This manual describes the installation and operation of the Sequoia Model 2160 catalytic-equipped wood heater. This heater meets the U.S. Envi-
ronmental Protection Agency’s emission limits for wood heaters sold after July 1, 1990. Under specic test conditions this heater has been shown
to deliver heat at a rate ranging from 10,400 to 31,700 Btu’s/Hr. A Sequoia equipped with an 8” (200mm) ue collar also burns coal. Coal-burning in
the Sequoia is not allowed with the 6” (150mm) ue collar. In addition, the catalytic combustor must be removed before burning coal. In addition to
directions on installation and operation, this manual includes directions on maintenance and assembly.
We recommend that you hire a professional solid fuel stove installer to install your stove, or to advise you on the installation should you attempt to
install it yourself.
The Sequoia has been tested and is listed by Warnock Hersey of Middleton, Wisconsin. The test standards for the Sequoia equipped with a 8” (200
mm) ue collar are ANSI/UL 1482 and ANSI/UL 737 for the United States and CAN/CSA-B366.2 for Canada. The Sequoia equipped with a 6” (150
mm) ue collar is not tested to ANSI/UL 737 and should not be used in conjunction with replace screen. The Sequoia is not listed for installation in
mobile homes.

Before you begin the installation, review your plans to
conrm that:
• Your stove and chimney connector will be far enough
from combustible materials to meet all clearance require-
ments.
• The oor protector is large enough and is constructed
properly to meet all requirements.
• You have obtained all necessary permits from local
authorities.
Your local building ofcial is the nal authority for approving
your installation as safe and for determining that it meets
local and state codes.
The metal label permanently attached to the back of the
stove indicates that it has been tested to current UL and
ULC standards, and gives the name of the testing labora-
tory. Clearance and installation information is also printed
on the label. Local authorities generally will accept the label
as evidence that, when the stove is installed according to
the information on the label and in this manual, the instal-
lation meets codes and can be approved.
Codes vary in different areas, however. Before starting
the installation, review your plans with the local building
authority. Your local dealer can provide any additional
information needed.
For any unresolved questions about installation, refer
to the National Fire Protection Association’s publication
ANSI/NFPA 211-1988 Standard For Chimneys, Fireplaces,
Vents and Solid Fuel Burning Appliances. In Canada, the
equivalent publication is CSA CAN-B365, Installation Code
for Solid Fuel Burning Appliances and Equipment. These
standards are the basis for many national codes. They
are nationally recognized and are accepted by most local
authorities. Your local dealer or your local building ofcial
may have a copy of these regulations.
Important: Failure to follow these installation instructions
may result in a dangerous situation, including a chimney
or house re. Follow all instructions exactly, and do not
allow makeshift compromises to endanger property and
personal safety.
Chimney Types
Your Sequoia must be connected to a sound masonry chim-
ney that meets local codes, a relined masonry chimney that
meets local codes, or to an approved prefabricated metal
chimney. Whatever kind you use, the chimney and chimney
connector must be in good condition and kept clean.
Masonry Chimneys
If you use an existing masonry chimney, it must be inspected
to ensure safe condition before the stove is installed. Your
local professional chimney sweep, building inspector, or re
department ofcial will be able either to make the inspection
or to direct you to someone who can.
An inspection of the chimney must conrm that it has a lin-
ing. Do not use an unlined chimney. The chimney should
also be examined for cracks, loose mortar, other signs of
deterioration, and blockage. Repair any defects before the
chimney is used with your stove.
Unused openings in an existing masonry chimney must
be sealed with masonry to the thickness of the chimney
wall, and the chimney liner should be repaired. Openings
sealed with pie plates or wallpaper are a hazard and should
be sealed with mortar or refractory cement. In the event
of a chimney re, ames and smoke may be forced out of
these unused thimbles.
The chimney should be thoroughly cleaned before use.
A newly-built masonry chimney must conform to the
standards of your local building code or, in the absence
of a local code, to a recognized national code. Masonry
chimneys must be lined, either with code-approved ma-
sonry or pre-cast refractory tiles, stainless steel pipe, or
a code-approved, “poured-in-place” liner. The chimney’s
clean-out door must seal tightly.

