RGB Primary Color Filter
For rich, vibrant color
reproduction, the
camcorder is equipped
with an RGB Primary
Color Filter, which
separates the light
passing through the
lens into individual
red, green, and blue color compo-
nents, the same color filtration used
in professional 3 CCD camcorders.
Now colors are more accurate and
true-to-life.
Optura 500 Exclusives
A Mini Video Light allows you to
shoot up to 4.9 feet away in
total darkness. It can be
switched on in any Program
mode. For shooting close-up
subjects (less than 12 inches
away), the supplied Ring Light
Adapter provides even illumination
and prevents shadows. A 2.5" high-
resolution 211,000 pixel LCD
viewscreen makes viewing comfort-
able and crystal clear. For fast and
easy transfer of full-quality digital
video to a computer, it is equipped
with a USB 2.0 Hi-speed terminal.
Windows Movie Maker2 supports
video editing through this interface.
Photographic Controls
Selectable Focusing Points for bring-
ing off-center subjects into sharp
focus. Continuous Shooting Mode
enables rapid fire shooting — up to
3 frames-per-second (1632 x 1224)
or up to 5 frames-per-second (1280 x
960, 640 x 480). Simultaneous
Photo Recording lets you capture
e-mail ready digital photos (640 x
480) while you record video. With the
press of one button, Auto Exposure
Bracketing lets you shoot three
photos — normal, underexposed
and overexposed. The Built-in flash
with Red-Eye Reduction is perfect for
taking photos at night, indoors, or
filling in shadows.
Program Auto Exposure
Most of the time,
the Automode is
all you need. But
for complex situ-
ations, the Canon
Optura 500/
Optura 400 has pre-programmed
auto exposure modes — Sport,
Portrait, Spotlight, Sand & Snow and
Lowlight — that let you shoot like
pro. Need more help in dark situa-
tions? The Night Mode selects the
ideal shutter speed and sensitivity
combination to brighten up the scene
without sacrificing color. Super Night
Mode/Night Plus uses a built-in LED
light to provide extra illumination.
Use as a Webcam
Transform your
camcorder into
a webcam! With
DV Messenger2
software you can
conduct an Internet
Video Chat with Microsoft Windows
Messenger through IEEE1394 or
USB. Control the focus and zoom of
your camcorder or the person you
are chatting with — right from your
computer. You can also transfer
photos and access video playback
on either camcorder. And with the
camcorder’s NETWORK mode, you
can access your camcorder at home
from a remote location.
Manual Audio Control
For complete con-
trol, the camcorder
offers manual
audio adjustment.
The audio level can be monitored in
the viewfinder or LCD viewscreen.
The secret to the Optura 500/Optura 400’s outstanding video
and photo performance is Canon’s exclusive ≥DV Image
Processor. Since video and digital photos have unique color
requirements, ≥DV utilizes
two different processing color tech-
niques to maximize video quality
on a TV and still image quality
for print or computer display.
Print & Share makes it easy to print or download
photos right from the Optura 500/Optura 400, with
just a single touch of a button. Simply connect the camcorder
to a Canon CP Series Printer, a Canon Bubble Jet Direct Photo
Printer, or any PictBridge compliant printer. Or connect your
camcorder to your computer and with a single
press you can share photos with
friends and family.
The robust 2.2 Megapixel CCD Image Sensor delivers superior
performance and images with stunning quality. Enjoy
video with finer detail and resolution or print and
share great photos with pride. Photos are recorded to
an SD Memory Card at 1632 x 1224 pixels.
DV Photo Plus unleashes the full
digital imaging power of your Canon camcorder,
promising a superior level of clarity, color, and
excellence to video and photos.

precision lenses for photography and broadcast TV lenses goes into

in MPEG-4 (Optura 500) or

format to an SD Memory Card.
These mini-moviesare ideal for
attaching to an e-mail or posting on
the web. When using an SD Memory
Card, you can record video for the full
length of the card.
Portrait
High Resolution 16:9 Mode
To match today’s popular widescreen
TVs, the Optura 500/400 can record
high resolution 16:9 video. Unlike
systems which only record a vertically
stretched picture, these camcorders
use the full width of the CCD, filling
the entire screen with crisp, high-
quality images. Create a theater-like
experience in your own living room.
