Pacemaker guidance: potential interference
Radiofrequency energy (RF) from cell phones can interact with some electronic devices. This type of interference is called
electromagnetic interference (EMI). For this reason, the FDA helped develop a detailed test method to measure EMI of
implanted cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators from cell phones. This test method is now part of a standard sponsored by the
Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI). This standard will allow manufacturers to ensure that
cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators are safe from cell phone EMI.
The FDA continues to monitor the use of cell phones for possible interactions with other medical devices. Should harmful
interference occur, FDA will conduct testing to assess the interference and work to resolve the problem.
For more information reference sources for pacemakers can be found at the US Food and Drug Administration web site:
https://www.fda.gov / Radiation-Emitting Products / cell phones / potential-cell-phone-interference-pacemakers-and-other-
medical-devices.
Laser SAFETY CONSIDERATION
The Alio Vend card reader includes a laser emitter and corresponding drive circuitry. The laser output is designed to remain
within Class 1 laser safety limits under all reasonably foreseeable conditions, including single faults, in compliance with IEC
60825-1:2014 (Third Edition).
The laser output will remain within Class 1 limits if the CPI recommended device settings (API settings) are used and the
operating conditions specified are respected.
The laser output power must not be increased by any means and no optics should be used with the intention of focusing the
laser beam.
The laser does not require any control, adjustment or maintenance.
Caution: Use of controls or adjustments or performance of procedures other than those specified herein may result in
hazardous radiation exposure.
Laser characteristics. This device emits pulsed laser radiation with a period of 16.7 nanoseconds and 5 nanoseconds on
time, resulting in a duty cycle of 30%. The wavelength is 945 nm.
Compliance statement for Laser Notice 56. Complies with 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11 except for conformance with IEC

11
1
Disconnect the vending machine from its power source.
2
Identify an available location on the front of the vending machine door, preferably an EVA standard size knockout.
3
Verify the cut out is prepared and cleaned before installing the Alio Vend card reader.
4
Fit unit into the vending machine knockout.
5
Fasten device in place with the four supplied M4 screws and M4 spring washers. Use the standard drilling template on Page
15 if necessary.
Install the Alio Vend card reader using only the provided M4 screws and M4 spring washers. The use of longer
screws may damage the device.
6
Locate the MDB harness connecting the cash payment peripherals to the control board (VMC). Isolate the two open
connectors.
7
Plug the MDB harness into the open MDB connectors.
The connection from the MDB harness to the VMC must be the first in line (closest to the board); then all other MDB
peripherals; and last the coin mechanism.
8
If an audit is required, connect a DEX cable between the Alio Vend DEX port on the back of the device to the audit target,
either the VMC or Coin Mechanism.
2.5.2 Installing the 4G External Antenna
Refer to Figures 5 and 6 on Page 12 during this procedure.
1
Find a mounting location that will not interfere with the operation of the vending machine.
2
Disconnect the vending machine from its external power source.
3
Thoroughly clean the surface of the vending machine in the 4G antenna installation area.
4
Drill a 5/8” (15.9 mm) hole through the top of the vending machine. If an antenna hole exists, widen it to 5/8” (15.9 mm).
DO NOT drill a second antenna hole.
5
Thread the antenna cable through the top of the vending machine.
6
Secure the antenna by tightening the lock washer and nut on the antenna post. Recommended wrench torque = 1.7 Nm.
7
Connect the antenna cable to the SMA antenna jack on the back of the Alio Vend card reader.
