MightyMo/MiniMo User’s Guide 1-1
Part # 400030-C
1
Introduction
The DynaVox MightyMo/MiniMo is a sophisticated augmentative
communication tool with a dynamic, touch screen display that allows
an individual to quickly select words or phrases which are then
spoken by the device. MightyMo/MiniMo devices use recorded
speech.
The MightyMo and MiniMo contain several pre-programmed page
sets developed by a team of speech-language pathologists that
feature communication pages on a wide variety of topics. These
pages make it easy for communicators to initiate and hold
conversations with friends, family, education professionals and
clinicians. Individuals can communicate using one of the built-in page
sets, or create new sequences of communication pages.
The DynaVox MightyMo/MiniMo can be ordered with a choice of
recorded voices - male, female and gender-neutral child (this voice
was chosen at the time of purchase). In addition, individuals also
have the option of recording words, phrases and sentences in their
own voices.
The MightyMo/MiniMo can be tailored to the needs of an individual in
virtually any situation, since it offers a variety of methods for selecting
buttons or other items on the touch screen. The built-in selection
methods include touch selection (an item is selected when touched,
or when touch is removed), switch selection (an item is selected by
activating a switch) and mouse pause (an item is selected by pausing
a computer mouse over it). Each selection method has a variety of
settings to further tailor it to individual needs.
Other user interface features, including speaker volume, screen
brightness, date and time settings, the language in which the menu is
displayed, and which items appear on the title bar at the top of the
touch screen, can also be adjusted to suit the needs of the user.

Chapter 1: Introduction
The MightyMo/MiniMo also includes a universal remote control
module that allows individuals to manage their environment using
electronic signals (including infrared, X-10 and phone commands).
The internal remote control can be used to operate televisions, CD
and DVD players, VCRs, Windows-based PCs and other common
household appliances and consumer electronics with infrared
capabilities. Two different sets of phone controls (GEWA Jupiter and
TASH) enable the device to dial and answer telephones. The
MightyMo/MiniMo can also play sound recordings in .mp3 format, and
can display digital photos and other graphics files in digital format.
The MightyMo/MiniMo device is equipped with hardware interfaces
that allow a variety of external devices to be connected via the USB,
switch, serial, microphone or speaker ports. To facilitate file sharing
and user data backups, the device can be connected to removable
storage devices, such as storage cards and removable USB storage
devices (flash storage).

Terms You Should Know Chapter 1: Introduction
TERMS YOU SHOULD KNOW
This document uses some basic computer terms as well as
vocabulary that is unique to DynaVox MightyMo/MiniMo software. It is
important that you take a few minutes to become familiar with these
terms and their meanings. Reviewing this section now will make it
easier for you to learn about your MightyMo/MiniMo device.
Pages The primary MightyMo/MiniMo communication tool is a page. Pages
can be designed and customized to meet your unique physical, visual
and communicative needs. A page contains a collection of buttons
that represent words, phrases, sentences, behaviors or links to other
pages. A page covers the entire touch screen below the title bar.
MIGHTYMO/MINIMOPAGE
Pages can feature various components:
•Message Window - The Message Window is an area on a page
where a text or symbol message can be composed. When the
Message Window is selected, the device will speak its contents.
The size and location of the Message Window may vary, but
moving from page to page will not delete or alter its contents.
•Tab Control - Tab controls are used to navigate between multiple
layers of buttons on a page. These layers are called panes. The
top of each pane features a tab. A pane is displayed whenever its

1-12 DynaVox Technologies
Chapter 1: Introduction Terms You Should Know
tab is selected. There can be up to six panes in a set of tab
controls.
•Button - A button is a graphic object on a page that can be
selected with a touch, a mouse click or other input device. It may
represent a behavior, a word or even several sentences. A button
may feature a text label and/or a symbol, and can be programmed
to enact specific behaviors when it is selected.
•Label - A label is text that can be placed on a button, tab control
or page. Labels can be used as the title of a page or as an
indication of the vocabulary in a button.
•Symbol - Symbols are pictures that can be used to represent
vocabulary. They can be placed on buttons, tab controls or pages.
DynaVox symbols are called DynaSyms.
•Behavior - A behavior is an action or command that can be
programmed into a button. Many behaviors can be assigned to a
single button, including speaking, sending text to the Message
Window or performing an infrared command. Selecting the button
will launch the behavior(s) assigned to it.
Menus and the Title Bar The DynaVox MightyMo/MiniMo software provides special tools to
help you maintain and customize your device.
TITLE BAR
•Title Bar - The title bar is always displayed at the top of the touch
screen. The title bar features a group of green buttons in the left
corner (Record, Modify, Page Back and Home), bars that show the
remaining disk space and battery power, a window that displays
the date and time, and the blue Setup button.
2Note: For more information on the controls that are available in the title
bar, see Define the Title Bar Contents on page 5-24.
