Quick Start Guide
RoomStar 601 Media Player & Display Controller
The RoomStar 601 unit is a fully featured solid-state media player and display controller which transforms a
traditional “in room” TV display into an interactive TV platform, delivering entertainment, TV on demand, and
travel related services as well as video, game and music apps.
The 601 unit is connected to the Hotel TV via HDMI and interconnect cables. The HDMI cable is used to display
the interactive menus and other digital content that is provided by the 601 unit. The interconnect cable passes
IR commands (received by the TV) back to the 601 unit, and it also contains a communication link that allows the
RoomStar unit to send channel change and programming commands to the TV. This allows the TV to access
‘traditional’ live channel content from the Hotel’s RF distribution system as well as the digital content provided
by the RoomStar unit.
The RoomStar 601 unit is sold to authorised resellers only as part of a RoomStar system installations. It must be
installed and configured for use by trained staff only. This document describes the installation process for the
601 unit. It must only be installed using the mains to DC power supply provided. It is assumed the hotel TV is
already installed and configured for use.
You will also need a TV interconnect cable appropriate for the hotel TV type. Samsung, LG and MTI interfaces
are available (part numbers 651, 652 and 650 respectively).

Important Safety Instructions
1. Read and keep these instructions.
2. Follow the instructions and heed all warnings.
3. Do not use this apparatus near water.
4. Clean only with a dry cloth.
5. Do not block any ventilation openings. Install in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
6. Do not install near any heat sources such as radiators, heat registers, stoves or other apparatus (including amplifiers) that
produce heat.
7. Do not defeat the safety purpose of the polarised or grounding-type plug. A polarised plug has two blades with one wider
than the other. A grounding type plug has two blades and a third grounding prong. The wide blade or the third prong is
provided for your safety. If the provided plug does not fit into your outlet, consult an electrician for replacement of the obsolete
outlet.
8. Protect the power cord from being walked on or pinched particularly at plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where
they exit from the apparatus.
9. Only use attachments/accessories specified by the manufacturer.
10. Unplug this apparatus during lightning storms or when unused for long periods of time.
11. Refer all servicing to qualified service personnel. Servicing is required when the apparatus has been damaged in any way,
such as power-supply cord or plug is damaged, liquid has been spilled or objects have fallen into the apparatus, the apparatus
has been exposed to rain or moisture, does not operate normally, or has been dropped.
WARNING: THERE ARE NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS WITHIN A RoomStar 601 UNIT.
Installation
1. When locating the 601 unit, ensure that a clearance distance of 25mm (1”) is maintained around the unit
to provide sufficient ventilation airflow. Items that could accidentally block the ventilation grills or impede
the cooling airflow must not be located near the unit.
Ensure the unit is positioned greater than 8” (20cm) away from people in normal use.
Assurez-vous que l'appareil est placé à plus de 20 cm des personnes en utilisation normale.
2. The 601 must not be installed where there is a possibility of exposure to condensation, dripping or
splashing liquids. Containers filled with fluid should not be located in the vicinity of this unit. Do not fix the
601 to any surface which is a heat source that may cause the unit to over-heat.
3. Power off the TV/Display and connect the 601 unit to the display using the HDMI cable and the
interconnect cable that is appropriate for the type of TV being used.
•Insert the HDMI cable into the TV’s HDMI 1 socket.
•The interconnect cable should be connected to the TV’s RJ11 control port, and into the 601’s USB
and 2.5mm jack plug IR input socket. If required instead, the MTI interface unit should be plugged
into a USB port on the 601 unit, with a 3.5mm/2.5mm jack cable linking the adapter to the IR input
socket. A RJ11 cable should link the MTI adapter to the TV.
•Connect the wired ethernet into the RJ45 connector on the 601 unit if it is available.
•If a RF remote control is being used, plug the RF receiver dongle into a USB port on the 601 unit.
Note: No other USB devices should be plugged into the RoomStar unit.
4. Power-on the 601 unit using the external mains-DC Power supply and switch the TV power back on. A
power-on LED on the 601 should be shown. Take the TV out of standby with the RoomStar Remote
control.

671-2001 601 Quick Start Guide_V1e.docx Page 3 of 5 Issue 1
If the TV does not come out of standby, check the interconnect cable has been properly inserted at both
ends.
If the TV comes out of standby, but there is no menu on the display, check the HDMI cable has been
correctly inserted into the TV’s HDMI 1 input.
5. Use the remote control to setup the 601 unit with WIFI or wired ethernet access to the internet (a pre-
configured USB key might be used to load pre-defined settings). For a WIFI network, the installer should
select the correct WIFI SSID and enter the network access password.
The 601 unit will then access the internet and download the appropriate hotel configuration and any new
operating software that is required. The hotel configuration for this device (specified by the serial number)
will have previously been setup using the reseller’s online configuration tool.
When the configuration and any software upgrade is complete, an on-screen prompt will be shown to
prompt the installer to enter the room number the unit is installed in.
6. Check that the correct branding and software applications have been downloaded to the unit. Use the
remote control to check that the TV can access TV channels from the Hotel’s RF distribution system, if these
are being used.
7. Put the TV and RoomStar unit into standby.
