Overview
TheDolby®DP570providesunprecedentedcontrolandreferencemonitoringforthe
creationanddeliveryofDolbyDigitalandDolbyEsurroundsoundaswellasmetadatafor
DTVandDVDs.
TheDP570MultichannelAudioToolsimplifiesthepreparationofcontentforDolbyEand
DolbyDigitalencoding.Itsabilitytocontrolandconfigurethemonitoringenvironment
anditsabilitytosetandeditmetadataparametersmakesitakeytoolforpostproduction,
DVD,anddigitaltelevisionfacilities.Youcanmonitorexactlywhattheconsumer
ultimatelyhearsinrealtime,withouttheneedtodecodeandreencodematerial.
TheconvenientinterfaceletsyoutakefulladvantageoftheaudiometadatathatDolby
Digitalbitstreamsdelivertoconsumerdecoders,ensuringthathomelistenershear
programsexactlyasoriginallyintended.TheDP570enablestheusertocreatenew
metadata,andtomodifyanypreviouslygeneratedmetadata.Itsbuilt‐inLeq(A)meter
providesthecrucialabilitytodetermineandsetthedialoguenormalization(dialnorm)
value.TheDP570outputsmetadataasaseparatedatastream,tobecombinedlaterwith
themultichannelaudioinaDolbyEorDolbyDigitalencoder.

multichannelmonitoringfacilities.Withtheadditionofthehigh‐performance24‐bitCat.
No.548AnalogOptionCard,independent5.1‐channel,two‐channel,andmonooutputs
areavailabletofeedthreeseparatespeakersystems.Thecardalsogivesuserscontrolover
levels,channelmutes,andchannelsolosthroughamastervolumecontrol,speakertrim
controls,andaninputforaconsolesolobus.
AnadditionalinputandintegratedDolbyProLogic®IIandProLogicdecodersallow
propermonitoringofLt/Rtsourcesanddownmixesfromallotherinputs.

DigitalaudioinputontheDP570isviafourfemaleBNCconnectors,allowingatotalof
eightchannels.TheemulatorsectionoftheDP570,liketheDP571,requirestheinput
channelassignmenttoconformtoafixedSMPTE320Mdefinitionbasedupontheprogram
configurationselected.Sincepreviouslyrecordedmaterialmayarriveinformatsthatdo
notmatchthechosenprogramconfiguration,theDP570providestheabilitytoreroutethe
inputchannelstomatchtheexpectedconfiguration,allowingotherequipmenttobesent
thecorrectchannelassignment.
Theemulatorsectionprovidesthebulkoftheaudioprocessing,includingapplicationof
metadata,downmixing,andProLogicdecoding.Allpossiblelisteningoptionsallowedby
consumerdecodersareprovidedintheemulator(fromhigh‐endhometheaterstomono
TVsets).Notethattheinputstotheemulatorsectionmaybemultiple,unrelatedchannels
buttheoutputsarereferredtoasspeakerchannelsandrepresentonlytheactiveprogram
(theprogramcurrentlybeingworkedonormonitored).Oncetheinputchannel
configurationhasbeenset,theselectedactiveprogramappearsintheappropriatespeaker
channelsirrespectiveoftheprogramʹsappearanceontheinputchannels,thereby
simplifyinginstallationandintegrationintoexistingmultichannelmonitoring
environments.
Theemulatorsectionisfollowedbythebassmanagementsection,whichprovidesthe
abilitytoroutelowfrequenciestotheappropriatespeakerchannels.Theoutputofthebass
managementsectionissenttothedigitalaudio(emulator)outputsaswellastheanalog
monitorsection(iffitted).

1.4.1 Use in DVD Mastering
ADVDauthoristypicallypreparingmixedaudioforwritingtotheDVD:generating
metadata,verifyinglevels,andauditioningdownmixes.Thisprocessisdescribedindetail

1.4.2 Use in Digital Television
Here’sanexampleoftheprocessflowinDTV:
Inabroadcasttruckparkedoutsideafootballstadium,theprogrammixerchoosesthe
appropriatemetadatafortheaudioprogrambeingcreated.Theresultingaudioprogram,
togetherwithmetadata,isencodedasDolbyEdataandsenttothetelevisionstationvia
fiber,microwave,orothertransmissionlink.ThisprocessisdiscussedindetailinUsingthe
DP570inLiveRemoteBroadcastonpage 47.
Atthereceivingendofthistransmission,theDolbyEstreamisdecodedbacktobaseband
audioandmetadata.Theaudioprogramandthemetadataaremonitored,altered,or
re‐createdasotherelementsoftheprogramareaddedinpreparationforbroadcast.This
processisdiscussedindetailinUsingtheDP570inPostproductiononpage 53.
Thisnewaudioprogram/metadatapair,reencodedasDolbyEdata,leavesthe
postproductionstudioandpassesthroughthetelevisionstationtoMasterControl,where
manyincomingDolbyEstreamsareonceagaindecodedbacktotheirindividualbaseband
digitalaudio/metadataprograms.Theaudioprogram/metadatapairthatisselectedtoair
issenttothetransmissionDolbyDigitalencoder,whichencodestheincomingaudio
programaccordingtothemetadatastreamassociatedwithit,therebysimplifyingthe
transmissionprocess.ThisprocessisdiscussedindetailinUsingtheDP570inMaster
Controlonpage 57.
Finally,theDolbyDigitalsignalisdecodedintheconsumer’shome,withmetadata
providingtheinformationforthatdecodingprocess.Throughtheuseofmetadata,the
mixerinthetruckhasbeenabletocontrolthehomedecoderforthesportingevent,while
segmentssuchasnewsbreaks,commercials,andstationIDsaresimilarlydecoded,each
usingitsownmetadata.

Dolby®professionalaudioproductsaredesignedtooperatewithinatemperaturerangeof
5°Cto45°C.Theyusenaturalconvectioncoolingandthereforeshouldnotbemounted
directlyaboveanyheat‐generatingequipment.TheDP570hasventholesinthefrontand
backoftheunit,andcanbeplaceddirectlyaboveorbelowotherrack‐mountedgear.

TheDP570containsa90–264VAC,50–60Hz,auto‐sensingpowersupply,40Wmaximum;

theunitissixfeetlong.
2.4 Installing the Remote Software
OncepowerisappliedtheDP570willdisplaythemainstatusscreen.Westrongly
recommendthatyoucontinueontoinstalltheremotemanagementsoftware.
DolbyRemote570providesquickaccesstotheDP570ʹsfunctionsincludingsomethatare
notavailablefromtheDP570front‐panelinterface.
UseofDolbyRemote570allowstheDP570tobelocatedinanotherroomoratadistance
fromtheoperator.WhileDolbyRemote570isinoperation,theRemoteLEDonthefront
paneloftheDP570islitandaccesstothesetupmenuviathefront‐panelbuttonsis
disabled.

SimplyextracttheZIPfiletoafolderonthelocalmachine,andthenclicktheexecutableto
beginusingtheapplication.
Note:TheRS‐232specificationlimitsserialcablelengthto50feet.Usinglowcapacitance
cablescan,however,extendthislimitupto147feet.Refertothespecificationfor
exactinformation.

Theremoteresponsefromtheunitisfastestat115,200baud,sowerecommendusingthat
rateifpossible.Theunitdoessupportslowercommunicationrates.Theunitaddressis
onlyimportantwhenmorethanoneDP570isattachedtothesameCOMport.Contact

Youcanchangethedefaultremoteoperationsettingsfromtheunitfrontpanelonthe
