1. General Description
The Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS is a set of hardware boards, software tools, and applications designed to enable
the rapid development of media-centric PCI Express applications. It contains one Z3-DM8168-MOD-3x
System on Module card, one Z3-DM8168-APP-2x application board with PCI Express interface, as well as
bundled software with all of the necessary components for the user to quickly develop their own advanced
multimedia, graphics, and DSP applications.
The Z3-DM8168-APP-2x application board includes 1 HDMI 1080p60 input, 1 Component / Analog Audio
input, and 1 HDMI 1080p60 output. It includes a 2-lane PCIe interface that can plug into a 4-lane or 16-
lane PCIe slot or a 1-lane PCIe slot with open back. It has been proven on an ASUS motherboard (model
P8H67-M, PRO/CSM, revision 3.0).
In order to make custom hardware and software development easier, the Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS is designed so
that standalone operation is possible. The system can then be developed and tested independently from
any hosts. To that effect, the DM8168-APP-2x board contains independent power, serial console, USB,
Ethernet and SATA jacks providing a direct connection to these DM8168 peripherals. Figure 1 below shows
the Z3-DM8168-APP-2X and its inputs/outputs.

The Z3-DM816X-MOD-3X is a compact OEM module which supports H.264 High Profile encode/decode at up
to two channels of 1080p at 60 fps (frames per second). The Z3-DM8168-MOD-3X features a unique
expansion interface comprised of five high density connectors providing access to most of the interface
signals available from the DM8168 processor. Figure 2 below shows the Z3-DM8168-MOD-3X System on
Module:
The Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS software is based on the Linux OS. The kit comes with all of the low-level
resources such as the Linux kernel, u-boot, tool chain and starter file system pre-integrated and
configured. There is no need to port or integrate OS functions, media functions etc. The software bundle
also contains tools to allow the development of high-level applications using hardware-accelerated video
processing, DSP, and graphics. Those customers that license the optional source code package can also
receive source code for Z3’s demonstration applications, providing an ideal starting point for custom
applications.

3. Untarring and Building the Sample Code
3.1 Preparing the Linux Environment
Prior to building the Z3 sample code, certain modules are required. In Ubuntu 10.x or later, the following
command can be used to get the required modules:
sudo apt-get install bison flex mtd-utils liblzo2-dev uuid-dev zlib1g-dev
libpcre3-dev autoconf autoconf-archive automake automake1.9 automake1.9-doc
libtool libtool-doc
In Fedora, the command would be:
sudo yum install bison flex mtd-utils mtd-utils-ubi lzo-devel libuuid-devel
pcre-devel automake automake17 automake14 autoconf libtool
If you are running a 64-bit OS, it may be necessary to install some 32-bit libraries for the cross-compiling
toolchain. You can determine whether your OS is 64-bit by using the “uname –p” command. A 64-bit OS
will return “x86_64,” while a 32-bit OS will return “i386”, “i586”, or “i686”.
For 64-bit Ubuntu, you can get the necessary libraries by typing:
# sudo apt-get install ia32-libs
For 64-bit Fedora, you can type:
# sudo yum install glibc.i686
3.2 Making the Directories and Running the Make Script
The software provided will allow you to re-create the pre-installed software of the Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS
starting from the included source code.
On a PC running Linux, create a directory where the released materials are going to be located:
# mkdir /home/z3/z3-netra
Copy the released tar archive to that directory:
# cp SW-6E1-00023-01_DM8168-PCI-RPS-20130702.tar.bz2 /home/z3/z3-netra
Untar the archive:
# tar -xvjf SW-6E1-00023-01_DM8168-PCI-RPS-20130702.tar.bz2
Note: Untarring could take 5 to 10 minutes.
Then go into the directory just created and run the build script:
# cd z3-netra-DM8168-PCI-RPS-20130702
# ./makeall.sh
Note: Building can take around 30-40 minutes. You will also need to type in the sudo password a few
times throughout the build.

The outcome of the build process should be newly created image files in the images directory. You can
confirm this by doing the following:
# cd images
# ls -alt

5. Running the Software – Encode
This section gives step-by-step instructions on using the Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS to stream 1080p or 1080i video
to VLC running on your PC.
5.1 Set up the HD Source
(1) Select an HD source with HDMI non-HDCP output (in Z3’s testing, the Brite-View BV-5005HD is used).
-Power on the HD Source
-Connect HDMI to a monitor
-Set the HD Source to 1080p or 1080i output
-Select content you would like to stream
5.2 Connect the board
For these steps, please refer to Figure 3.

(2) Connect the supplied 2.5mm serial cable and NULL modem adapter to your PC.
(3) Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and connect it to HDMI In of the board.
(4) Connect the Ethernet
The next step is to set up a terminal to view the activity of the board …
5.3 Set up the terminal window
(5) If you are running from a Windows PC, run TeraTerm. Select “Setup – Serial Port” and set the
following:
Port: Whichever serial port the port is connected to
Baud Rate: 115200
Data: 8-bit
Parity: None
Stop: 1-bit
Flow Control: None
(6) If you are running from Linux, type:
# sudo minicom –s
And then configure by doing the following:
-Select “Serial Port Setup”
-Ensure the right Serial Device is specified (typically “/dev/ttyUSB0”)
-Set option E (“Bps/Par/Bits”) to 115200 8N1
-Press <return>
-Select “Exit”

5.4 Power on the board
(7) Connect the 12V power supply and turn on the switch. If all is configured properly, you should see the
board booting up within the terminal window. After about a minute, you will see the Z3-DM8168-PCI-
RPS Main Menu:
Note the local IP address and netmask (in this example, it is 192.168.81.68 and 255.255.0.0). This is the IP
address of the board. You will need this later to access the web interface.