Prefabricated Chimneys
A prefabricated metal chimney must be one tested and
listed for use with solid-fuel burning appliances to the
High-Temperature (H.T.) chimney Standard UL-103-1985
(2100°F.) for the United States, and High Temperature
(650°C) Standard ULC S-629 for Canada.
WARNING: Do not use double-wall chimney connec-
tors with the Sequoia unless they have been speci-
cally tested and listed for use with this appliance.
Use of double-wall chimney connectors that have
not been tested and listed for use with the Sequoia
may result in temperatures exceeding the limits
established by the test standards ANSI/UL-1482 or
ULC S627. A potential hazard may result, including
a house re.
DO NOT CONNECT THIS UNIT TO A CHIMNEY
FLUE SERVING ANOTHER APPLIANCE.
Chimney Size
A Sequoia with an 8” (203 mm) ue collar is approved for
venting into a masonry chimney with a nominal ue size
of 8” x 8” (203 x 203 mm), and into a round ue size of 8”
(203 mm). A Sequoia with a 6” (152 mm) ue collar is ap-
proved for venting into a masonry chimney with a nominal
ue size of 8” x 8” (203 x 203 mm), and into a round ue
size of 6” (152 mm).
Whatever the ue collar size, a Sequoia may be vented
into larger chimneys as well. However, chimneys with larger
liners and particularly those with liners larger than 8” x 12”
(203 x 305 mm) may experience rapid cooling of smoke and
reduction in draft, especially if they are located outside the
home. These large chimneys may need to be insulated or
have their ues relined for proper stove performance.
Accessories to help make the connection between stain-
less steel chimney liners and your Sequoia are available
through your local dealer.
Chimney Height
Altitude affects chimney performance. Refer to the chart
below for suggested chimney heights at various altitudes.
Chimney height should be measured form the ue collar
to the top of the chimney. The recommended minimum
chimney height is 16’ (4.9 m).

The chimney should extend at least 3’ (914 mm) above
the highest point where it passes through the roof, and
at least 2’ (610 mm) higher than any part of a building
within 10’ (3 m).

Chimney Connector Guidelines
The chimney connector is the single-wall pipe that connects
the stove to the chimney. The chimney itself is a masonry
or prefabricated structure that encloses the ue. Chimney
connectors are used only to make the connection from the
stove to the chimney.
Do not pass the chimney connector through a combustible
wall or ceiling, or through an attic, a closet or any similar
concealed space. If passage through a combustible wall is
unavoidable, follow the recommendations in the following
section on Wall Pass-Throughs.
Use chimney connector that is 24 gauge steel or heavier,
with a diameter of 8” (203 mm) for an 8” (203 mm) ue
collare or 6” (152 mm) for the 6” (152 mm) ue collar.
Install the chimney connector not less than 18” (457 mm)
from the ceiling. Keep the passage as short and direct as
possible, with no more than two 90° turns. Slope horizontal
runs of connectors upward 1/4” per foot (20 mm per meter)
going from the stove toward the chimney. The recom-
mended maximum length of horizontal run is 3’ (914 mm),
and the total length of chimney connector should be no
longer than 8’ (2.4 m).
In cathedral ceiling installations, extend the prefabricated
chimney downward to within 8’ (2.4 m) of the stove. The
entire chimney connector should be exposed and acces-
sible for inspection and cleaning.
Do not use galvanized chimney connector; it cannot
withstand the high temperatures that can be reached by
smoke and exhaust gases and it may release toxic fumes
under high heat.

Assembling the Chimney Connector
SAFETY NOTE: Always wear gloves and safety goggles
when drilling, cutting or joining sections of chimney
connector.
• Beginning at the ue collar of the stove, assemble the
chimney connector. Insert the rst crimped end into the
stove’s ue collar, and keep each crimped end pointing
toward the stove. Using the holes in the ue collar as
guides, drill 1/8” (3mm) holes in the bottom of the rst
section of chimney connector and secure it to the ue
collar with three #10 x 1/2” sheet metal screws.

