THE VoFX QUICK START GUIDE
Thank you for your purchase of the DOD VoFX vocal processor. Before you begin, read this section so you will be
familiar with your VoFX right from the start. The VoFX will quickly become the most important tool you have to make
your songs sound like professional studio recordings in any live application. If you are using the VoFX in karaoke
applications, you can remove vocals from most ordinary CD's. Be sure to learn more about this feature in the karaoke
section located on page 13.
With the VoFX, you have the ability to access several different kinds of effects at the same time. Some types of effects
are better suited to a specific style of song. We have already done all the hard work for you and designed effect
Programs that have the most popular types of effects grouped together in Banks. A preset can be made up of one or
several effects that you access by stepping on any of the preset switches marked 1, 2 or 3. A bank will always have 3
presets in it. There are 10 banks of 3 prrograms (01 through 93) each and you can step through the banks by
stepping on the <Bank> switch. It's that simple.
QUICK START
1. Input Connection:Insert either a 1/4” or XLR microphone cable
2. Output Connection: Run from the Left, Right or stereo outputs to the next device in the audio chain.
3. Apply Power: Connect included power supply and power up.
4. Set Input and Output Levels: Set your Input level so the Clip LED occasionally lights. The Output Level should
be set at your desired level. NOW YOUR NOW READY TO ROLL !!!

SECTION 1 - GETTING STARTED
Supplying Power
The VoFX, is designed to “Plug in and Go”, so connect the included power supply and the VofX will power up and be
ready to serve. It is always a good ideas to follow some electrical safety standards, we have listed them below to keep
things running smooth.
• Always make sure you have a "clean" power source for connecting to
the VoFX. This means that the AC power line you connect to the VoFX
should be as free from voltage fluctuations and RF interference as
possible. In recording environments, "clean" power is also important in
preventing AC hum or buzz from getting to tape.
• Use a good quality spike / surge suppressor (also called a power strip).
This is an inexpensive solution to all but the most severe AC line
conditions.
• Always make sure that your audio lines are as far as possible from
power cables. This will further prevent noise, hum, and stray
magnetic fields from entering your signal path. If audio and power
lines must run close to each other, try to avoid running them parallel
to one another.
Front Panel Controls of the VoFX
This Front and Rear Panel Guide on the following pages, gives you the simple low down on the VoFX and Shows you
just what all the Buttons and Lights do.

SECTION 2 - PROGRAMMING THE VoFX
The VoFX is designed to be both easy to program and flexible. The structure of
an VoFX Program is logical, and it doesn't require a lot of time to master.
To Select Programs in the VoFX:
1) After you power up, use the Data wheel to scroll through the Programs. As
you scroll, the effect group and footswitch LEDs turn on and off. These LEDs
indicate which effects are used in each Program, and which Program in the
Bank is selected.
There are 13 effect groupings printed on the front panel of the VoFX. 9 are
digital effect groups (delay, reverb, etc.) , and 4 cover the preamp section
(compression, Mic Driver, EQ). Each group has its own LED that indicates
the status of each group.
If the Effect LED is lit continuously, an effect in the indicated group is active. If
the LED is not lit, no effects in the group are active. If the LED is flashing, edit
mode is active, and effects in the group can be selected using the Data wheel.
Directly below each vertical group are the <Effect Selector buttons>. These but-
tons allow you to select and/or bypass effects in the VoFX. The following things
happen when you use the Effect Selector buttons:
• When you select a bypassed effect, its group LED begins flashing and the dis
play shows two dashes, indicating that the effect is selected but bypassed.
(Pressing the Select button again activates the effect.)
• When you select an active effect, its group LED begins flashing and the dis
play shows the number of the currently selected effect. (Pressing the button
again bypasses the effect.)
When lit, the User LED below the display indicates that the current Program is a
User Program. When the LED is not lit, the current Program is a permanent
Factory Program.
Using The Footswitches
The VoFX's pedalboard consists of four footswitches: the far right footswitch is
the Bank selector, and the remaining three are Program selectors.
A Bank is a group of three Programs. There are 10 User Banks in the VoFX,
each with 3 Programs for a total of 30 User Programs. There are also 30 Factory
Programs that can be selected using the Data wheel only. User Programs in any
of the Banks can be recalled in one of two ways:
• by pressing the Bank select footswitch, followed by footswitch 1, 2, or 3.

• by turning the Data wheel in Performance mode.
To select Programs using the footswitches:
1) After you power up, the VoFX defaults to Performance mode. Select a Bank by
pressing the Bank selector footswitch. The display shows the selected bank
number on the left side of the display and a dash on the right. The display
might look something like this:
2) Press footswitch 1, 2, or 3. The dash in the display changes to show the
number of the Program you selected. The display might look something like
this:
NOTE: If a new Program number is not selected within 5 seconds after pressing
the Bank select button, the display returns to its previous setting.
Editing Programs
As you become more familiar with the VoFX, you may find that you need to
modify certain Programs to better fit your needs. Fortunately, the VoFX is flexi-
ble enough to give you everything you need without being difficult to program.
The following procedure is an example of how to modify your Programs.
Suppose that a Program which has a 100 ms mono delay, a medium chorus,
noise gate, EQ, Mic Driver, and compression sounds close to what you want, but
you want a 300 ms delay with low feedback instead. Here's how to change it:
1) Use the Data wheel, or the Bank and Program selector footswitches to select
the desired Program.
2) Press the Delay effect group button. The Delay group Status LED begins
flashing and the display reads:
11
23
2-

