Common use and proper loading
practice
The Christiania bike is designed for riding on roads, bike
paths and in recreational areas. Try to avoid roads with
heavy traffic, be careful when riding downhill, and avoid
riding up or down curbs and the like.
The Christiania bike should not be used for fast riding.
Make sure you manage the steering at all times and
remember to apply the parking brake when parked. When
you get on the bike, do not release the parking brake until
you are fully settled on your seat.
Never get up off the saddle whilst riding; ride carefully
and perpendicularly up and down ramps. Adjust speed
ahead of curves - the sharper the curve, the lower the
speed. As you use your cargo bike, you will get used to
the fact that the use of your body weight has an impact
on the riding characteristics. Do not roll backwards sitting
on the cargo bike as the foot brake may block.
Children must be securely strapped in whilst riding and
must use the provided seating.
With cargo, do not exceed both the maximum cargo
weight within the cargo box nor the maximum total weight,
including that of the rider. The load capacity can be seen
in the technical data table on page 18.
The bike must always be loaded properly. The best riding
experience and maneuverability are achieved by loading
the heavier items in the middle of the cargo box. It takes
some experience to cycle with large or heavy loads.
Maintenance and inspection
• Wash the bike regularly to eliminate road salt or other
chemicals.
• If the bike has suffered any crashes, collisions, over-
loads or the like, inspect the frame for damage.
• Regularly check that all bolts are securely tightened.
Wheels and tires
• Make sure the tires are inflated properly. Most tires have
recommended pressure printed on the side.
• The spokes must be checked and tightened after three
months and then annually.
• There should be no play in the wheels.
• Rims should be protected with wax or acid-free oil.
Gear and chain
• Chain, cables and other moving parts must be lubrica-
ted and adjusted at least twice a year.
• Gear unit must always be properly adjusted to minimise
wear and damage.
• Remember to regularly clean and lubricate external gears.

• If the bike is internally geared change gears without
pedalling.
• If the bike is externally geared change gears when pedalling.
Brakes
• All cables must be inspected at least once a year for
signs of breakage or other wear.
• Regularly check that the brakes are fully functional and
properly adjusted.
• When replacing the brake pads, always use original parts.
• If the bicycle has hydraulic brakes, the pressure in the
braking system must be kept steady. Deactivate the
parking brake during long-term storage of the bike.
• Never lubricate brake discs, calipers and brake pads.
These parts work on friction, and lubricants will hamper
their effectiveness.
Frame, steering and the cargo box
• Never exceed the maximum level marked on the seat post.
• There must be no play in the crank or guide bearings.
This is to be checked at least once a year.
• Damage to the surface treatment of the frame or car-
go-box should be repaired as soon as possible.
• The frame should be protected with wax or acid-free oil
twice a year.
• The cargo box can be polished with vegetable oil. If
instead lacquered (e.g. in a color), the lacquered sides
of the cargo box can be polished with a wax product
suitable for cars.
Technical data
• Pipes and profiles are made of 1-3 mm steel or alumi-
nium, according to applicable ISO and DIN standards.
• The aluminium frame is powder coated; steel compo-
nents are anodised.
• The cargo box is mounted in angular profiles and consists
of 9mm FSC-approved birch veneer of the highest quality.
• The steering is constructed with tapered bearings.
• A hydraulic damper ensures stability whilst riding.
• The rims are made of aluminium.
• The hubs are made of strong aluminium alloy with gro-
ove ball bearings.
• The mudguards are made of stainless steel.
• Brakes and brake levers are of high quality with built-in
parking brake.
• Bolts, nuts and rivets are made of aluminium or stainless
steel.