NOTE: Special slip pipes and thimble sleeves that form
telescoping joints between sections of chimney connector
are available to simplify installations. They can eliminate
the need to cut individual connector sections. Consult your
local dealer about these special pieces.
Securing the Connector
to a Prefabricated Chimney
Follow the installation instructions of the chimney manufac-
turer exactly as you install the chimney. The manufacturer
of the chimney will supply the accessories to support the
chimney, either from the roof of the house, at the ceiling of
the room where the stove is installed, or from an exterior
wall.
Special adapters are available from your local dealer to
make the connection between the prefabricated chimney
and the chimney connector. The top of such adapters at-
tach directly to the chimney or to the chimney’s ceiling sup-
port package, while the bottom of the adapter is screwed
to the chimney connector.

These adapters are designed so the top end will t outside
the inner wall of the chimney, and the bottom end will t
inside the rst section of chimney connector. Any soot or
creosote falling from the inner walls of the chimney will stay
inside the chimney connector.
Securing the Connector
to a Masonry Chimney
The Sequoia may be connected to either a freestanding
masonry chimney or a masonry replace chimney.
Freestanding Installations
If the chimney connector must pass through a combustible
wall to reach the chimney, follow the recommendations in
the wall pass-through section that follows.
The opening through the chimney wall to the ue (the
“breech”) must be lined with either a ceramic or metal
cylinder, called the “thimble”, which is securely cemented
in place. (Fig. 6) Most chimney breeches incorporate
thimbles, but check to be sure the t is snug and the joint
between thimble and chimney wall rmly cemented.

A special piece called the “thimble sleeve,” slightly smaller
in diameter than the standard connector and most thimbles,
will ease the removal of the chimney connector system for
inspection and cleaning. (Fig. 7) Thimble sleeves should
be available from your local dealer.
To install a thimble sleeve, slide it into the breech until it is
ush with the inner ue wall. Do not extend it into the actual
ue passage, as that could interfere with the draft.
The thimble sleeve should protrude 1-2” (25-50 mm) into
the room. Use furnace cement and thin gasketing to seal
the sleeve in place in the thimble. Secure the chimney
connector to the outer end of the sleeve with sheet metal
screws.

Fireplace Installations -
Above the Fireplace
In this installation, the chimney connector rises from the
stove, turns ninety degrees, and goes back into the re-
place chimney. The liner of the replace chimney should
extend at least to the point at which the chimney connector
enters the chimney. Follow all the guidelines for installing
a chimney connector into a freestanding masonry chimney,
and pay special attention to these additional points:
• Check the stove and chimney connector clearances to
combustible mantel or trim materials. Use the neces-
sary combination of mantel, trim, and connector heat
shields to provide the required clearances. (Fig. 8)
• Double-check connector clearance from the ceiling.
• The replace damper must be closed and sealed to
prevent room air from being drawn up the ue, reducing
the draft. However, it must be possible to re-open the
damper to inspect or clean the chimney.

Fireplace Installations -
Through the Fireplace
If the height of your replace opening is at least 30” (762
mm), you may install a Sequoia through the opening using
a “positive connection” kit available from your local dealer.
These kits ensure a tight t between the stove ue collar
and the chimney ue.
Fireplace installations, whether connected to the ue above
or through the replace opening, have special clearance
requirements to adjacent trim and the mantel. You will nd
the required safe clearances for Sequoia replace instal-
lation on Page 10.
Floor protection requirements also apply to replace instal-
lation. Be sure to review the oor protection requirements
on Page 8.

