DX Engineering ISO-PLUS User manual

Introduction
The DX Engineering ISO-PLUS is an Ethernet filter that joins two RJ-45 connectors together and provides
common mode interference filtering for 160 through 10 meters.
RF interference can creep in to your received signals from a host of things normally
found around the house or radio room. One major area of concern is the RJ-45 cables
used for Ethernet connections between your personal computers, printers, routers,
cable modems, transceivers, (and the list goes on).
RF can creep in from switching power supplies, wall power adapters, touch lamps,
appliances and just about anything near RJ-45 cables. The RF generated internal to
the device is then radiated over the RJ-45 cable. Once RF is in the RJ-45 cable it acts
as an antenna and radiates RF signals that can be picked up by your receiver.
The DX Engineering ISO-PLUS units have no effect on the Ethernet signal levels or speed.
Always use clean power supplies. Linear power supplies are usually better than switching power supplies.
Some switching power supplies that are specifically for amateur radio use usually have extra internal filtering
to avoid causing RF interference in the amateur radio bands. Most wall adapters to not have extra filtering
and can cause significant interference problems.
Proximity of transmitting antennas near internal wiring can cause interference that gets into RJ-45 cables.
Even if the cables are “shielded”, and especially if the shield is terminated at both ends of the cable, then the
shield becomes just another conductor which can receive unwanted signals and reradiate them just as any
other wire in the cable might do.
With the DX Engineering ISO-PLUS units installed you can reduce RF
interference caused by RJ-45 cables from the devices they are plugged into.
Normally installed in pairs - One installed at the RJ-45 Ethernet plug of one
device and the other plugged into the RJ-45 Ethernet plug on the other device.
Be aware that other good RF practices must also be taken around the shack to
eliminate noise interference such as proper grounding, good quality coaxial cable,
tight positive mechanical connections where used and other good RF practices.
The DX Engineering ISO-PLUS units are one more tool that can be used to improve your reception of those
weak signals. “If you can’t hear them, you can’t work them.”
Features
Reduces common mode RF interference on RJ-45 cables
Effective filtering for 160 through 10 meters
Does not effect Ethernet signals or speed
Works with CAT5, CAT5E, CAT6 and CAT6A cables with RJ45 connectors
Provides common mode RF attenuation from 160 meters through 10 meters
Each ISO-Plus comes with one six inch shielded RJ-45 Hook up cable (color may vary)
Note: The ISO-PLUS units are for use with Ethernet cables only. Not to be used on other
products that have an RJ-45 cable such as Microphones, SignaLink units, etc. Additionally,
any cable used that supplies power over Ethernet (POE - Power over Ethernet) will not work -
the ISO-PLUS units do NOT pass DC voltages, they will short the POE to ground.

Common Mode RF Attenuation
The following graphs show the common mode RF attenuation for a typical installation of two DX
Engineering ISO-PLUS units. Graphs show 100 KHz-30 MHz and 100-1.8 MHz to show the noise
attenuation from below 160 meters to just above 10 meters for reference.
