Introduction
Cansec’s Via Universal Wireless Lock brings the benefits of wireless to virtually any access control
system. Unlike other wireless locks, it can be configured in under 5 minutes and does not require
a PDA, tablet or smart phone to initialize it. A few simple DIP switch settings and you are done.
The Via Lock operates with 125 kHz HID and AWID cards and supports all Wiegand formats up
to 64 bits. Locks communicate wirelessly to a Via Hub which can be located up to 70/170 ft (21/52
m) away in a typical office environment. Each Hub can support two Via Locks.
Three status LEDs on the reader make troubleshooting simple. The lock is powered by 4 AA batter-
ies which will last 1 to 2 years in a typical application (depending on setup).
Wiegand data is sent wirelessly to the Via Hub, which in turn sends the data to a Wiegand reader
port on the associated access control panel for verification. If the lock relay operates, indicating that
access is granted, the Hub will send a wireless unlock command to the reader at which the card was
presented.
The high quality ANSI Grade 1 cylindrical lockset is suitable for use on interior or exterior wood
or hollow metal doors from 1 3∕8” to 2” in thickness (35-51 mm).

Switch C1 is used to indicate whether or not a door contact is connected. When set to ON (to the
RIGHT), the door contact input will be bypassed. This is the default setting. When it is OFF (to the
LEFT), the control unit expects to see a door contact connected. It is highly recommended that the
supplied door contact be installed as it allow for the detection of Forced Entry. The bottom switch

DIP SWITCH “D” - OPTIONS
The Via Lock is designed to wake up periodically and connect to its assigned Via Hub. This allows
the Lock to check on the status of the Lock Relay on the access control panel with which is it associ-
ated. The Lock can then determine if the access control panel has performed a maintained unlock,
which will occur if the operator manually invoked it or it was automatically invoked due to a sched-
ule on the access control panel. When the Via Lock senses that the Lock Relay on the access control
panel has been activated for eight (8) seconds, the Via Lock will go into Unlock Maintained mode
and will stay in that mode until the Lock Relay on the access control panel is deactivated.
NOTE: If the Via Lock is in Unlock Maintained Mode and communication with the Hub is lost,
the door will be automatically re-locked.
The Periodic Wake Up interval default is set to 4 1∕2minutes but can be set to 30 seconds via a DIP
switch in order to provide a faster response to an Unlock Maintained state on the access control
panel. Periodic Wake Up can also be DISABLED which will increase battery life. This can be used
where the connected Access Control panel will not be invoking Unlock Maintained commands.
Switch D1 is used to enable/disable Scheduled Wake-Up mode.
POWER LEVEL SETTING STRATEGY
By default, the power levels for the Via Lock and Via Hub are set to LOW. This provides a range of
approx. 70’ range in a typical office environment. When the power level of the Via Lock and Hub
are BOTH set to HIGH, this range is extended to approx. 170’.
If a reader connects and communicates reliably, the power setting should be left at LOW on both
the Via Lock and the Hub as it will extend the battery life on the Via Lock.
If either Via Lock is set to HIGH power, the associated Hub must also be set to HIGH power. When
a Via Lock and Hub are set to HIGH power to accommodate a distance in excess of 70’, a second
reader located at 70’ or less can still be left on LOW power.
Acceptable power combinations are shown as
the right form.

Slide switch D1 to UP (OFF) to enable Scheduled Wake-Up mode (default).
Slide switch D1 to DOWN (ON) disabled Scheduled Wake-Up mode.
If switch D1 is UP (OFF), Scheduled Wake-Up Mode is actived. Switch D2 will then
define the Wake-Up interval.
Slide switch D2 to UP (OFF) to set Wake-Up Interval to 4 1∕2minutes (default).
Slide switch D2 to DOWN (ON) to set Wake-Up Interval to 30 seconds.
Slide switch D3 to UP (OFF) to set power level LOW (default) - 70 ft (21 m) range.

READER STATUS LEDS
The Via Lock reader is equipped with three status LEDs. These LEDs make it very simple to com-
mission the systems and monitor its ongoing operation. When a card is presented:
1. Connect the following cables to the Control Unit (see Figure 4 for location).
• LED Cable and Reader Cable from the Via Reader
• Lock Motor Cable and the REX Cable from the Lockset
• Door Contact Cable from the Door Contact (optional)
2. Snap 4 AA batteries in the battery holder to power up the Control Unit (see Figure 4).
3. Press the Reset button.
• The RED LED will flash ONCE to confirm that the card was read.
• The GREEN LED will flash ONCE to confirm that the Wiegand
data has been sent to the Via Hub.
• The YELLOW LED may flash ONCE to indicate that the transac-
tion was successfully received by the Hub but the signal level is weak.
This could be caused by the introduction of a physical obstruction
which was not present the the Via Lock was initially installed.
• The YELLOW LED may flash TWICE if the battery level is low.
• The YELLOW LED may flash THREE times if the signal level is
weak AND the battery level is low.
• If access is granted, the Lock will beep ONCE and the GREEN LED
will come on momentarily.
• If access is denied, the RED LED will flash TWICE.
• If the battery level is so low that the card data cannot be sent to the
Hub, the RED and YELLOW LEDs will come on momentarily when
a card is presented.

DIP SWITCH “E” - PROGRAM MODE
This is the large RED switch and is used to put the board into PROGRAM or RUN mode. When-
ever ANY of the programming DIP switches are changed, the PROGRAM DIP switch must be set
to PROGRAM (UP/ON) and the reset pushbutton to its immediate right must be momentarily
pressed. This loads the defined program values into memory and verifies them. When the PRO-
GRAM function is completed, the Via control unit will beep and will continue to beep until the
DIP switch is returned to the RUN position (DOWN/OFF) and the reset switch is pressed again.
The Via Lock will then attempt to connect to it’s assigned Via Hub. You can verify that it is con-
nected by operating the inside lever. If the event is detected and successfully transmitted to the
Hub, the blue Connection Status LED in the top left corner of the controller board will blink once.
