Introduction
This is the user’s guide for the home ventilation unit HCH 5 and HCH 8 from Dantherm.
The table of contents below lists the sections in this guide.

This instruction covers units with serial numbers equal to or higher than:

Warning
The ducting system must not be mounted until the unit is ready to operate. The power
must not be connected until the ducting system has been mounted.
The ventilation unit should not be used to dry newly built houses during construction or
immediate
ly after construction.
The ducts must be dimmed and the units must not be connected until the house is
ready for occupation, which means that the house is clean and dry. This is to prevent
any construction dust and condensed water from depositing in the du
cting system and
to prevent any sanitation inconveniences from the ventilation units later on.
If above mentioned warnings are disrespected,
the warranty of the unit will be annulled
and any kind of maintenance will be done at the customers own expense.

Introduction
This section gives a description of the unit.
The use of HCH 5
and HCH 8
HCH 5 and HCH 8 are used for ventilation of private houses. The units provide fresh
heated outside air through the unit into the house.
Polluted air and warm extract air is
used to heat up the outside air by the means of heat exchange.

Air flow
The following describes and illustrates the air flow in a HCH 5 and HCH 8:

Description

Outside air (T1)
Outside air which enters the heat exchanger ready for
heating by the extract air from the house (

).

Supply air (T2)
The supply air is heated by the means of heat recircula-
tion from the extract air (

).

Extract air (T3)
”Polluted” and warm extract air is used to heat up the
outside air () by the means of heat exchange in the
heat exchanger.

Exhaust air (T4)
The heat of the extract air is used to heat up the cold
outside air (

). The exhaust air is led out of the house.





Functional description
Important
The ventilation system must always be operating!
Besides the four hours where the unit can be stopped by the control panel, it is not ad-
visable to stop the unit. The risk by stopping the unit for a considerable period is that
moist air can condense in the ducting system and in the ve
ntilation unit with the risk of
water damage
in the building construction, damages on the unit and sanitary problems.
Hence it is not advisable to stop ventilation
– also during longer holidays. If necessary,
turn the unit to Fan Step 2 or 1 in Manual Operation instead.
Function
The unit supplies fresh outside air into the house.
Polluted and moist air is sucked out of kitchen, living room, bathroom etc. and led
through the unit, where by means of the heat exchanger the unit uses this air to heat up
the new, fresh air, before the fresh air is supplied into the house.
Control panel
The control panel is used for setting functions of the unit.
The control panel is de
scribed on page 9.
Automatic
Demand Mode
When the unit operates in Automatic Demand Mode, the flow rate is regulated according
to the humidity level in the house. It is measured by a humidity sensor, which is situated
in the
extract duct of the ventilation unit.
•At air humidity higher than 45 % RH the unit constantly operates on Fan Step 3
•At air humidity below 45 % RH the unit will adjust air flow rates, by slowly reducing.
If the air humidity is below 45 % RH in a considerable period of time the unit will
start operating at Fan Step 1
The set po
int for Automatic Demand Mode is adjustable with the remote control. Auto-
matic Demand Mode is always recommended as it ensures air change to match the de-
mand. Automatic Demand Mode also prevents the house from drying out, especially
during winter.

Manual operation
In order to change the air flow rate, defined by Automatic Demand Mode, it is possible
to select between Fan Step 0 – 4 manually. See the following examples:

Function
Fan Step 0 - 4 on the unit is adjustable on the control panel.
0
The unit is turned off. It is only used due to e.g. obnoxious smells
from outside.
If the fans are disconnected for more than four hours there is a risk of
condensation in the ducts and risk of moisture damage in the unit.(all
four lamps for fan steps are turned off).
Note that Fan Step 0 is only active for four hours, after which the unit
will continue operating on Fan Step 3.

Can be used at night time or in absence due to e.g. holidays.
When the house is empty the ventilation can temporarily be reduced.

Is used at a normal demand for ventilation.
Can also be used during absence if Fan Step 1 provides too little air
change

Is used for a normal or high ventilation demand.
E.g. when cooking, bad, drying a larger amount of clothes, having vis-
itors and when heat waste occurs

Is used when a large amount of air change is needed – e.g. during or
right after a party where the house needs to be thoroughly ventilated.
Note that Fan Step 4 is only active for four hours after which the unit
will continue operating on Fan Step 3.
Manual bypass
The purpose of bypass is to cool down the house by leading the cold outside air flow
directly into the house avoiding it is heated up in the heat exchanger.
During normal operation (when manual bypass is
not activated) the unit cools down by
the means of automatic bypas
s control, when the inside as well as the outside tempera-
tures allows it, which is the reason why in most cases manual bypass is not necessary.
In houses with large fronts of glass facing south, which causes a large amount of heat-
ing, it can be necessary t
o activate manual bypass in the early spring or in the autumn,
because the automatic bypass does not automatically activate refrigeration with outside
air since the outside temperature is below 15 °C.
When using manual bypass the unit supplies cool outside
air directly to the house for
six hours. Information regarding set points for manual and automatic bypass is found in
the installation guide.