Signal Processing
8
Signal Processing
3) Look at the front panel Delay groupings to locate the effect you want. In
this case, you'll see that the 300 ms mono delays can be found between 41 and
49 in the Echo(not Multi-Delay) Group.
4) Use the Data wheel to scroll until the the display reads:
NOTE: When you change the selected Parameter from the stored value, a deci-
mal point appears in the bottom right corner of the display and the Store LED
lights.
That's it! You can manipulate any effect setting in the VoFX by pressing the
associated Effect selector button on the front panel and turning the Data wheel.
The Effect Group buttons also toggle the effects on and off with each successive
press of the button.
When you're editing Programs, be sure to pay attention to the flashing Status
LEDs. This helps you keep track of where you are in the menus.
IMPORTANT: If you want to store your custom Program so you can use it later,
follow the procedure below.
Storing Programs
The VoFX helps you remember whether or not you've stored the Program
you're working on by lighting the Store LED under the bottom right corner of
the display when the selected Program has been edited.
Remember that if you change any settings in a Program, you have to store the
Program into a User memory location. Otherwise, all your changes will be lost.
To store a Program into a memory location:
1) Press the Store button. The Store LED begins flashing and the User LED
lights (if not lit already).
2) Use the Data wheel to select the User location where you want to store the
Program.
41.
Signal Processing
VoFX manual 7/25/00 11:04 AM Page 8

3) Press the Store button again to store the Program in the location you select
ed.
After the storing procedure is complete, the VoFX returns to normal operation
at the new Program location.
NOTE: Factory Programs can't be overwritten. When you modify a factory
Program and store it in memory, the Program is stored in the corresponding
number location in the User Program section.
Grouping Programs
If you have Programs that you like and would like to keep them together in the same Bank, the VoFX will allow
you to store any program in any bank
To perform this function, simply move to the desired program, either using the Data Wheel or the
Footswitches, and then press the <Store> button once. The <store> LED will begin to flash. Now use the
<Data Wheel> and turn it until the desired location for that Program appears in the display. Once there,
simply press the <Store> button again and that program will now be in that location.
Bypassing
The VoFX's bypass functions are very simple.
To bypass individual effects:
1) From Performance mode, decide which effect you want to bypass and press its
Select button twice. The display reads:
To bypass programs:
From Performance mode, press and hold the <Bypass> footswitch and the LED will light indicating that the
currently selected program is now bypassed.

About the VOFX's Effects
The VoFX has an extensive library of effects that cover virtually every possible need.
Because they are so numerous, we have designed the following charts to give you as
much relevant information as possible while omitting tedious or obvious details
about each effect's setting. For example, Compressors, Detuners, and Pitch Shifters
are not shown because their effect names are self explanatory.
The following pages give listings of the VoFX effect menu:
MIC DRIVERS
The VoFX provides you with 3 different distortion types (Mic Clip, Mic Saturation
and Mic Overdrive).
The Distortion types have different gain settings and these can be changed to your
desired settings.
EQUALIZERS
The 2-band Equalizer in the VoFX offers LOW Eq (1K Hz) and HIGH eq (3K Hz) frequencies.
Both of the EQs are adjustable in 2db increments. These can be adjusted from -12dB cut, to 12dB boost.
CHORUS
A chorus works by splitting the input signal into 2 paths. One path remains uneffected, while the other is delayed and
the pitch is modulated slightly. Both are then mixed back together to produce lush, thickening effects or wild pitch
modulation. All chorus effects in the VOFX are stereo effects.
Chorus # 1 2 3 4

Slow .10Hz/10 .15Hz/15 .10Hz/15 .15Hz/20
Medium .25Hz/10 .35Hz/15 .25Hz/15 .30Hz/20
Fast 2.0Hz/3 3.5Hz/2.5 2.0Hz/3 3.5Hz/2
FLANGERS
A flanger is like a chorus with the exception that part of the effected signal is returned back into the input. This is
known as feedback. Flanger settings with larger feedback settings will create more apparent “jet airplane“ type
effects.
Flanger # 1 2 3 4

PHASERS
Phasers, like flangers, split the input signal into 2 paths. One path remains uneffected, while the other is modulated
in and out of phase. When this is combined with the original, part of the signal is returned back to the input
(feedback). Increased feedback settings can produce very spacey sounds, reminiscent of late 60’s and 70’s music.

Fast .90Hz/60 1.0Hz/70 1.5Hz/75 2.0Hz/80
TREMOLO
The Tremolo modulates the level of the signal. This effect was offered in the vintage amplifiers of yesterday, but now
it has become more popular than ever. The VOFX offers 9 tremolo speeds ranging from 2.0Hz - 9.0Hz
RING MODULATOR
The Ring Modulator produces mathematically related sounds rather than harmonically related sounds. This is useful
for producing atonal and percussive-type effects.
The Ring Modulator settings in the VoFX range from 80Hz-1000Hz.
PIXELLATOR
The Pixellator takes the input signal and undersamples it to create a raw digital version of the original. This effect has
become very popular in Industrial, Rap, and Techno music.

KARAOKE
There is no need to hire a whole band anymore with VoFX Karaoke function. The VoFX offers you the unique ability
to remove unwanted vocals in recordings and then play the rest of the music back through the unit on most CDs and
Tapes. This can be accomplished by performing the following procedure:
Insert the CD player in the Karaoke jack (located on the rear panel), and select the <Noise gate - Karaoke> effect.
Now use the <Data Wheel > and turn until Vocal cancel presets (11 through 20) are present. Presets 11 through 20
have the same Noise gating features as presets 1 through 10, but within these presets, the VoFX will automatically
cancel out the Left, Center or Right signal, thus removing the pre-recorded vocal track.
FACTORY RESET
If you want, the memory of the VoFX can be reset to its original factory condition.
This procedure erases all User Programs in memory.
To reset the VoFX memory to its original factory condition:
WARNING! PERFORMING THIS FUNCTION WILL DESTROY ALL USER-
PROGRAMMED DATA!
