the then new General Motors
Corporation.Convenience,clean-
liness and all-weather comfort were
greatly enhanced in
1910
when Cad-
illac became the first manufacturer
toofferclosed bodies as standard
equipment.
“The Penalty of Leadership”
first appeared in the January
2,
1915
issueof The Saturday EveningPost
as anexpression of the Cadillaccom-
mitment to leadership, quality, and
innovation.
It
is widely regarded as
one of the finest documents ever
written and was published following
the introduction of the first produc-
tion
V8
engine. The
V8
was stan-
dard in all
1915
model Cadillacs.
Many Cadillac “firsts”havefol-
lowed over the years, including the
synchro-mech clashless transmis-
sion, anation-widecomprehensive

chrome plating and
the
first car to
be
designed
by
astylist
(1927

Salle/HarleyEarl).The

nessed production of the smoothand

The crisp, contemporary lines of the
1938

Special series ushered in a
new era in styling.
During World War
11,
shortly
after Pearl Harbor, Cadillac discon-
tinued car production for the first
time since
1902
in order to construct
lighttanks,combatvehiclesand
internal parts for Allison
V1710
en-
gines. Two Cadillac
V8
engines and
Hydra-Matictransmissionswere
used in each tank.

For the
1948
model,Cadillac
introducedthe
e
which set the trend in automotive
stylingfornearlytwo decades. This
was followed
by
the 1949model with
the two door hardtop CoupeDeVille
andthemodernoverheadvalve,
high
compression
V8
engine.
Engineering innovations, con-
veniences and styling dominated the
'50s
and '60s. Cruise control, auto-
maticclimatecontrol,
tilt
and
telescopingsteeringwheels,twilight
sentinel and four door hard tops all
debuted in these years.In1957 the
Eldorado Brougham featured
ad-
vances such as air suspension, mem-
ory seat,automaticelectricdoor
locks, transistor radio, a brushed
stainlesssteel roof and low profile
tires.
1953,was redesigned for 1967 as the
first front wheeldrive personal lux-
urycar. The

cu. in.
V8
engine
used
in
all Cadillacsin 1968 and
1969
was enlarged to
500
cu. in. for
all
1970 Eldorados.
An Air Cushion RestraintSys-
tem (airbag) wasavailablefor
1974,
1975 and 1976Cadillacs.
Analog Electronic Fuel Injec-
tion was available, on
1975
Cadillacs
and was standard
on
the newinter-
national size1976 Seville. In
1978,
the Trip Computer option incor-
porated an on-board microprocessor.

This rich traditioncontinues
into the
'90s
as Cadillac became the
first automobile manufacturer
to
be
awardedtheprestigiousMalcolm
Baldrige National Quality Award.
The
1992
Seville
STS
was the
firstcarevertowin
all
three major
automotive awards: Car of the Year,
Motor Trend; Ten Best List, Car
&
Driver; Car of the Year, Automobile
Magazine.

Cadillac Allantit in stock
technical configuration, was selected
as the pace car forthe 76th Indianap-
olis
500.
The demandingpace car
performance and handling require-
ments were metbecause of such
advances as the Northstar system.
The system includes the

valve,
dual overhead camshaft, Northstar

engine,

cally controlled automatic transaxle,
road sensing suspension,.speed sen-

Power Seat Control

The power seat control switchesare located on each
of
the frontdoors.
The power control switch movesthe seatforward and backward, upand
down, and adjuststhe angle
of
the seat.

Pressingthe front
switch
tilts
the front
portion of
the
seat
cushion either up
or down.
Pressingthe rear
switch
tilts
the rear
portion
of
the
seat
cushion up or

down.

Moving the centerswitch side to side moves the whole seat
up
or
down.
Move the centerswitch forward or back
to
move the whole seat
forward or rearward.
Front Seatback Recliner
To
recline the
seatback, lift the lever
on
the outerside
of
the frontseat and
move the position the
seatback
to
where
you
want
it.
Release the
lever to lock the
seatback. Pull up on
the
lever and the seat
will
move to the
full
upright position.