Wall Pass-Throughs
Whenever possible, design your installation so the connec-
tor does not pass through a combustible wall. If you must
use a wall pass-through in your installation, check with
your building inspector before you begin and construct it
in accordance with local building codes. Also check with
the chimney connector manufacturer for any specic re-
quirements.
Accessories are available for use as wall pass-throughs.
If using one of these, make sure it has been tested and
listed for use as a wall pass-through.
In the United States, the national Fire Protection Associa-
tion (NFPA) has established guidelines for passing chim-
ney connectors through combustible walls. Many building
code inspectors follow these guidelines when approving
installations.
Figure 10 shows one NFPA-recommended method. All
combustible material in the wall is cut away a sufcient dis-
tance from the single-wall connector to provide the required
12” (305mm) clearance for the connector. Any material

Floor Protection
A tremendous amount of heat radiates from the bottom
plate of your Sequoia stove. The oor area directly under
and around the stove will require protection from radiant
heat as well as from stray sparks or embers that may
escape the rebox.
Heat protection is provided through the use of a Dutchwest
Bottom Heat Shield. Spark and ember protection must be
provided by a oor protector constructed with noncombus-
tible material as specied.
Most installations will require that the bottom heat shield be
attached. Only when the stove is placed on a completely
noncombustible surface such as unpainted concrete over
earth may be used without the heat shield.
Even when the bottom heat shield is installed, you must
provide special protection to the oor beneath. For instal-
lation with the heat shield attached, use a noncombustible
oor protector such as 1/4” non-asbestos mineral board or
equivalent, or 24 gauge sheet metal. The oor protector
may be covered with a decorative noncombustible material
if desired. Do not obstruct the space under the heater.
Protection requirements vary somewhat between the United
States and Canada as follows:
U.S. Installations: The oor protector is required under
the stove and must extend at least 16” from the front and
left (loading door) side of the stove, and at least 6” from
the right side and rear. (Fig. 12) It must also extend un-
der the chimney connector and 2” to either side. Refer to
Figure 12 for minimum noncombustible oor protection
dimensions.
To meet these requirements, a oor protector must be at
least 48” wide and 42” deep.
In Canada: a noncombustible oor protector is required
under the heater also. The oor protector must extend 18”
(457 mm) from the front and left (loading door) side of the
stove, and at least 6” (150 mm) from the right side and rear.

used to close up the opening must be noncombustible.
Three other methods are also approved by the NFPA.
These are:
• Using a section of double-wall chimney with a 9” clear-
ance to combustibles.
• Placing a chimney connector pipe inside a ventilated
thimble, which is then separated from combustibles by
6” of berglass insulating material.
• Placing a chimney connector pipe inside a section of
8” diameter, solid-insulated, factory-built chimney, with
2” of air space between the chimney section and com-
bustibles.
In Canada, the Canadian Standards Association has estab-
lished different guidelines. Figure 11 shows one method,
in which all combustible material in the wall is cut away to
provide the required 18” (457 mm) clearance for the con-
nector. The resulting space must remain empty. A ush-
mounted sheet metal cover may be used on one side only.
If covers must be used on both sides, each cover must be
mounted on noncombustible spacers at least 1” (25 mm)
clear of the wall. Your local dealer or your local building
inspector can provide details of other approved methods
of passing a chimney connector through a combustible
wall. In Canada, this type of installation must conform to
CAN/CSA-B365, Installation Code for Solid Fuel Burning
Appliances and Equipment.
NOTE: Do not vent your Sequoia into a factory-built (zero-
clearance) replace. These appliances and their chimneys
are specically designed as a unit for use as replaces.
It may void the listing or be hazardous to adapt them to
any other use.

