3.4 Performance Features
Up to 12 IDE hard disk drives can be installed in the sub-rack
which hard disk drive capacities of 160, 250 or 300 GB (higher
capacities on request) being possible. This means that a double-
figure net storage capacity in the TB range can be achieved.
The hard disk drives can be configured as different RAID levels
(redundant array of independent disks) to ensure the maximum
reliability, performance and capacity of the mass storage media.
The integral hot plug function ensures that in the event of a defect
hard disk drives can be replaced without any problem whilst the
system continues to operate. In addition a hard disk drive can be
configured as the hot spare so that it automatically takes over the
function of a defective drive if it suffers a failure.
Redundant power supply units and additional fans, also with a hot
plug function, ensure that operation can continue perfectly and
smoothly.

5 Installation and connection
5.1 Requirements at the installation site
The DAS-100/200 storage system is designed to be installed and
operated in a standard 19" rack. Four height units (HU) and an
installation depth of at least 55 cm are required for its installation.
Anair-conditioned and dust-controlled room is highly recommended
for its location.
Taking data protection into account
The system stores personal information subject to data protection.
For this reason, install the system in a room which can be locked
and which is only accessible by authorized persons.
Taking environmental conditions into account
The prescribed environmental conditions must be complied with at
the installation site, see technical data. Overheating, in particular,
can cause permanent damage to the unit.
The ambient temperature may not exceed 35 °C (95° F) during
operation. Always ensure proper ventilation.
Mains voltage
Check the mains voltage at the installation site before connection
and start-up. The mains voltage must match the rated voltage of
the DAS. The DAS may never be operated with a voltage other
than the specified mains voltage. Otherwise, the DAS can be
permanently damaged.
Mains connection
The DAS may only be connected via a UPS (uninterruptible power
supply)to a freely-accessible and grounded protected-contactoutlet
in the building installation.
IMPORTANT
Possible loss of all recorded data and / or damage
to the HDDs.
Operate the DAS-100/200 using an UPS and a
programmable socket strip.

Fig. 5-1

19
DallmeierelectronicGmbH&Co.KG
5.3 Connection
5.3.1 SCSI
The data is transferred between the recording system (DMS/DLS)
and the storage system (DAS) via the SCSI interface.
The connection is always made at the DMS/DLS and DAS-200
using a HD68 plug and at the DAS-100 using a VHDCI68 plug.
DAS-100 CH1 in DMS/DLS 1
CH1 out Terminator or next DAS
(daisy chaining)
DAS-200 CH1 in DMS/DLS 1
CH2 in DMS/DLS 2
IMPORTANT
No data recording.
The CH 1 out interface of the last DAS in the chain
must always be disabled with a terminator in a
cascading system.
The supplied terminator is fitted with a status LED. If the green
light in this is lit, the SCSI cabling in the system is OK. If the red
LED light is lit, an error has occurred.
Proceed as follows to rectify this situation:
zCheck the plug contacts
zCheck the cables for signs of damage
zCompletely disconnect the voltage supply (pull the mains plug)
and restart the system
Fig. 5-2
VHDCI68HD68

20
DAS-100/200
DallmeierelectronicGmbH&Co.KG
The various SCSI cables are sensitive components of the system.
Damaged cables may cause drops in performance and / or data
loss.
Remember the following points when connecting the cables:
zDo not kink the cables (maintain a bending angle of > 90°)
zDistance from live cables at least 20 cm
zSecure the cables after installation
5.3.2 Serial
The connection between DMS/DLS and the DAS via the serial
interface is used for transmitting status messages to the DMS/
DLS. These messages are output to the recorder (as from version
5.3.1 with SP G) or forwarded to the PGuard software (as from
recorder version 5.3.1 and PGuard 4.0.0).
The connection is made at both DAS systems with the black serial
cable using the RS232 interface. The serial interface can be freely
selected at the DMS/DLS (COM1 or COM2).
Even in the case of a dual host system or a cascading storage
system is only one serial connection may be made between a DMS/
DLS and a DAS. In other words only the status messages from a
specific DAS can be output to a specific DMS/DLS.
The following settings have to be made on the DMS/DLS:
1. The appropriate serial interface must be set to
External storage system (Setup > Interfaces > Serial).
2. The System system messages must be activated
(Setup > System > Options > System Messages).
5.4 Configuration DMS/DLS
If a DAS system is used, in addition to the normal configuration of
the DMS/DLS recorder (for example track and camera settings),
the exclusive recorder to the external storage system must also be
ensured. This is done in the Setup > Recording > HDD Manage-
ment dialog.
