To Install Batteries:
1. Open thebatterycompartmentcover(locatedon
thebackoftheremote).
2. PlacetheAAbatteriesinthecompartmentand
matchthe+and-polaritysymbolsinside.
3. Replacethecover.

PROGRAMMING A DEVICE
TheDIRECTVBigButtonRemotecomespre-
programmedtooperateaDTVReceiverorDVR.To
controldevicesotherthandefaultbrands,followthese
steps; otherwise,skip thissection.
Beforeproceeding,findthecodesforthedevicesyou
wanttoprograminManufacturer'sCodesandwrite
themdownorhighlightthem.(See“Manufacturer’s
Codes”onpage13.)
NOTE: ToprogramaTV/DVD,TV/VCR/DVD,orTV/
VCRCombo,usetheAUX 1 or AUX 2 key.
1. Turnonthedevice(forexample,TV)and,if
needed,loadmedia(forexample,DVD).

is,DIRECTV,TV,AUX 1,orAUX 2).
3. PressandholdthemodekeyuntilthegreenLED
flashestwice.Releasethekey.
4. Enterthefirstfive-digitcodeforyourdevice.The
LEDblinksonceaseachdigitisentered.Ifthecode
iscorrect,theLEDblinkstwice.
NOTE: IftheLEDdoesnotblinktwice,repeatsteps2
to5andtryenteringthecodeagain.
5. AimtheremoteatthedeviceandpressPOWER (or
PLAY,ifitdoesnothaveaPOWER key). The device
shouldturnoff.Ifitdoesnot,repeatsteps2to6,
tryingeachcodeforyourbranduntilyoufindone
thatworks.Ifyoucannotfindacodethatworks,
seeSearchingforYourCode.
6. Repeatsteps1to5foreachdevice.Forfuture
reference,writedowneachworkingdevicecodein
asafeplace.
SEARCHING FOR YOUR CODE
Ifyourdevicedoesnotrespondtotheremoteafter
tryingallcodeslistedforyourbrand,orifyourbrandis
notlisted,trysearchingforyourcode.Forexample,to
searchfora codefor yourTV:
1. PressandholdTV untilthegreenLEDblinkstwice.
2. Enter9 9 1.TheLEDblinkstwice.
3. Enterthedevice IDcode,accordingtothe
followingtable:
4. AimtheremoteattheTVandpressPOWER.The
remotesendsIRcodesfromitslibrarytothe
selected device,startingwiththemostpopular
codefirst.
NOTE: Thisprocessmaytakeupto30minutes.

CHECKING THE CODES
Ifyouhavesetuptheremoteusingtheprocedurein
SearchingforYourCode,youmayneedtofindoutwhich
four-digitcodeisoperatingyourequipment.
Forexample,tofindoutwhichcodeisassignedtoyour
TV:
1. PressandholdTV untilthegreenLEDblinkstwice.
2. Enter9 9 0.TheLEDblinkstwice.
3. Toviewthecodeforthefirstdigit,press1.Count
theLEDblinks(forexample,threeblinks=3),and
writedownthenumber.
NOTE: Ifacodedigitis0,theLEDdoesnotblink.
4. Repeatstep4forthefourremainingdigits,using2
fortheseconddigit,3forthethirddigit,4forthe
fourthdigit,and5forthefifthdigit.
5. Tocheckforotherdevicecodes,repeatsteps1to4,
substitutingtheappropriatekeyforeachdevice
youarechecking.
CHANGING VOLUME LOCK
CAUTION: Changingthevolumelocksettingscould
negativelyaffectyourDIRECTVReceiver’soperation.
Pleasereadtheseinstructionsthoroughlybeforemaking
anychanges.Forexample,changingthevolumelock
settingscancauseyourDIRECTVReceivernotto
controlyourTV’svolumewheninDIRECTVmode.This
couldcauseyounottobeabletocontrolthevolumeif
youramplifieristurnedoffandyourTVismuted.
YourDIRECTVBigButtonRemoteispresetsothe
volumekeysalwayscontrolthevolumeontheTVyou've
setupontheremotewhentheremoteisinDIRECTV
mode.However,youcanchangethissettingsothe
remotecontrolsanotherdevice,suchasahometheater
amplifier.Toenablethisfeature,performthefollowing
steps:
NOTE: YoucannotlockthevolumetoDIRECTV mode,
orto AUX 1/AUX 2 modesifthosemodesare
setupforaDIRECTVReceiver.
Unlocking Volume Control for a Single Device
(Individual Volume Unlock)
1. Selectandholdthemodekeyforthedeviceto
unlockforvolumecontroluntilthegreenLED
blinkstwice.
2. Enter9 9 3 andthenpressVOL-.TheLEDblinks
four times.

