PENALTY
OF
LEADERSHIP
I
N
everyfieldof human endeavor,
he
that is first must perpetually live
in
the
whitelight of publicity. ?Whether the leadership be vested
in a man
or
in amanufactured product, emulation and envy areever at
work. TIn art, in literature, inmusic,in industry, the reward and the
punishment are always the same. TThereward is widespread recog-
nition; the punishment, fierce denialand detraction. TWhenaman’s
work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes atarget
for the shafts of the envious few.?If his work be merely mediocre,
he
willbeleftseverelyalone
-
if heachieveamasterpiece,itwill seta million
tongues a-wagging. vealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at
theartist who produces
a
commonplace painting. VWhatsoeveryou
write,
or
paint,
or
play,
or
sing,
or
build, no one will strive tosurpass,
or
to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius.
TLong, longafter a greatwork
or
a good workhas beendone, those who
aredisappointed
or
envious continue to cry out thatit can not be done.
?Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against
our
own
Whistler
as
a mountebank, long after
the
big worldhad acclaimed him
itsgreatest artistic genius. ?Multitudes flockedto Bayreuthtoworship
atthe musical shrine of Wagner, whiIe
the
little group of those whom
he
had dethroned anddisplaced argued angrily that he
was
no musicianat
all. TThe little world continued to protest
that
hlton could never
build a steamboat, while the big worldflockedto
the
river banks to
see
his boat steam
by.
YThe leader is assailed because he is a leader, and
theeffortto equalhim ismerelyaddedproof
of
thatleadership. qFailing
to equal
or
toexcel,the followerseekstodepreciate andtodestroy
-
but
only confirms once more
the
superiority of that which
he
strives to
supplant. TThere is nothing newinthis.TItis
as
old asthe world
and asold as the humanpassions
-
envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the
desireto surpass. TAnd it
all
avails nothing. TIf theleadertruly
leads, he remains
-
the leader. TMasteppoet, masteppainter, master
workman, each in histurn is assailed,.andeach holdshis laurels through
the ages. TThat which isgood
or
great makes itself known, no matter
how loud the clamor of denial. TThat which deservesto live-lives.
