Throughout this publication, “Warnings”, and “Cautions” (accompanied by one of the
International HAZARD Symbols) are used to alert the mechanic to special instructions
concerning a particular service or operation that may be hazardous if performed incorrectly

SAFETY NOTICE TO USERS OF THIS MANUAL
This manual has been written and published by the Service Department of Brunswick Bowling
and Billiards to aid the reader when servicing or installing the products described.
It is assumed that these personnel are familiar with, and have been trained in, the servicing
or installation procedures of these products, which includes the use of common mechanic’s
hand tools and any special Brunswick or recommended tools from other suppliers.
We could not possibly know of and advise the reader of all conceivable procedures by which a
service might be performed and of the possible hazards and/or results of each method. We have
not attempted any such wide evaluation. Therefore, anyone who uses a service procedure and/
or tool, which is not recommended by Brunswick, must rst completely satisfy himself that
neither his nor the product’s safety will be endangered by the service procedure selected.
All information, illustrations and specications contained in this manual are based
on the latest product information available at the time of publication.
It should be kept in mind, while working on the product, that the electrical system is capable of
violent and damaging short circuits or severe electrical shocks. When performing any work where
electrical terminals could possibly be grounded or touched by the mechanic, the power to the product
should be disconnected prior to servicing and remain disconnected until servicing is complete.

SYSTEM OVERVIEW
The Brunswick Sync scoring system consists of several pieces of equipment that can be divided into
two subsystems; the Scoring System and the Control System.
The scoring system includes the electronic assemblies located in the bowler and pinsetter areas. These
assemblies control the pinsetter, perform automatic scoring functions, provide the bowler with input
capabilities, and display information about the game in progress.
The scoring system is available with keypad or full display touchscreens and overhead screens equipped
with Display Controllers that provide a high denition (HD) scorer display. Peripheral Controller boxes
connect to lane pair components such as the pinsetters, pin cameras, Vector keypads, and automated
bumpers as needed.
For centers that are not running a Kiosk mode, the control system consists of one or more computers
located at the control desk and as needed various other locations around the bowling center. The main
function of the control system is to provide the bowling center personnel convenient control of the
scoring system and lanes from the control desk as well as point-of-sale (POS) terminals for other areas
of the center. For centers running Kiosk mode, additional control desk computers and POS equipment
are not used. Limited control functions are available through the touchscreens at the lanes.
An optional video distribution system delivers multiple high denition and/or standard denition video
channels to the overhead monitors.

GLOSSARY OF TERMS
The following terms are used in this manual. To better understand the information presented in the
manual you should familiarize yourself with these terms.
CAT5e (Category 5e) - A twisted pair cable used for carrying signals. Cat5e is an enhanced version of
Category 5 that adheres to more stringent standards. It is capable of transmitting data at speeds of up to
1000 Mbps (1 Gigabit per second). In the Sync system it is used in an Ethernet network to interconnect
the Control desk computer(s), Peripheral Controller boxes, overhead Display Controllers and the
bowler’s input consoles.
Comport - Connectors on a computer that allow it to communicate with other devices using serial
communication. These connections are also referred to as serial ports or RS-232 ports. Multiple
comports in a computer are referred to by number such as com1 or com2. Also refer to Serial
Communication.
Peripheral Controller - A box located near the pinsetter on each lane pair that provides multiple
functions for the lane pair. It is responsible for interfacing pin cameras, controlling machine functions
such as on/off and reset, and handling signals needed for scoring such as foul, sweep switch, and ball
detector signals. It can control AMF short cycle and automated bumpers as needed. It also provides
power and communication to optional Vector keypads.
Ethernet - A protocol that species how computers send information to one another in a network.
Ethernet Switch - Device that is the central point of connection that allows network devices to
communicate with each other. In the Sync scoring system multiple switches are used to connect the
Peripheral Controllers, Display Controllers, Sync consoles and the Control system computer(s). Also
refer to Cat5.
RS-232 - The most popular type of serial communication used by computers. This type of
communication allows a computer to talk to a single specic device through a 9-pin connector called a
comport. Each device that the computer “talks” to will have its own dedicated comport.
RS-485 - A type of serial communication that allows a computer to talk to multiple devices using one
“shared” comport. Also refer to Serial Communication.
Serial Communication - A popular means of transmitting data between a computer and another
device. In the Sync system two types of serial communication are used; RS-232 and RS-485. Also
refer to RS-232 and RS-485.

CONTROL DESK EQUIPMENT
The Sync control system for non-Kiosk systems consists of one or more computers and POS
assemblies located at the control desk, and in some cases, a computer in the ofce. Sync also provides
the bowling center personnel convenient control of the scoring system while keeping track of the
nancial transactions and bowling activity in the center. In addition, it allows the center additional
security control for the system, additional reporting of bowling activity, and an integrated league
record and tournament program . Refer to gures titled: Sync Conguration 1, Sync Conguration 2,
Sync Conguration 3, Sync Conguration 4 and Sync Conguration with Sync Touchpads or Vector
Keypads.
For centers running Kiosk mode, control desk computers and POS equipment are not used. Limited
control functions are available through the touchscreens at the lanes. Refer to gures titled: Sync
