Bushcraft Essentials Bushbox XXL Campfire User manual

Welcome to the Bushbox XXL
Thank you for choosing a hobo stove from Bushcraft Essentials, a
genuine German quality product. We manufacture all our stoves
exclusively in Germany using state-of-the-art processes that protect
our employees, nature and its resources. We wish you a lifetime of
enjoyment with your Bushbox!
We have designed the Bushbox XXL Campre specically for appli-
cations where weight is not an issue but a certain level of comfort is
required. Unlike our other hobo stoves, it is also suitable for hours
of continuous operation, as an outdoor heat source or simply as a
romantic vanlife campre.
Tips & Tricks
YouTube in particular is full of excellent videos from people who have
used our products, showing how to use them and giving valuable tips.
You can also nd more videos and information on our social media
pages (we also welcome your videos and testimonials).
Assembling the Bushbox XXL Campre
The Bushbox XXL Campre is very easy to set up and use:
1. Join one side panel (parts with the hooks facing up) and one back
panel (hooks facing down).
2. Attach another side panel to the other side of the back panel.
3. Slide the bottom plate and the ash plate into the slots provided
(the bottom panel [with the holes] at the top, the ash plate at the
bottom), ensuring that the side without tabs faces forwards (see
illustration).
4. Slide the remaining front section into place, ensuring that all
parts are fully engaged. Once the Bushbox XXL Campre is hea-
ted, the parts will automatically lock due to heat expansion - until
then, only lift the assembled and still cold Bushbox by the longer
(side) parts.
5. If necessary, insert the trivets (the pot supports). The Bushbox
XXL Campre is now ready for use.
Disassembling the Bushbox XXL Campre
1. Let it cool down! The Bushbox XXL Campre will remain locked
until it has cooled down.
2. Once the Bushbox XXL Campre has cooled down, the parts can
be separated.
Trivets
The trivets (pot supports) are versatile - they can be used to support
pots and pans in various positions (including parallel and across) and
can also be used to move the hot Bushbox XXL Campre without ris-
king burns. There are angled cuts in the pan supports specically for
moving (or lifting the optional grill tray).

Lighting a Fire
The Bushbox XXL Campre is multi-fuel compatible, so it can also be
used with alcohol or gas burners – but it is primarily designed for
use with wood. If you have no experience of lighting a re, there are
a number of YouTube videos on the subject. Basically: Use our Fire-
sticks, birch bark, feather sticks, ne wood shavings, a cotton pad or
similar to light the re, then add ne, thin material until the re is
really going. Then gradually add thicker material. You can nd fuel
for your Bushbox in nature; dry spruce branches are ideal. Never use
branches lying on the ground, they are almost always damp (except
in extremely dry regions).
Make sure the holes in the bottom plate are free so the stove can
“breathe”!
Operation
The underlying principle of a hobo stove is the chimney eect. Make
sure you never completely cover the top – otherwise the re will die
and/or smoke will develop.
Also make sure your stove can “breathe” from below. Keep the holes
in the base plate free and you will always have a nice re.
Finally, it is important to make sure you always have enough fuel (e.g.
wood etc.) available to keep the re burning. Our stoves burn fast
and hot, so the re will die fast if you do not add new material. Prepa-
re a sucient supply of material before you start the re.
The Bushbox XXL Campre burns to such a high temperature that
almost no ashes (or soot) will be left over. Larger amounts of ashes,
white smoke or soot are evidence of incorrect use – either because
the Bushbox XL is covered from above or has insucient air supply
from below.
Care & Maintenance
Our hobo stoves are high quality products made from stainless steel
and are designed to be with you for the rest of your life. Although
they require almost no care and maintenance, you should keep your
Bushbox XXL Campre free of dirt and clean it from time to time.
Otherwise even stainless steel may appear to rust – because of the
heat metal molecules will accumulate on the outside and oxidize.
Flash rust can appear on these spots. It will not damage the stainless
steel and can be removed easily.
Fuels
Although specially designed for use with wood, the Bushbox XXL
Campre can be used with many other fuels: Charcoal, alcohol bur-
ners, gas burners, fuel paste, dry animal dung, etc. Especially when
using gas or alcohol burners, it is also a perfect windscreen that can
dramatically increase the eciency of the burner.
Open Fire
Please use your Bushbox XXL Campre responsibly. Most forest res
and wildres are started by the irresponsible use of re. Always keep
a safe distance from ammable material and make sure you can ex-
tinguish your re at any time. Check and follow local laws regarding
having an open re. Never leave the stove unattended! Make sure
your stove is being operated on a at, reproof surface. Only use
outdoors! Never touch when in use – danger of severe burns! Keep
out of the reach of children and animals! Also never use the stove in
enclosed spaces - risk of suocation!
Trangia / Gas Cartridge Mode
(windscreen for spirit and gas burners)
If only three sides of the Bus-
hbox XXL Campre are used
and the open side is secured
with one of the trivets supplied
(see illustration), the Bushbox
XXL Campre can be used as a
perfect windscreen for gas or
alcohol burners, dramatically
increasing burner eciency.
In addition, barbecue skewers
etc. can be inserted into the
triangular openings on the si-
des, e.g. as a base for pots (see
illustration).
Warpage
The warnings about warping in our document How to Operate Your
Hobo Stove do not apply to the Bushbox XXL Campre - it is designed
to be used in continuous operation and as a campre.
Although we have taken great care and spent months of testing to
minimise warping (e.g. with the „triangular pattern“ on the sides), a
certain amount of warping cannot be avoided for physical reasons.
This is partly due to the size of the surfaces. It is therefore normal for
the Bushbox XXL Campre to warp slightly. However, it is designed in
such a way that the warping does not aect its function, but is merely
an optical eect.
The normal heat expansion of the Bushbox XXL Campre is also for
safety reasons - unlike its smallest counterpart, it does not need to
be locked as this happens automatically as soon as it is heated up.
