Maintenance and lubrication service recommenda-
tions forthe1965 Chrysler Corporation-built vehi-
cles have been compiled to, provide maximum protec-
tionforthecar owner's investment against all rea-
sonable types ofdriving conditions.
Since these conditions vary withthe individual car
owner's driving habits, the area in which thecaris
operated andthe type of service to which thecaris
subjected, itis necessary to prescribe lubrication and
maintenance service ona time frequency aswellas
mileage interval basis.
To assure thecar owner the benefits to which heis
entitled, the mileage intervals and time frequencies
at which the various lubrication and maintenance serv-
ices should be performed are clearly defined and
carefully outlined in Certified Car Care Maintenance
Services.
Information concerning the types of lubricants
specified, the quantities required andthe location of
the various points of application are shown inLu-
brication and Maintenance Charts (Figs. 1 and2).Lu-

HOISTING
Special care shouldbetakenwhenraisingthevehi-
cleona framecontacttypehoist.Thehoistmustbe
equipped with theproper adapters inorderthatthe
vehicle will besupportedinthecorrect locations(Figs.
3 and4).
Conventionalhydraulic hoists maybe used afterde-
termining thatthe adapter plates will make firm con-
tact with thelowercontrol arms andthe rear axle
housing.
A regular floor jackmaybe used under the rear axle
housing,or under thefront suspension lowercontrol
arms, however, a floor jack must never be used onany
parts ofthe underbody.
CAUTION: Donotattemptto raise oneentire side
of the vehicle by placing a jack midwaybetween
front and rear wheels. This practice may result in
permanent damage tothe body.
The bumpers are designed to accept a bumperjack
in an emergency, ifit becomes necessary to change a
tire ontheroad. Notches areprovidedinthebump-
ersforthe purpose ofraisingthevehicle with the
bumperjack.
CLASSIFICATION-OF LUBRICANTS
Oils andlubricantsareclassifiedand graded accord-
ing to standards recommended bytheSocietyofAuto-
motive Engineers (SAE),theAmericanPetroleum
Institute(API)andtheNationalLubricating Grease
Institute (NLGI).
Engine Oil
TheSAE grade numberindicatestheviscosityof
engine oils,forexampleSAE30,whichisa single
grade oil. Engineoilsare also identifiedbya dualnum-
ber,forexampleSAE10W-30,whichindicatesa mul-
tigradeoil.
TheAPIdesignationindicatestheclassificationof
engine oilsforuse under certainoperatingcondi-
tions.Only engine oils designated "ForServiceMS"
shouldbe used. These oilscontainsufficientchemi-
caladditivestoprovidemaximum engine protection.
Both theSAE grade andtheAPIdesignationmustbe
found onthecontainer.
Gear Lubricants
TheSAE grade number also indicatestheviscosity
of Multi-Purpose Gear Lubricants,definedby MIL-L-
2105B.AnexampleisSAE75,whichisa light viscosity
lubricant.
Lubricants—Greases
Semi-solid grease lubricants, such asspecifiedfor
propellershaftuniversaljoints, bear the NLGI des-
ignation. Theyarefurtherclassifiedas grades "0"or

CHASSIS LUBRICATION
Fmnf Suspension Ball Joints
Thefront suspension balljoints(Fig.5)aresemi-
permanentlylubricated with speciallubricantatthe
factory.Theyshouldbeinspected,asoutlinedinthe
Car Care Schedule, for damage tothe seals whichmay
resultin loss oflubricant.Cleanaccumulated dirt and
lubricant from theoutside surface ofthe seals to per-
mit thoroughinspection.Damaged seals shouldbe
replacedimmediatelytopreventcontaminationofthe
lubricantor damage tothe parts. Lubricateballjoints,
if necessary.
Whenlubricatingballjoints,useMulti-MileageLu-
bricant, Part Number2525035. Remove the threaded
plug from each ball joint and temporarily install lubri-
cation fittings. Avoid theuseof high pressure equip-
ment to prevent damaging orrupturingthe seals.
Stop filling theballjointswhenthelubricant begins
to flow freely from thebleed areas atthe base ofthe
seal, orifthe seal begins toballoon. Remove the fit-
tingsandreinstallthe threaded plugs.
Steering Linkage Ball Joints
Thefourtierodendballjointsandthesteering
gear armball joint (Fig.6)aresemi-permanently
lubricated with a speciallubricantatthefactory.
Theyshouldbeinspectedandlubricatedinaccord-
ance with theCertifiedCar Care Schedule.
Wheninspectingballjoints,cleanaccumulated dirt
andlubricant from theoutside surfaces ofthe seals to

Inject lubricant until it flows freely from theseal

On these models,the control mechanismislo-
catedonthedashpanelinthe passenger compart-
ment.
If thebootisdamaged,itshouldbereplacedand
themechanismlubricatedbyapplyinga film of Multi-
Mileage Lubricant,PartNumber2525035,or Automo-
tive Multi-Purpose Grease, NLGI Grade2 (Fig. 9).

