POWER Green Indicates power on.
POWER FAIL Red This LED goes on when a fault occurs to power supply.
NOT READY Red
This LED goes on when a generic fault occurs. It also
goes on for a few seconds during the power on of the
camera.
OFF LINE Yellow This LED indicates camera inactivity.
ENCODER Yellow Encoder input signal. This LED goes on when an
optical encoder connected to the DV9500 is pulsing.
PRESENCE
SENSOR Yellow Presence sensor signal. This LED goes on when
presence sensor signal is active.
USER DEF Yellow
User defined. Programmable LED. In the standard
application signals that COM1 has been redirected on
the camera link serial port and is not available anymore
on the 9 pin connector.

GUIDE TO INSTALLATION
The following can be used as a checklist to verify all the necessary steps for complete
installation of the system.
1. Read all information in the section “Safety Precautions” at the beginning of this manual.
2. Execute the mechanical installation according to the specific system design
documentation and to the procedures described in paragraph 2.3.
3. Mount the system sensors according to the specific system design documentation and to
the procedures described in paragraphs 2.4 and 2.5.
4. Provide system cabling according to the specific system design documentation and to the
procedures described in paragraph 2.6.
5. Perform all the setup procedures as described in chapter 3.
6. Verify the system decoding performance.

1 INTRODUCTION
The DV9500 series is made up of different camera models to cover any type of application
need. The various models depend on:
• the focal length;
• focus type, either fixed focus or autofocus system;
• and for the video output type, either Camera-Link or LVDS.
NOTE
The LVDS model is available only on demand.
The camera is always part of a reading station, a more complex system that, for example,
can include:
- A set of illuminators. According to the application the following illuminators can be used:
LS-701, LS-504, LS-660 and LS-690.
- A set of sensors (optical encoder, presence sensor, distance sensor etc.).
- One DD9500 decoder for each camera.
- DC9500 controller.
- External Mirrors: EMK-400 o EMK-800.

This chapter introduces a minimum set of concepts necessary for camera installation and
setting. Theoretical and practical information necessary to design an entire station exceed
the purpose of this document.

Paragraph 1.1 describes the camera acquisition process.
Paragraph 1.2 describes the typical camera positioning.
Paragraph 1.3 describes some typical system configurations.
A detailed list of the camera kits and accessories is given in Appendix B.
1.1 PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION
The DV9500 camera is able to acquire images without any external control and with the
information coming from some external sensors.
This paragraph contains a brief description of the acquisition process necessary to
understand the camera mounting and setup parameters.

The camera manages three kinds of external sensors:
- Speed Sensor: at all times the camera needs to know the speed of the objects to be
acquired. The speed sensor is usually an OEK-1 optical encoder connected to the belt
that generates a square wave with a frequency proportional to the speed.
- Height/Side Position Sensor: the camera intrinsic depth of field is usually much lower
than the requested one. For this reason the DV9500 camera is equipped with a very high
speed autofocus system. This system is able to follow the parcel shape in real time
assuring perfectly focused images in every condition. The focusing position is computed
by the camera based on the position of the parcel measured by an height sensor (see
LCC-9010 or LCC-9006) or by side position sensors (see DK-500). Side position is always
expressed as a distance from the opposite side of the conveyor.

- Trigger Source: the camera needs to know when an object has to be acquired. In
multiple camera systems, each package has to be uniquely identified by all the cameras.
For this reason the cameras of each reading station share a unique trigger source. The
trigger is usually generated by the height sensor when the measured height goes over a
predefined threshold. The trigger device always detects the package presence on an
horizontal line perpendicular to the conveyor belt. Side position sensors can be used as
trigger sources only if their measurement angle σis 0.
The sensors can be physically connected to the camera or to a DC9500 station controller
that elaborates the information and distributes it to the cameras.
The start and stop of an acquisition are triggered by a start/stop event generated by the
trigger device.
The acquisition of a package doesn’t start when the trigger source detects it, but with a
certain delay depending on:
- the distance between the trigger device and the view line at belt level,
- the view line angle αof the camera,
- the speed of the object,
- the height of the package.
Based on the camera position the camera tries to acquire one (reading angle α≈0°) or two
faces of the parcel (α≈±45°).
When the acquisition starts the camera starts adapting acquisition parameters to the current
conditions:
- Acquisition period: the camera acquires one line at a time. If the image quality
specifications ask for square pixels to obtain unstretched images, the acquisition speed
must be set based on the package speed and on its height (near images have a higher
resolution in the scan direction).
- Focus position: the camera autofocus system follows the object shape. In case of sharp
distance changes that can’t be followed by the autofocus system, the surface nearest to
the camera is privileged. Different focusing modes can be selected based on the camera
position.
- Camera sensitivity: linear cameras cannot use the sensitivity feedback that is used on
area cameras, they have to set the sensitivity based on what they expect to acquire. The
sensitivity is set based on the surface distance (taller packages are usually more
illuminated) and speed (the acquisition speed influences the camera exposure).
- Compensation look-up table: the camera can use different light profile compensation
tables based on the height of the package.
All of these parameters are continuously set during the acquisition phase.
Between two acquisitions the camera continues to adapt the acquisition period to the current
belt speed.
Focus position, sensitivity and light compensation are not guaranteed out of acquisition
phase.

A typical single camera station includes:
- One DV9500 camera selected according to the reading specifications.
- One or two LS-701, LS-504, LS-660 or LS-690 illuminator.
- One OEK-1 optical encoder
- One
LCC-9010 or LCC-9006 height sensor or one side position sensor DK-500
- One DD9500 decoder
- One C-BOX 100 junction box
- One PWR-120 24 Vdc power supply
- Connection cables
Options may include:
- one EMK-400 or EMK-800 external mirror

All the sensors are managed directly from the camera.

C-BOX 100 is a passive junction box used to easily connect the sensors and the power
supply to the camera.
The illuminators are controlled directly from the camera using COM2.
The camera is connected to the decoder using a single camera link cable or an LVDS cable
plus an RS232 serial cable connected to COM1.
The decoder communicates directly with the host using an RS232 serial port, Ethernet or any
other communication channel available.
Any additional digital I/O required by the application is managed from the decoder.
1.3.2 Multiple Cameras without DC9500 Controller
This configuration can be used for top + side reading with up to 2 cameras.

A typical multiple camera station without DC9500 includes:
- Two DV9500 cameras selected according to the reading specifications.
- Two to four LS-701, LS-504, LS-660 or LS-690 illuminators.
- One OEK-1 optical encoder
- One
LCC-9010 or LCC-9006 height sensor

DK-500 position sensor
- One DD9500 decoder for each camera
- One C-BOX 100 junction box for each camera

Each camera manages its position sensor.
One master camera (usually the TOP one) receives the signal from the speed sensor and
from the trigger source and distributes it using COM2. Transmission from master COM2 to
slave COM2 is mono-directional and uses a special “null modem” serial cable.
Each camera is connected to a C-BOX 100, .C-BOX 100, a passive junction box used to
easily connect the sensors and the power supply to the camera.
The illuminators are controlled by one of the decoders.
Each camera is connected to its decoder using a single camera link cable or an LVDS cable
plus an RS232 serial cable connected to COM1.
The decoders communicate using TCP-IP on an Ethernet connection. All the decoders run
decoding software, one of them runs the DlMaster application. DlMaster collects data from all
the decoders and communicates with the host.
DlMaster can be executed also on an additional PC connected to the LAN.
Any addition digital I/O required by the application is managed from the decoders.
1.3.3 Multiple Cameras with DC9500 Controller
This is a typical configuration for multisided applications. One to six cameras are supported.
