen.
The amount of wood added depends on the heating requirements. The air valve
should remain fully open until the wood which has been added is properly ignited. To
prevent the basic stove from overheating, a surface temperature of max. 85°C
should be aimed for.
The combustion air can now be reduced for further operation and the speed of
combustion thus slowed down. In principle, however, the thermal output is controlled
by the amount of fuel added and the operating time. The combustion air may only be
reduced to the extent that clean combustion is ensured. If dark threads of smoke
form on the tips of the flames, the combustion air was reduced too much.
Maintaining the glowing embers
After the flames have gone out, an energy-loaded firebed remains in the combustion
chamber. It can now be decided whether the fire should be revived with thin firewood
and an open combustion air supply or if the combustion air should be reduced again
at the end of the heating phase to maintain the glowing embers for longer. The air
valve is only closed completely if the stove is heated up and the firebed has gone
out.
Ash
Wood logs and wood briquettes produce only a small amount of combustion residue.
It will therefore be necessary to remove this ash from time to time.
This should be done when the bed of ashes is more than 5 cm high. It is staggering
how long embers can remain hot in seemingly cold ash. That is why ash should
never be thrown directly from the stove in the waste bin. It is recommended to store
ash temporarily in a metal bucket with lid. Ash is also suitable for composting.

Tips
During extreme weather conditions (low pressure, fog, etc.) it is advised to keep the
combustion chamber door ajar (with locking) during heating up until the firebox /
draughts and the chimney have reached the operating temperature. The combustion
chamber door must be locked for subsequent operation. The firebox must be
monitored when the combustion chamber door is not locked in order to intervene if
necessary.
General information
• The maximum amount of fuel which can be placed in the corner firebox Type Plus
90°/R is 6 kg
• Fireboxes and ceramic reheating surfaces must have a cavity wall construction
and be gastight as per the specialist regulations (TROL).
• To prevent the door frame from being loaded down, the stove cover (cladding)
must be designed to be a self-supporting structure!
• Do not store combustible items on the stove.
• Metal items can become hot.
• Your basic stove is not a waste incineration plant and should never be used for
burning waste!
• Just like all technical appliances, your basic stove should also be checked by a
specialist at regular intervals to ensure it is functioning properly.
The fireplace must never be modified!

Safety instructions
Operate the basic stove as per these operating instructions and note the following
information on the proper handling of the firebox to ensure efficient and
environmentally friendly heating.
Caution! The stove and stove door with view pane become hot during combustion
and there is a risk of burns. Use a glove to open the stove door.
Do not place combustible objects on or in the direct vicinity of the stove. Maintain a
distance of at least 80 cm between combustible objects and the stove door.
If fireplaces are installed in living areas and the combustion air is taken from the
room where the fireplace is installed, the operator must ensure that the fireplace is
supplied with sufficient combustion air.
What to do in the event of a chimney fire
−Close the combustion air inlet and keep it closed
−Call the fire brigade and the chimney sweep!
−Enable access to the cleaning openings (e.g., cellar and attic)!
−Remove all combustible materials from the chimney!
−Before using the fireplace again, notify your chimney sweep and have the
chimney checked for damage.
−Equally, the chimney sweep should determine the cause of the chimney fire and
remedy this.

Fuels
Soft wood (spruce, poplar, fir...) has a significantly lower fuel value than hard wood
and can cause increased sooting of the firebox pane and the accumulation of soot in
the chimney.
Hard woods (beech, ash, birch,...) are best suited for use in your basic stove.
These wood types have a high fuel value and burn cleanly if stored properly in a dry
place.
Tip: Freshly cut wood should be stored for around 24 months outside in a dry place,
protected from the rain, before being used as fuel.
Use a standard fireplace lighter to light the fire.
The following must not be used for lighting and must not be burnt:
• Liquid fuels
• Moist or treated wood
• Wood chips or bark waste
• Chip boards or comparable coated and uncoated materials
• Plastics and foams
• All materials which are foreign to wood
• Paper, cardboard
• All types of waste
Your fireplace is not a "mini waste incineration plant"!
Please protect the environment and only use approved and suitable fuels!
Cleaning the firebox
When operated properly, wood in the basic stove burns leaving approx. 1-2%
residue.
When removing ashes from the firebox, it must be ensured that there are no residual
embers. Any soiling of the firebox pane can be easily removed with a special
cleaner. Only ever clean the firebox when it is cold.

Removal of the fire door
Use a screwdriver or similar tool to
remove the securing clip from the
contact side (hinge side) of the door.
Swing the door open. Then, tighten
the Allen screw on the lower hinge
with a 2 mm Allen key.
Grasp the door from below. With a
slight lifting motion, lift the door
slightly so that the lower pin of the
hinge is exposed.
In this position, pull the door down
and a little forward.
Now let the door drop a bit so that the
door can be slid and removed from
the upper track.

Corner firebox Type D plus 90°/R
All firebox stones are processed with BRULA fireproof adhesive or
dipping mortar! The wall stones of the firebox are also clamped together.
1. Remove the locking plate on the combustion air opening of the door
base!
The platform is screwed together with the stove door and can be
aligned.
2. Self-adhesive sealing tape must be applied to the chamotte joint
planes of the stove doors prior to installation.
3. The firebox must be specifically adjusted when attaching the stove
doors.
4. Insert wedges are placed in the groove of the floor stones and in the
drill hole in the field of view.
5. Use the claws provided to anchor the door frame to the stove shell.
Only materials and spare parts that have been approved by the manufacturer may be used!

Corner firebox Type D plus 90°/R
1. The supporting frame is placed on the fourth stone layer and the door
frame.
2. The horizontal clips for the top stone plate to be positioned later on
are also placed on the springs of the fourth stone layer.
3. The combustion kit for side and rear burnup is integrated in the corner
opposite the corner door.
Only materials and spare parts that have been approved by the manufacturer may be used!

Exclusion of warranty
The guarantee does not apply during the guarantee period in the
following cases:
−Wear and tear as a result of operation
−Incorrect transport and/or incorrect storage
−Incorrect handling and/or use
−Lack of maintenance
−Incorrect installation or connection of the device
−Failure to comply with assembly and operating instructions
−Technical changes to the device by third parties
−Fragile parts such as glass
This product has been manufactured in compliance with current
standards of quality control.
The materials used have been carefully selected and - like the
production process - are subject to on-going quality control. Specialist
knowledge is required when assembling and installing the product.
Therefore, the product must only be installed and started up by specialist
technical staff in compliance with current statutory provisions.

Insulation
In Germany the provisions of sections 4, 5 and 6 of the specialist
regulations of the stove and air heating construction trade (TROL) 2009,
version 2010 must be observed for installation and fire and heat
protection of basic stove fireboxes.