Functional description, continued
Filters
The purpose with the filters is to remove dust and other impurities from the outside air
before it is supplied into the house
, and to protect both the heat exchanger and the
fans from any dirt and impurities coming from the house.
As a standa
rd the unit is delivered with G4 filters on both the supply air and the extract
air sides. It is possible to buy F7
-pollen filters (accessories) for the supply air, which
strains even more, especially suited for people with pollen allergy
.
The filters must be changed at regular intervals, more information regarding change of
filters in the section “Preventive maintenance”, on page 14.

Description of the control panel
Introduction
This section gives a detailed description of the HCP4 control panel. See also the section
“Functional description” on page 6.
Illustration
This illustration shows the control panel which informs about the operation of the unit
by different kinds of indicators.
The control panel has three press buttons which are easy to activate:

The indicator of operation can show three different
states:
•Green on - operation is running fine
•Yellow flash on and off and bleep- sound - Filter
must be changed
•Red and bleep-sound – error on the unit

Bypass
The button will lit when activated and warm, moist ex-
tract air will be redirected in order to avoid the inlet
into the heat exchanger, by that outside air will not be
heated up before supplying into the house.
Manual bypass is active for six hours after which the
unit automatically returns to automatic bypass.
The automatic bypass module opens and closes ac-
cording to set points from the factory settings. See al-
so the section “Set points and control strategies” in the
installation guide.

Manual operation
By activating manual operation you are able to shift
between ‘turned off ‘and Fan Step 1 to 4.
For additional descriptions regarding using the fan
four steps, see the section ”Functional description”, on
page 6

Automatic Demand Mode
By activating Automatic Demand Mode the unit is
controlled according to the humidity level of the

Automatic Demand Mode always operates on Fan
Step 1, 2 or 3.

Acoustic filter alarm
When an error occurs on the unit, the control panel
bleeps once every hour (also bleeps when a filter
change is needed).

Introduction
This section only describes how the different functions are activated and operated.
For further
information regarding each individual function please see the section
“
Functional description”, on page 6 or the section ”Set points and control strategies” in
the installation guide.
Energy saving
Energy saving turns off all control panel lights – except the green light-emitting diode –
after two minutes if the unit is not activated.
Control panel
This is the control panel which is delivered with every unit. See a description of each
button below:
Manual Bypass Mode
Push this button to active Manual Bypass.
When bypass is activated the button will be alight. Bypass is only active for six hours af-
ter which the unit will switch to Automatic Bypass Mode.
Automatic Demand
Mode
Push this button to activate Automatic Demand mode of the air volume. When Automat-
ic Demand Mode is active both the button and the amount of light
-emitting diodes
matching the fan steps alight.
Manual Operation
Mode
Push this button to activate Manual Operation Mode.
Fan Step 0
-4 is chosen by repeatedly pushing the manual operation button. If the unit
needs to be stopped the button must be activated until all four fan step buttons are off.
The unit and Fan Step 4 is off for four hours after which it returns to Manual Operation
Mode, Fan Step
3.
Fireplace Mode
Press for 6 seconds until Fan Step 3 flashes on the control panel. The unit stops ex-
tracting air and will maintain supplying air on Fan Step 3 for 15 minutes.
Maximum Speed
Fan Step 4 operates for four hours. It is especially useful at high room temperatures,
e.g. with many people present in the house .The fan speed automatically resets to the
last selected fan step.

Installation Mode
Press Manual
+ Auto for 6 seconds until Fan Step 3 alights.
The unit will operate on Fan Step 3 for one hour. Installation Mode overrides all other
modes during that period.

Change of filters and resetting the filter alarm is described in details in the section
”Preventive maintenance”, on page 14

Preventive maintenance
Introduction
In order for home ventilation to operate safely it is necessary carry out preventive
maintenance, e.g. replacing filters and cleaning the unit.
Changing of
filters
Change the filters when the filter alarm is visible on the control panel (the diode flashes
yellow on and off) and the acoustic alarm bleeps (once every hour).

Remove the insulating cover plates in
front of the filters.
Note that the smooth side of the sheet
must be turned towards the front door.

Change the filters and discard the old
filters in an environment-friendly way
(flammable material).
Note the arrows on the filters – they
must point down!
The filter opening areas are for
filters only!

Set back the filter insulating cover plates. It is important that they face the
hard, smooth side outwards and the soft side inward.

Reconnect power supply

Reset the filter alarm by pushing the
button for two seconds and then close
the door again.
Check that the light-emitting diode on
the control panel gives out a green
light.

Preventive maintenance, continued
Cleaning
Keep the unit clean to ensure perfect operation and good hygiene.
If the unit is filthy, e.g. around
filter openings, clean with a firmly wrung dishcloth with
tepid water and detergent.
Important: Chemical solvents are not allowed!
Terms for warranty
The factory warranty is only valid when preventive maintenance can be proven. Preven-
tive maintenance must be carried out with a minimum interval of six months.
Documentation of maintenance should be a written log/journal. Regarding which ser-
vices needed, see the section ”Preventive maintenance” in the installation guide.
