The measuring e ectrodes l of the meter are contacting during the
measuring process the materia s to be measured k‚ so that a high
frequency e ectrica fie d j is ab e to pass through the materia . A micro
processor receives the measured signa s and determines from the
measured va ue the percentage water content taking into account the
materia setting group.
Measuring Principle:
The meter works in accordance with the princip e of an opened p ate
capacitor. The capacity of the capacitor depends on the materia -
(die ectric)-constant of the materia in between the p ates k.
Compared with air (er= 1) , for examp e water has a very high die ectric-
constant (er = 80). The water content of a wet materia can therefore be
determined by determining the die ectric constant of this materia .

Description:
The e ectronic moisture meter DS5U is used to determine in a matter of
seconds the moisture in materia s. The average moisture, approx. 3 cm
be ow and 4 cm above the sensor is measured.

Measurement Preparation:
In waste paper ba s j a ho e Ø12mm needs to be dri ed in advance.
The sensor of the meter has to be pricked into the ho e.
Distance to the border k must be at east10 cm.
The pricking in depth l has to be at east 15 cm.


Turn on the Meter:
APush ON/OFF-button, the disp ay shows the adjusted materia group.
Ho d the instrument into the air for automatic zero point measurement
and correction. If the zero point is not in the va id range, the disp ay
shows “ZP-ERROR”.
As ong as the ON/OFF button is pressed, date and time is disp ayed
Are ease the ON/OFF-button, the instrument is now ready for use
with the setting before the ast switching off.

Main Menu
If the main menu is not shown after switching on, press „MODE“ for getting
the main menu. Se ect the wished item with the arrow buttons and press
„OK“

Turn off the Meter:
- push "ON/OFF" button unti the disp ay shows an OFF-text as ong as
the ON/OFF-button is pressed
- re ease "ON/OFF" button, the meter is turned off
After an adjustab e time the instrument switches off automatica y. If
switch off time is adjusted to 0, the automatic turning off is deactivated. In
this case the instrument has to be turned off by pushing the ON/OFF-
button

Material menu
In the first ine the actua se ected materia is shown. There are two different
materia menus, depending on the se ected materia group:
Menu for fixed calibrations:
- material selection: first the materia group, then the materie in that
group can be se ected
- back back to the main menu
Menu for customer specific calibrations
- material selection: first the materia group, then the materie in that
group can be se ected.
- teaching material: through samp e measurements with known
moisture content, a materia ca ibration can be
made, up to 100 teaching measurements are

- change corner point: ca ibration points can be changed.
- change name: The materia text can be changed with the arrow
buttons
Press OK for the next character
Press MODE for ending and storing
- delete: the materia ca ibration data wi be reset to
standard va ues.

Material Teaching
For teaching you need to measure pieces with known moisture content. For each materia more measurements can
be done. From a stored measurements average va es wi be ca cu ated and shown in the second ine.
On the eft the input va ues, on the right the moisture va ues

With the arrow buttons the moisture can be adjusted, by pressing the OK

The teaching a ways can be ended by pressing the MODE button.

A ways the va ue marked with „<“ can be changed with teh arrow buttons,
by pressing „OK“ the next va ue can be changed.
By pressing „MODE“ the changing is aborted
„1:“ is tha starting edge, input 0 = moisture 0,0%, this ncannot be changed
„2:“ here the inpüut va ue can be changed, this is the input va ue at the dry
materia , the moisture va ue shou be stay at 0,0%
„3“ to „4“ the edge points can be changed
„5“ the maximum moisture can be defined
„6“ this corner is a ways input 5000and the moisture of the „5“ point,
this cannot be changed.
After confirming the 5th point va ues bey pressing OK, the changing of the
materia vca ibration is finnished, the main menu wi be disp ayed.
After changing the ca ibration corner points, no addtiona teaching is
possb e for this materia .

