Introduction
Thank
you
for
selecting
the
8533-45
miniprinter
from
Cole-Parmer.
This
is
a
compact,
high-performance
printer
designed
to
be
used
in
conjunction
with
Cole-Parmer's
8533-40
(Type
J)
or
8533-42
(Type
K)
thermocouple
thermometer.
Three
printing
modes
are
featured:
1)
Auto-Interval
Print
Mode
prints
elapsed
time
and
temperature
automatically
at
selected
intervals.
2)
Number
Print
Mode
serially
prints
the
reading
number
and
temperature
on
manual
command.
3)
Auto-Alarm
Print
Mode
prints
lap
time
and
temperature
when
the
reading
is
outside
of
the
Alarm
Set
range.
The
dot
matrix
LCD
displays
instructions
during
use
of
the
instrument
to
make
operation
simple.
The
instrument
comes
with
printer
paper,
four
AA
1.5
V
batteries,
and
a
rugged
carrying
case
which
will
hold
the
miniprinter
and
one
of
the
above
thermocouple
thermometers.

Operating
Instructions
This
section
describes
the
display
and
function
keys
of
your
8533-45
miniprinter.
Please
take
the
time
to
read
this
manual
carefully
so
that
you
can
take
advantage
of
the
wide
variety
of
recording
functions
the
instrument
offers.
1.
Battery
Installation
The
8533-45
operates
on
four
1.5V
batteries.
To
install
the
batteries,
remove
the
battery
compartment
cover
on
the
back
of
the
instrument.
Once
the
batteries
are
installed,
you
can
expect
a
typical
operating
life
of
up
to
50
hours
with
alkaline
batteries
at
1
-hour
print
intervals.
NOTE:
1)
The
instrument
will
not
operate
on
the
internal
batteries
when
it
is
connected
to
the
optional
AC
power
adapter.
2)
Remove
the
batteries
to
avoid
damage
to
the
instrument
caused
by
battery
leakage
and
corrosion
when
the
instrument
will
not
be
used
for
a
long
period
of
time
or
will
be
operated
extensively
on
other
power
sources.
2.
Battery
Level
Indicator
When
the
battery
has
exhausted
about
80%
of
its
useful
life
the
BATTERY
indicator
will
appear
on
the
display.
This
indication
may
last
for
only
a
few
seconds,
immediately
after
printing
or
operating
the
paper
feed.
If
the
batteries
are
completely
exhausted,
no
indicator
will
be
displayed.
Replace
the
batteries
as
soon
as
possible.
3.
Alternate
Power
Source
House
Current
—
use
the
optional
AC
power
adapter
8533-47
(115V)
or
8533-48
(220V).
Connect
the
adapter
to
the
6
VDC
jack
on
the
right
side
of
the
instrument
and
plug
the
adapter
into
the
outlet.

4.
Paper
Installation
a)
Open
the
paper
compartment
by
gently
pushing
back
the
cover.
b)
Turn
on
the
power
switch.
c)
Remove
the
end
tape
on
the
supplied
chart
paper
and
feed
the
leading
edge
of
the
chart
paper
into
the
take-up
slot.
The
face
side
of
the
paper
should
be
facing
downwards.
d)
Press
the
feed
key
to
advance
several
centimeters
of
the
paper
out
of
the
slot.
Close
the
paper
compartment
cover.
5.
Interface
Connection
The
8533-45
miniprinter
has
a
connector
for
a
direct
interface
with
an
8533-series
thermocouple
thermometer.
Turn
off
both
power
switches
and
plug
the
miniprinter
into
the
right
side
of
the
thermometer.
6.
Power
On
Turn
the
power
switch
ON.
The
instrument
wili
advance
the
paper
and
the
display
will
read
"M-SELECT".
The
instrument
is
now
in
the
command
request
mode,
and
will
respond
to
the
key
operations
described
on
pages
7
and
8.
M-SELECT
NOTE:
If
the
instrument
is
turned
off
and
immediately
turned
back
on,
a
random
series
of
LCD
segments
may
be
displayed
or
printed.
Turn
the
Instrument
off
and
wait
at
least
three
seconds
before
switching
it
on
again.