Locking Volume Control to One Mode (Global Volume
Lock)
1. Selectandholdthemodekeyforadevice(for
example,TV)untilthegreenLEDblinkstwice.
2. Enter9 9 3 andthenpressthekeyforasecond
device(forexample,AUX 1 tocontrolthevolumeof
anaudioamplifier).TheLEDblinkstwice.Now
whenyoupressVOL+,VOL-,orMute,theselected
device(forexample,AUX 1)controlsthevolume
regardless of the current mode.
Unlocking All Volume Control
1. Selectandholdthemodekeyforadevice(for
example,TV)untilthegreenLEDblinkstwice.
2. Enter9 9 3 andthenpressVOL+.TheLEDblinks
fourtimes.Volumeisindependentlycontrolledfor
allprogrammeddevices.
CHANGING CHANNEL LOCK
CAUTION: Changingthechannellocksettingscould
negativelyaffectyourDIRECTVReceiver’soperation.
Pleasereadtheseinstructionsthoroughlybeforemaking
anychanges.
TheDIRECTVBigButtonRemotecomespresettoallow
independentchannelcontrolofeachselecteddevice.
However,youmaychangetheChannelLocksettingso
thattheDIRECTVReceiver’s(DIRECTV mode
only)channel keyscontrolthechannelsinallother
modes.

LEDflashestwice.
2. Enter9 7 3 andthenpressCHSTheLEDblinks
twice.NowwhenyoupressCHSorCHT,the
satellitereceivercontrolsthechannelsregardlessof
thecurrentmode.
Unlocking Channels
1. PressandholdtheDIRECTV keyuntilthegreen
LEDflashestwice.
2. Enter9 7 3 andthenpressCHTTheLEDblinks
fourtimes.NowwhenyoupressCHSorCHT,the
individualdevicescontrolthechannels.

ProgrammingResetfeature.Youcanuseittoremoveall
customprogramming.

IMPORTANT: Executingthisprogramerasesallcustom
settingsforVolumeLockandChannelLock.
1. Pressandholdadevicekey(forexample,
DIRECTV).
2. Enter9 8 1.Thelast-selecteddevicekeyblinks
twice,pauses,andblinkstwiceagaintoconfirm
thatallcustomprogrammingiscleared.
TROUBLESHOOTING
PROBLEM: Lightatthetopoftheremoteblinkswhen
youpressakey,butthecomponentdoesnotrespond.
SOLUTION 1: Tryreplacingthebatteries.(See“Installing
Batteries”onpage3.)
SOLUTION 2: MakesureyouareaimingtheDIRECTV
BigButtonRemoteatyourhomeentertainment
componentandthatyouarewithin15feetofthe
componentyouaretryingtocontrol.
PROBLEM: TheDIRECTVBigButtonRemotedoesnot
controlcomponentorcommands arenotrecognized
properly.
SOLUTION: Tryalllistedcodesforthedevicebrandbeing
setup.Makesureallcomponentscanbeoperatedwith
an infrared remote control.
PROBLEM: TV/VCRcombodoesnotrespondproperly.
SOLUTION: UsetheVCRcodesforyourbrand.Some
combounitsmayrequirebothaTVcodeandaVCR
codeforfulloperation.(See“ProgrammingaDevice”on
page5.)
PROBLEM: CH+,CH-,and PREV donotworkforyour
RCA TV.
SOLUTION: DuetoRCAdesignforcertainmodels(1983-
1987),onlytheoriginalremotecontroloperatesthese
functions.
PROBLEM: Changingchannelsdoesnotworkproperly.
PROBLEM: RemotecontroldoesnotturnonSonyor
SharpTV/VCRCombo.
SOLUTION: Forpoweron,theseproductsrequiresetting
upTVcodesontheremotecontrol.ForSony,useTV
code0000andVCRcode0032.ForSharp,useTVcode
0093andVCRcode0048.(See“ProgrammingaDevice”