Storage possibilities:
storage on, single values:
In the second ine on the eft side “on” is disp ayed, when the
storage is aktiv. Sing e moisture va ues can be stored through
pressing the OK-button. In the third ine on the eft, the number of
stored va ues is disp ayed.
storage on, automatic
In the second ine on the eft side “auto” is disp ayed. A
measurement va ues bigger then 0,0% wi be stored
automatica y, the numbers of measuement per second can be
adjusted. In the third ine on the eft, the number of stored va ues
is disp ayed.
After changing the materia setting, the storage is de eted
automatica y!
Read stored values
In the first window date and time at storage starting, used
materia , and number of stored va ues wi be disp ayed
With pressing the OK-button, the second window appears with
minimum, average and maximum of the stored va ue on the eft
side and a stored va ues on the right side. With the arrow
buttons the disp ay can be scro ed. With pressing the OK-button
the storage window wi be c osed.
With our Software DOSOFT and an USB-cab e stored va ues can
be transferred to a PC. The software can be down oaded from
www.doser.de and it can be used free for 30 days.

The automatic storing can be started stopped through pressing
the
OK-button. “OFF” is the disp ayed in the second ine. Pressing
again the OK-button the automatic storing is on again.

Test Measurements / Calibration
Input Measurement
The input measurement in combination with oven method measurements
needs be done for getting customer specific ca ibration curves.
In the materia menu → “teaching marteria ” or “change corner point” the
customer specific materia ca ibrations can be changed.
Or a ternative y, with more comfort, our Software DOSOFT can be used for
changing and down oading the customer specific materia ca ibrations.

Checking Measuring Quality:
We recommend carrying out regu ar periodica contro ing check measurements, as different oca circumstances
might need different materia adjustments. (recommendation: contro ing measurements by oven drying method.
Oven Drying Method:
The oven drying method is the most acurate way to measure the materia moisture in paper or wood.
We recommend this for testing and ca ibrating of a e ectronic moisture meters.
Short description:
1. For measuring the weights we recommend a ba ance with an measuring range of 200g
and an accuracy of 0,01g
2. For drying you need an oven with adjustab e temperatures of 40, 100 and 104°C
3. Take a probe from wood with a sharp saw, avoid edge parts. For bui ding materia s take a probe with a with a
sharp chise to a depth of approx 3cm. the probe shou d be at east 20g
4. It is very important to take the weight of the first probe immediate y, as air humidity may change the moisture
content. Name of the first weight: wet weight (WW)
5. The probe must be dryed in the oven unti the weight is constant,
the maximum drying temperatures for paper and cardboard : 100 °C (DIN ISO 287)
the maximum drying temperatures for wood: 104 °C (ISO 3130-1975)
the maximum drying temperatures for concrete: 50 °C
the maximum drying temperatures for gipsum: 40 °C
7. The name of the dry weight is DW.
8. The moisture content is ca cu ated with the formu a:

Basic Calibration:
The moisture meter can be tested and ca ibrated with the
test modu e PE50R.
For this procedure the sensors need to be dry and c ean!
Se ect „Ca ibration“ in the main menu aud put in code no 97
1. Zero Point
the zero point on y can be measured and not adjusted. The zerop point
shou d be between 10 and 190. If the measured va ue is above 200, no
zero point wi be measured. Ho d the meter with its sensors free into the
air, both va ues must be equa , wait ti the zero point is stab e and press
the OK-button.
If the zeropoint is out of range, the meter needs to be repaired!
2. Measurement with Test Modu PE50R:
the meter needs to be sticked into the test modu e PE50R.
The ca ibration resu t is shown, additiona the ca ibration factor. This
factor can be changed with the arrow bottons ti the measurement
reusu t is as exact as possib e 200. The factor can be changed between
150 and 255. With pressing the OK-button, the changed ca ibration wi be
stored and the ca ibration procedure finished.
If the ca ibration is not posib e, the meter needs to be repaired.

Battery:
we recommend to a ways use high qua ity batteries,
e.g. a ka ine or ithium 9V b ock batteries.
If the battery is running ow, the disp ay shows “BAT” in the bottom ine.
Change battery:
- open the battery box for examp e with a sma screw driver
- take out the battery
- insert new battery, observing the correct polarity
Attention
In accordance with battery egis ation, a used batteries must be disposed
off in specia battery co ecting bins.
The disposa of o d or used batteries as part of norma waste is not a owed!