Transmission Fluid,AQ-ATF, Suffix "A," Part Num-
ber1843314,forallambient temperatures. Inwarm
weather, however,Multi-Purpose Gear LubricantSAE
90,asdefinedby MIL-L-2105B, maybe used.
It isnot necessary to change thelubricantwhenthe
caris used innormalservice.Wherethecaris used
for towingtrailersorotherthannormal passenger
service,refertotheCertifiedCar Care Schedule for
recommended servicing.

Drive linecomponentson passenger cars used to

PROPELLER SHAFT AND UNIVERSAL JOINTS
Universal jointsshouldbeinspectedforexternal
leaks or damage, in accordance with theCertifiedCar
Care Schedule.Thejointsshouldnotbedisassembled
orrelubricated unless external leaks or damage has
occurred.

If necessary toadd,useMulti-Purpose Gear Lubri-
cant, asdefinedby MIL-L-2105B. Hypoid Lubricant,

NOTE: Drive line componentsof passenger cars
usedto pull trailersorengagedin similar heavy
duty usage will requiremorefrequentinspection
andservicethan those usedinnormal passenger
carservice. Follow recommendations outlined inthe
CarCareSchedule.
FRONT WHEEL BEARINGS
When aninspectionofthewheelbearingsindicates
thelubricantislowinquantity,orcontaminated with
dirt orwatertoproducea milky appearance, the bear-
ingsshouldbecleaned,inspectedandrelubricatedif
serviceable.
CAUTION: To avoid possiblecontaminationofthe
lubricant by mixing lubricantsthatarenotcompat-
ible, donotaddlubricanttothebearings.
Thoroughly cleantheoldlubricant from the bear-
ingsandhubs.Repackthebearingsandhubs with
Automotive Multi-Purpose Grease, NLGI grade2.
When repackinghubs,make sure allsurfacesofthe
hubandouter grease cupinteriorsarecovered with
grease (Fig.18)to minimize condensationand grease
travel outofthebearing.DoNot overfill.
Adjust thebearingsas follows:
(1) Tightenthewheelbearingadjustingnut(Fig.
19) to90inch-pounds while rotatingthewheel.
(2) Positionthenut lock ontheadjustingnutso
onepairofcotterpinslots align with theholeinthe
spindle (Fig.19).
(3) Backofftheadjustingnutandnut lock tothe
next slotand install thecotterpin.

TIRES
Tires, including the spare, shouldberotatedac-
cording tothe tire rotationdiagram(Fig.20)topro-
vide uniform wear, long tire life, andtoretaincom-
fortable riding qualities.
Tires shouldbeexaminedforunusualwearpatterns,
foreign materialandproper inflation pressures. Unus-
ual wearconditionsmayreflectunusual driving habits
or indicatethatmechanicalcorrectionsmaybenec-
essary.

COOLING SYSTEM
Inspectthecoolant level everytwomonths.The
cooling systemshouldbedrained,flushed and refilled
with thepropercoolantoncea year.When necessary
to removeaccumulationsofrustandotherdeposits,
maximum cleanlinesscanberestoredbyusing a reli-
able cooling systemcleaner,accordingtothedirec-
tions onthecontainer.
Drain the cooling systembyremovingbothdrain
plugsinthe sides ofthecylinderblockandopenthe
drain cockinthelowerradiatortank. Discardoldsolu-
tions.
Refill the cooling system with waterandprotect
againstcorrosionbyadding Cooling SystemRustRe-
sistor,PartNumber2421778,or refill with waterand
PermanentTypeAnti-Freeze,PartNumber1316209,
dependinguponthe season. All modelsareequipped
with 180 degree thermostats. With thisthermostat,
only permanenttype anti-freezeshouldbeused.Ifan
alcohol-type anti-freezeisused,a 160 degree thermo-
statshouldbeinstalled.
CAUTION: The180 degree thermostat must be used
on cars equipped with air conditioning.
All cars equipped with air conditioning shouldhave
the cooling systemprotected with permanenttype
anti-freezetoa temperatureof —15°F. toprevent
freezing inthe heater core.
In thewinter,the cooling systemofall cars
equipped with air conditioning, shouldhave suffi-
cient anti-freezetoprovideprotectiontothelowest
anticipated temperaturerange.
ENGINE OIL—SELECTION OF
For best performance,andtoprovideformaximum
protection ofallenginesforalltypesofopera-
tion, only those lubricantsshouldbeselected which:
(a) ConformtotherequirementsoftheAPIclassi-
fication "FOR SERVICE MS."
(b) HavetheproperSAEgradenumberfortheex-
pectedtemperaturerange.

