1. AutopilotIn‐FlightTuningProcedures
FlightTestPreparation
Theflighttestshouldbeconductedonaclear,VFRday.Itisrecommendedthat
clearingturnsbeperformedbeforeexecutingeachprocedure.
Atmanypoints,thepilot’sattentionwillbedividedbetweendocumentation,
configuringSkyView,andmaintainingsituationalawareness.Beforecommencing
theflighttest,ensurethatyouhaveadequatealtitude,clearweather,notraffic,no
obstructionsintheflightpath,greatvisibility,noairspaceconflicts,etc.Ifpossible,
bringsomeonealongonthefirstautopilottestflight.
Ifautopilotbehavior,performance,orinterferencewiththecontrolsiscauseforconcernwhile
flying,rememberthattheautopilotcanbedisconnectedinanyofthefollowingways:
•PresstheDisconnect/CWSbutton
•IfusingtheSIMPLIFIEDcontrols:
oEntertheAPMenu(MAINMENU>APMENU)andpresstheTRK+ALTbutton

Thisproceduretunestherollautopilotservoandthus,theflightcharacteristicsoftheaircraftin
headingholdsandturns.Thisprocedureshouldbeperformedwiththeautopilotrollaxisin
track(TRK+ALT)mode,wherethepurposeoftheautopilotistokeeptheaircraft’sGPSground
trackalignedwiththetrackbug(aswellasholdaltitude).Beforeexecutingthisprocedure:

(TRK)
2. Turnthejoystickeitherwayuntilthetrackbugreads90degreestotheleftorrightof
currentTRKtarget
3. TheaircraftshouldimmediatelybeginturningtowardthenewTRKtarget
5. CheckforROLLSLIPindications
ObservetheautopilotstatusindicatorontheTopBarwhiletheautopilotflies.Ifthe
bannerisshownfrequently,itisanindicationthattherollservoisslippingand
theservotorqueneedstobeincreased.Occasionalslipsduetoturbulenceareacceptable.
IffrequentROLLSLIPSareobserved,disconnecttheautopilotandincreaseROLLTORQUEby
10%(SETUPMENU>AUTOPILOTSETUP>ROLLAXIS>TORQUE).
Ifyouhaveadjustedtherollservotorqueto100%andarestillseeingfrequent
slips,youmayneedtotryahigherstrengthservo(e.g.,ifyouhaveanSV32
installed,tryswappingforanSV42).ContactDynonforassistance.
6. Checkifaircraftisslowtorespond
ObservethespeedatwhichtheautopilotrespondstochangesinTRKsetting.
Iftheautopilotseemstooslowtorespondor“sluggish”,disconnecttheautopilotandincrease
ROLLSENSITIVITYby2(SETUPMENU>AUTOPILOTSETUP>ROLLAXIS>SENSITIVITY).

Ifyouhaveadjustedtherollservosensitivitytoitsmaximumsettingandarestill
observingunacceptablyslowbehavior,contactDynonforassistance.
7. Checkifaircraftis“twitchy”inROLLaxis
Observeiftheflightcontrolstwitchexcessivelyorseemoverlyaggressive.
Ifitdoes,thisisanindicationthattheROLLSENSITIVITYneedstobedecreased.DecreaseROLL
SENSITIVITYby1(SETUPMENU>AUTOPILOTSETUP>ROLLAXIS>SENSITIVITY).Thereisno
needtodisconnecttheautopilotbeforemakingthischange.
Aftermakingthisadjustment,changetheTRKtarget90degreesfromthecurrenttarget,and
checkiftheautopilotovershootsthenewTRKtarget.IfTRKtargetovershootisobserved,
disconnecttheautopilot,increaseROLLGAINby0.2(SETUPMENU>AUTOPILOTSETUP>ROLL
AXIS>GAIN)andstartover.Otherwise,proceedtothenextstep.
8. CheckifaircraftovershootsTRKtarget
Observeiftheautopilotisovershootingorwanderingaroundthetracktarget.Theautopilot
shouldkeeptheopentriangleofthetrackbugcloselyalignedwiththesmall,magentaground
tracktriangle.
IfanovershootisobservedandyoumadearecentROLLGAINadjustment,disconnectthe
autopilot,increaseROLLGAINby0.2(SETUPMENU>AUTOPILOTSETUP>ROLLAXIS>GAIN)
andstartover
Otherwise,ifyouhavenotmadearecentROLLGAINadjustment:
1. IfROLLSENSITIVITYismaxedout,disconnecttheautopilot,increaseROLLGAINby0.2

procedureiscomplete.Ifautopilotrollperformanceisnotacceptable,refertotheRoll

Atthispoint,theautopilotshouldbeappropriatelytunedinthepitchaxisforIASholds.
PerformingnumerousIASclimbsanddescentswillhelpverifythis.Oncesatisfiedwithautopilot
pitchperformance,thisprocedureiscomplete.Ifautopilotpitchperformanceisnotacceptable,
refertothePitchTroubleshootingsectionofthisdocument.