tor and 2” to either side. Refer to Figure 12 for minimum
noncombustible oor protection dimensions.
In addition, a pad measuring 18” (457 mm) wide by 24” (610
mm) long consisting of 1/2” (13 mm) thick rigid insulation
board with a K value of .23 or less (such as Carborundum
Duraboard LD or Manville Ceraform 126) is also required;
it must be centered and must extend 16” (406 mm) in front
of and 8” (203mm) under the unit. The oor protector may
be covered with a noncombustible decorative material if
desired. Do not obstruct the space under the heater.
To meet these requirements, a oor protector must be 50”
(1270 mm) wide and 44” (1118 mm) deep.
Due to the side loading door, oor protector requirements
call for more protection on the left side than on the right. If
you wish a more balanced look, increase the other side of
the hearth as well. Do not reduce side protection under
any circumstances.
NOTE: In both the United States and Canada, no bottom
heat shield is required when the optional pedestal base is
used in place of the standard legs.
Floor Protection for Fireplace
Do not assume that your replace hearth is completely
noncombustible. Many replace hearths do not satisfy the
“completely noncombustible” requirement because the brick
or concrete in front of the replace opening is supported by
heavy wood framing. Because heat passes readily through
brick or concrete, it can easily pass through to the wood.
As a result, such replace hearths can be a re hazard and
are considered a combustible oor. (Fig. 13)
For all replace installations, follow the oor protection
guidelines described above. Keep in mind that many raised
hearths will extend less than the required clearance from the
front of the heater. In such cases, sufcient oor protection
as described above must be added in front of the hearth to

Wood Framing
satisfy the minimum oor protector requirement from the
front of the stove: 16” (406 mm) in the United States and
18” (457 mm) in Canada.
Hearth rugs do not satisfy the requirement for oor protec-
tion as they are not re proof.
Fireplace installations also have special clearance require-
ments to the side walls, side decorative trim and replace
mantel. Refer to the information on replace and mantel
trim shields in this section.
Keep the Stove a Safe Distance
from Surrounding Materials
Both a stove and its chimney connector radiate heat in all
directions when operating. A safe installation requires that
adequate clearance be maintained between the stove and
nearby combustible materials to ensure that such materials
do not overheat.
Clearance is the distance between either your stove or
chimney connector, and nearby walls, oors, the ceiling,
and any other xed combustible surface. Keep furnishings
and other combustible materials away from the stove as
well. In general, a distance of 48” (1220 mm) must be main-
tained between the stove and moveable combustible items
such as drying clothes, furniture, newspapers, rewood,
etc. Keeping those clearance areas empty assures that
nearby surfaces and objects will not overheat.
Safe Ways to Reduce Clearances
Your stove has specic clearance requirements that have
been established through careful research and testing to
UL and ULC standards.
Clearance requirements have been established to meet
every installation possibility, and they involve the combina-
tion of basic variables:
• When the stove has no listed heat shield
• When the stove has a listed heat shield

Fireplace Installations
A replace installation requires special clearance between
the side of the stove and the right and left walls, between
the side of the stove and the decorative side trim on the
replace face, and between the top of the stove and the
mantel.
Ventilated, noncombustible shields installed on
noncombustible spacers 1” (25 mm) away from the
combustible surface may be used to reduce clearances.
A mantel shield for the Sequoia must be at least 48” (1220
mm) long, centered over the stove. Side trim shields must
extend the full length of the trim.
In addition, a replace installation must observe the oor
protection guidelines discussed previously.
The charts and illustrations that follow depict all
the clearances required for the various installation
congurations of the Sequoia.
• When the wall has no heat shield
• When the wall has a heat shield
In general, the greatest clearance is required when you
locate a stove with no heat shield near a wall with no heat
shield. The least clearance is required when both the
stove and the wall have heat shields. Reducing a stove
clearance may require a listed heat shield on the chimney
connector as well, or a double-wall connector.
Clearances may be reduced only by means approved
by the regulatory authority and in accordance with the
clearances listed in this manual. The charts and sample
installations that follow list all the clearances required for
the various installation congurations of Sequoia.
Wall Shields
One way to reduce clearances is with a wall shield con-
structed of 24 gauge or heavier sheet metal, or of another
noncombustible material such as 1/2” (13 mm) insulation
board such as Durock® or Wonderboard®, or common brick
“laid on at,” with the 3¹⁄₂" (90 mm) side down.
Shields must be spaced out from the combustible surface
1" (25 mm) on noncombustible spacers, as in Figure 14.
The spacers should not be directly behind the stove or
chimney connector.
Air must be able to ow between the wall and the shield. At
least 50% of the bottom 1" (25 mm) of the shield must be
open, and the shield must be open at the top. (Fig. 14)