maybesafelyusedasrecommended.Asstatedinthe
accompanyingchart,when minimum temperaturesare
expectedtobeconsistentlybelow +10°F., oils ofthe
SAE 5W-20 viscosity maybeused.
In ordertohelpdeterminewhetheryourregion
"consistently reaches minimum temperaturesof
+ 10°F.," theaccompanyingweathermap(Fig.21)is
provided. Ifyourregionisintheshaded area, SAE
5W-20 oil shouldbeused during thewintermonths.
Lubricants which donothavebothanSAEgrade
numberandanMSServiceclassificationonthecon-
tainer shouldnot beused.
FREQUENCY OFOIL CHANGES
Theengineoilshouldbechangedeverythree(3)
months,or4,000 miles, whichevercomes first.
Severe Operating Conditions
Severe operatingconditions,suchasfrequent driv-
ing ondustyroads,orinsandygeographic areas, or
unusually short trip driving in cold weathermayrea-
sonablyrequireoil changes morefrequentlythanev-
ery threemonths.Under these conditions,consultand
follow theadviceofanyChryslerMotorsCorporation
Authorized Dealer'sServiceManager.
Taxi and Police Duty
Severe servicesuchas taxi and city police driving,
which are principally short trip operations including
frequentandprolonged idling, requiremorefrequent
oil changes ona regularschedule.Forthisservice,it
is recommendedthatengineoilbechangedatleast
every2,000miles, with filter changes atleastevery
2nd oilchange.Inaddition,forthistypeofservice,
thecrankcase ventilation systemshouldbeserviced
ateachoilchange.A suggestedpracticefor taxi and

police operationsistomaintain spare valves, install-
ing a cleanvalveat each oil change. Valvessore-
movedcanbecleanedbysoakingovernightincarbu-
retor cleaner, followed bydrying with compressed
air.
During Break-In
Cars shouldbedrivenmoderatelyduringthe first
300miles. After the initial 50miles, speeds upto
50to60mpharedesirable. While cruising, brief full-
throttle accelerationscontributetoa goodbreak-in.
Wide-openthrottleaccelerationsinlow gear canbe
detrimentalandshouldbeavoidedforat least 500
miles.
Theoilinstalledintheengineatthefactoryisa
high qualitylubricant,classified"ForServiceMS,"
and should be retained until the first regularly sched-
uled three-monthor4,000mileoil change, whichever
comes first. Ifit becomes necessary toaddoilduring
this initial period,anoil with the"ForServiceMS"
classification andoftheproperviscosity grade should
be used. Nondetergent or straight mineral oils must
never be used.
Frequently,a newengine will consume some oil
during its first fewthousandmilesofoperation.This
shouldbeconsideredasa normalpartofthebreak-in
andnottobeinterpretedasanindicationof diffi-
culty.
ENGINE OIL FILTER
All engines areequipped with full-flow, throw-away
oil filters (Fig.22)toprovideefficient filtering ofthe
engine oil formaximumengineprotection.
The filter shouldbereplacedeverysecondoil
change. Since filters vary widely inquality,whenre-
placing the filter itisrecommendedthata Chrysler
Corporation EngineOilFilterbeinstalledto assure
mostefficientservice.

CRANKCASE VENTILATION SYSTEM
Periodicserviceofthepositive crankcase ventila-
tion system(Fig.23)isrequiredtopreventmalfunc-
tion ofthesystem because ofcombustionproducts
depositedinthe valve, hose andcarburetor passages.
Standard Ventilation System
Theventilationsystemshouldbeinspectedand
servicedat least everysixmonthsandtheventilator
valve replacedevery year, preferablytocoincide with
theannualengineperformanceevaluation.Thecarbu-
retorair cleaner elementshouldbereplacedevery
two years.
This service will berequiredmorefrequentlyifthe
vehicle is used extensivelyforshort-trip driving less
than10miles with frequent idling, suchasin city
traffic.
Service Procedure
With theengine idling, removetheventilatorvalve
andcapassembly from therockercover(Fig.23).If
thevalveis working freely,a hissingnoise will usually
beheardasair passes throughthevalve,anda strong
vacuumshouldbe felt whena finger isplacedover
thevalveinlet.
If thevalveis working properly,reinstalltheven-
tilator valveandcapassemblyandremovethe oil filler
pipe breather cap. With theengine still idling, loose-
ly hold a pieceof stiff paper ora parts tagoverthe
oil filler pipe. After allowing a few seconds forcrank-
case pressure toreduce,the paper shouldbedrawn
againstthe filler pipe with a noticeableforce.Ifthis
occurs,a final checkshouldbe made tobecertainthe
valve shuttleisfree.Shutofftheengine,removethe