5.5 Ensure your PC has a proper IP address
(8) To be able to communicate with the board, the PC that you are communicating from needs to have at
least the same first 2 parts of the IP address. For example, if the board has an IP address of
192.168.81.68, your PC would need to have an address of 192.168.x.y, where x.y is anything but 81.68
(and not conflicting with whatever is on your current network). Ensure that this is the case. If
necessary, use the “P” and “Q” options in the RPS menu to modify the address / network mask of the
board to conform to your network. Note that the first 2 parts being the same are based on a netmask
of 255.255.0.0. If netmask were 255.255.255.0, then the first 3 parts of the IP address would have to
be the same.
After you are done, make note of the address you set your PC to. This will be important in the
streaming step.
5.6 Run the Web Interface to configure encode
(9) In your PC, run a web browser (for best results, Z3 recommends FireFox or Chrome). In this browser,
type the IP address of the board noted in step (7) (for example, if the default value is used, it would
be http://192.168.81.68). After about 3 seconds, the Encoder Settings menu should come up:

(10) In this menu, confirm that Video Source is set to “HDMI1” and Audio Source is set to “Automatic”.
(11) Set “Output Format” to “MPEG-2 TS” and “Dest IP Address” to the IP address of your PC (in this
example, 192.168.0.6) Also make note of the value of “Dest Port” (should be 8888 by default):
(12) Click “Start”. After about 6 seconds, the status should change from “idle” to “Running.”

5.7 Run VLC to view stream
(13) Run VLC on your PC (version used in testing at Z3: 2.05)
(14) Select Media – Open Network Stream. In the box, type “udp://@192.168.0.6:8888”, where
“192.168.0.6” is the IP address of your PC, and 8888 is the value of “Dest Port” noted in step (11).
(15) Press “Enter.”
(16) You should now see video streaming to VLC:

5.8 Streaming RTP
Once you have UDP streaming, it is relatively simple to change to RTP streaming. All that is needed are a
change of settings and an SDP file (an example file is provided with the software release from Z3). To
stream using RTP, do the following steps:
(15) In the Encoder settings tab, click on “Stop” to stop the current encoding session.
(16) Change “Output Format” from “MPEG-2 TS” to “RTP” (see Figure 6).
(17) Change “Dest IP Address” to “225.1.2.3”
(18) Confirm that “Dest Port” (see Figure 6) is “8888” (this will be important for the VLC configuration).
(19) Click “Start” to start streaming
(20) Copy the “z3-netra-multicast.sdp” file received from Z3 to your PC.
(21) Open VLC. Select “Media – Open File” and select the “z3-netra-multicast.sdp” file you just copied.
(22) You should then see RTP video streaming on VLC:

5.9 Showing encode passthrough on a screen (Optional)
To see what is being encoded on a monitor, simply connect that monitor to HDMI Out of the Z3-DM8168-
PCI-RPS (see Figure 10). Once you do this, you should see the video going into the encoder on the monitor.
5.10 Adjusting for latency and quality
For latency, the key parameters to work with are Video Burst Size and B-frame Interval.
Video Burst Size defines the number of milliseconds of buffering the encoder has to work with. The higher
this value, the more buffers it has to work with and the more time it has to “smooth things out” for
challenging content. However, a higher value also causes latency to increase accordingly. To minimize
latency, this value should be set to the lowest possible value. The lowest value Z3 recommends is 150.
B-frames improve the quality of the picture, but they also increase the latency by 1 frame time. To
minimize latency, the number of B-frames should be set to 0 (B-frame Interval should be set to “1”).
Figure 11 shows the suggested values for Video Burst Size and B-frame Interval for 3 common use cases:

6. Running the Software – Decode
The Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS can also be used to decode streams. This section describes how to quickly get
decode up and running. A second Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS is required in these instructions. If the user has only
one Z3-DM8168-PCI-RPS, they can also try using an alternate source for the video stream. In that case, the
decoder settings may have to be adjusted.
6.1 Connect the Decoder board
(1) Connect the supplied 2.5mm serial cable and NULL modem adapter to your PC.
(2) Take the HDMI cable connected to the monitor and connect it to HDMI Out of the RPS.
(3) Connect the Ethernet. Make sure the Ethernet is connected to a hub/router that is also connected to
the Encoder board and PC.
(4) Configure the PC terminal program as was done in steps (5)/(6) in Running the Encoder (Section 5.3).
(5) Connect the 12V power supply and turn on the power switch. The Decoder board should power up and
you should see the serial interface menu.

As shipped the Decoder board will have the same IP address as the Encoder board (192.168.81.68). To be
able to work on the same system, one of the boards should have a modified IP address. In this example we
will change the Decoder board IP address to 192.168.81.67. To do this, perform the following steps:
(6) In the serial menu, type “X” to exit the serial menu.
(7) This should take you to the linux prompt. From here type “fw_setenv ipaddr 192.168.81.67”:
/opt/z3 # fw_setenv ipaddr 192.168.81.67
(8) Then reboot the system by typing “reboot –f”:
/opt/z3 # reboot -f
(9) You should then see the Decoder board reboot. In the serial menu, you can verify the new IP address
has taken effect:
(10) In your PC, run a web browser (for best results, Z3 recommends FireFox or Chrome). In this browser,
type http://192.168.81.67. After about 3 seconds, the Encoder Settings menu should come up. You
will change this later to operate as a Decoder. But first, let’s go back to the Encoder and set up the