The
display
will
read
"M-SELECT"
during
the
command
request
mode.
Begin
a
recording
mode
as
shown
below.

In
the
Auto-Interval
Print
Mode,
the
instrument
will
automatically
print
elapsed
time
(hours
:
minutes
:
seconds)
and
the
temperature
reading
at
the
selected
time
interval.
Enter
this
mode
by
pressing
one
of
the
following
keys.

time
begins
when
the
key
is
pressed
and
will
be
shown
continuously
on
the
display.

interval

the
unit
is

STOP
key
and
then
select
the
new
time

ALM
PRT
In
the
Alarm
Print
Mode,
the
instrument
will
record
the
elapsed
time
and
temperature
reading
only
when
outside
the
limits
specified
on
the
thermometer.
If
alarm
conditions
exist,
it
will
record
the
highest
or
lowest
temperature
reached,
as
appropriate.
Printout
will
occur
at
1-minute
intervals.
Elapsed
time
begins
when
the
key
is
pressed
and
will
be
shown
continuously
on
the
display.
To
start
this
mode,
press
the
ALM
PRT
key.

Print
Mode
NO.

In
the
Number
Print
Mode,
the
Instrument
will
record
the
sequential
reading
number
and
the
temperature.
To
begin
this
mode,
press
the
NO.
PRT
key.
The
display
will
show
the
last
reading
number
printed.
This
is
a
manual
mode—
the
reading
number
is
incremented
and
the
temperature
is
recorded
only
when
this
key
is
pressed.
Pressing
the
PRT
key
in
this
mode
will
record
temperature
without
incrementing
the
reading
number.
d)
Other
keys
During
the
Auto-Interval,
Alarm,
or
Number
Print
Modes,
you
may
also
use
the
STOP
key,
the
PRT
key
or
the
FEED
key.
STOP
Pressing
this
key
will
end
the
current
recording
mode.
PRT
FEED
Pressing
this
key
Instructs
the
instrument
to
print
the
current
reading
and
elapsed
time.
An
"x"
in
the
left-hand
margin
of
the
printout
will
indicate
this
operation.
Pressing
this
key
will
advance
the
paper.
NOTE:
These
keys
will
not
function
while
the
printer
is
printing.
8.
Error
Messages
In
addition
to
displaying
instructions,
the
display
will
prompt
you
with
the
following
error
codes.

and
the
connection
to
the
input
jack
on
the
thermometer.

Use
and
Storage
of
Chart
Paper
This
printer
uses
heat-sensitive
paper.
Use
only
Cole-Parmer
8533-46
paper
in
this
instrument.
To
presen/e
the
paper's
sensitivity
and
your
recorded
data,
following
these
guidelines
for
use
and
storage.
a)
Avoid
storing
the
chart
paper
at
high
temperature
or
humidity
levels.
The
paper
will
maintain
its
sensitivity
for
at
least
five
years
when
stored
in
a
dark
place
below
30°
C,
and
below
60%
R.
H.
The
recorded
paper
can
be
stored
for
at
least
ten
years
at
these
levels.
b)
Avoid
exposing
the
paper
to
direct
sunlight,
or
to
fluorescent
light
for
extended
periods
of
time.
0)
When
pasting
the
printed
chart
paper
do
not
use
paste
containing
organic
solvents.
Farinaceous
paste,
carboxymethyl
cellulose,
and
arable
gum
are
recommended.
d)
Avoid
covering
the
printed
chart
paper
with
plasticizing
material,
such
as
plastic
film
or
cellophane
tape.

Instrument

warrants
this
product
to
be
free
from
defects
in
material
and
workmanship
for
a
period
of
one
year
from
the
date
of
purchase.
Disposable
batteries
are
not
covered
under
this
warranty.
If
repair
or
adjustment
is
necessary
and
has
not
been
the
result
of
abuse
or
misuse
within
the
one-year
period,
please
return—freight
prepaid—and
correction
of
the
defect
will
be
made
without
charge.
Out
of
warranty
products
will
be
repaired
on
a
charge
basis.
