Chapter 1
Overview
TheDolby®DP570providesunprecedentedcontrolandreferencemonitoringforthe
creationanddeliveryofDolbyDigitalandDolbyEsurroundsoundaswellasmetadatafor
DTVandDVDproduction.
TheDP570MultichannelAudioToolsimplifiesthepreparationofcontentforDolbyEand
DolbyDigitalencoding.Itsabilitytocontrolandconfigurethemonitoringenvironment
anditsabilitytosetandeditmetadataparametersmakesitakeytoolforpostproduction,
DVD,anddigitaltelevisionfacilities.Youcanmonitorexactlywhattheconsumer
ultimatelyhearsinrealtime,withouttheneedtodecodeandreencodematerial.
TheconvenientinterfaceletsyoutakefulladvantageoftheaudiometadatathatDolby
Digitalbitstreamsdelivertoconsumerdecoders,ensuringthathomelistenershear
programsexactlyasoriginallyintended.TheDP570enablestheusertocreatenew
metadata,andtomodifyanypreviouslygeneratedmetadata.Itsbuilt‐inmeterprovides
thecrucialabilitytodetermineandsetthedialoguenormalization(dialnorm)value.The
DP570outputsmetadataasaseparatedatastream,tobecombinedlaterwiththe
multichannelaudioinaDolbyEorDolbyDigitalencoder.
1.1 Analog Monitoring Capabilities
TheDP570isparticularlyusefulinconjunctionwithaudioconsoleslackingadequate
multichannelmonitoringfacilities.Withtheadditionofthehigh‐performance24‐bitCat.
No.548AnalogOutputCard,independent5.1‐channel,2‐channel,andmonooutputsare
availabletofeedthreeseparatespeakersystems.Thecardalsogivesuserscontrolover
levels,channelmutes,andchannelsolosthroughamastervolumecontrol,speakertrim
controls,andaninputforaconsolesolobus.
AnadditionalinputandintegratedDolbyProLogic®IIandProLogicdecodersallow
propermonitoringofLt/Rtsourcesanddownmixesfromallotherinputs.
1.2 Remote Control Capabilities
TheDP570containsextensiveGPI/Ocontrolandincludesasoftwareremoteapplication
forusewithaWindows®‐basedPC.TheoptionalCat.No.549GPI/OControllerprovides
keyremotecontrolfunctions.
1.3 Principles of Operation
UntiltheDP570,theonlywaytoheartheeffectofmetadataonaudioduringmasteringwas
topasstheaudiothroughtheDolbyDigitalencode/decodechain.Thisprocedurecouldnot
beachievedinrealtimeandofferedanunwieldyinterface.TheDP570providesthis
functioninrealtimebyapplyingmetadataparameterstobasebandPCMaudio.This
emulationfunctionallowsyoutopreviewtheeffectsofdownmixing,settingdialogue

level,ProLogicdecoding,andtheotherfunctionscontrolledbymetadataandexperienced
byconsumers.TheDP570’sconvenientanduser‐friendlyinterfacesimplifiesmultichannel
audioproductionandmastering.
Figure 1‐1showstheaudiopathoftheDP570brokenintomajorfunctionalblocks.Features
thatcontroltheoperationofablockareconnectedtoitbyadottedline.
DigitalaudioinputontheDP570isviafourfemaleBNCconnectors,allowingatotalof
eightchannels.TheemulatorsectionoftheDP570,liketheDP571,requirestheinput
channelassignmenttoconformtoafixedSMPTE320Mdefinitionbasedupontheprogram
configurationselected.Sincepreviouslyrecordedmaterialmayarriveinformatsthatdo
notmatchthechosenprogramconfiguration,theDP570providestheabilitytoreroutethe
inputchannelstomatchtheexpectedconfiguration,allowingotherequipmenttobesent
thecorrectchannelassignment.
Theemulatorsectionprovidesthebulkoftheaudioprocessing,includingapplicationof
metadata,downmixing,andProLogicdecoding.Allpossiblelisteningoptionsallowedby
consumerdecodersareprovidedintheemulator(fromhigh‐endhometheaterstomono
TVsets).Notethattheinputstotheemulatorsectionmaybemultiple,unrelatedchannels
buttheoutputsarereferredtoasspeakerchannelsandrepresentonlytheactiveprogram
(theprogramcurrentlybeingworkedonormonitored).Oncetheinputchannel
configurationhasbeenset,theselectedactiveprogramappearsintheappropriatespeaker
channelsirrespectiveoftheprogramʹsappearanceontheinputchannels,thereby
simplifyinginstallationandintegrationintoexistingmultichannelmonitoring
environments.
Theemulatorsectionisfollowedbythebassmanagementsection,whichprovidesthe
abilitytoroutelowfrequenciestotheappropriatespeakerchannels.Theoutputofthebass
managementsectionissenttothedigitalaudio(emulator)outputsaswellastheanalog
monitorsection(iffitted).

1.4 Main Applications
TheDP570canbesuccessfullydeployedwhereverthereisaneedtomonitorthequalityof
digitalaudio,andtoreviewexistingmetadata.Itiscurrentlymostcommonintwo

1.4.1 Use in DVD Mastering
ADVDauthoristypicallypreparingmixedaudioforwritingtotheDVD:generating
metadata,verifyinglevels,andauditioningdownmixes.Thisprocessisdescribedindetail
inChapter 5.
1.4.2 Use in Digital Television
Here’sanexampleoftheprocessflowinDTV:
Inabroadcasttruckparkedoutsideafootballstadium,theprogrammixerchoosesthe
appropriatemetadatafortheaudioprogrambeingcreated.Theresultingaudioprogram,
togetherwithmetadata,isencodedasDolbyEdataandsenttothetelevisionstationvia
fiber,microwave,orothertransmissionlink.Thisprocessisdiscussedindetailin
Chapter 6.
Atthereceivingendofthistransmission,theDolbyEstreamisdecodedbacktobaseband
audioandmetadata.Theaudioprogramandthemetadataaremonitored,altered,or
re‐createdasotherelementsoftheprogramareaddedinpreparationforbroadcast.This
processisdiscussedindetailinChapter 7.
Thisnewaudioprogram/metadatapair,reencodedasDolbyEdata,leavesthe
postproductionstudioandpassesthroughthetelevisionstationtoMasterControl,where
manyincomingDolbyEstreamsareonceagaindecodedbacktotheirindividualbaseband
digitalaudio/metadataprograms.Theaudioprogram/metadatapairthatisselectedtoair
issenttothetransmissionDolbyDigitalencoder,whichencodestheincomingaudio
programaccordingtothemetadatastreamassociatedwithit,therebysimplifyingthe
transmissionprocess.ThisprocessisdiscussedindetailinChapter 8.
Finally,theDolbyDigitalsignalisdecodedintheconsumer’shome,withmetadata
providingtheinformationforthatdecodingprocess.Throughtheuseofmetadata,the
mixerinthetruckhasbeenabletocontrolthehomedecoderforthesportingevent,while
segmentssuchasnewsbreaks,commercials,andstationIDsaresimilarlydecoded,each
usingitsownmetadata.
