Operating instructions
ID no. 73018612d
Absolute ENCODER S1, S1D
This product has been designed as:
1. a main index for gas meters; all other operating instructions shall continue to remain in force;
2. a top unit (transducer device) for gas meters equipped with a mechanical index drive (only
available as Encoder S1, S1D index).
The encoder is suitable for connection to a downstream add-on device (e.g. volume conversion
device, data logger or bus system) in explosive atmospheres (see table). For that purpose, a device
connected to the terminal box must have at least the following approval as associated apparatus:
[EEx ia IIC] for the model equipped with a Namur interface
[EEx ib IIC] for the model equipped with an SCR/SCR+ interface
(the M-Bus version is not ATEX approved)
and must meet the following limits:
Ikmax. 20 mA
Uomax. 13.5 V
Pmax (Ik* Uo) max. 270 mW

Place of application
To avoid any incorrect measurements, the ow through the meter must be free from vibrations
and/or free from pulses.
Observance of the specied operating and ambient temperatures is an absolute prerequisite
for the safe operation of the measuring unit and of the index as well as of the pulse generator.
Personnel
These operating instructions are designed for staff members who have sufcient specialized
know-how on account of their professional training and experience in the power and gas supply
sector (in accordance with the DVGW Codes of Practice 492 and 495 or any comparable tech-
nical regulations).
Legal statements
The gas meters, which are designed for custody transfer measurements, must be re-calibrated
at regular intervals (these calibrations are described in the respective operating instructions of
the gas meter). The calibration validity periods applying to meters may differ depending on the
relevant country.
Installation/Connection
Attention: on account of explosion hazards caused by electrostatic discharge, you must
never clean the plastic hood of the index using a dry piece of cloth. Always use a sufciently
moist piece of cloth.
Before starting installation and assembly, please make sure
- the accessories have been checked to detect any shipping damage.
Connection of the top unit to the mechanical drive output of a meter:
-
Slide the top unit equipped with the connecting piece on to the mechanical drive output of the
driving device.
- Secure the unit against removal by means of a self-locking bolt.
- In the case of custody applications (calibration), secure the self-locking bolt by means of a seal.
Connection of the encoder:
- Use a shielded cable and make sure that the pin assignment is correct (see label afxed next
to the cover of the terminal box).
-
The correct polarity of the two-wire connection must be observed in case of the Namur interface.
The M-Bus and SCR/SCR+ interfaces are independent of the polarity.
- It is possible to attach the shielding and connect it (by using a cable) to the meter housing or to the
pipe. However, rst of all you must check whether the applied grounding system enables grounding
on both sides (ground loops and potential differences of the grounding).
- Concerning the double index model, the two bottom terminals determine the direction of the
gas ow.
Bridge between the two bottom terminals (delivery setting): the upper index is activated.
For rotary meter For Encoder add-on index S1D
The two bottom terminals are not bridged: the lower index is activated.
For rotary meter For Encoder add-on index S1D
For pulse output to external devices (e.g. a volume conversion device), a pulse generator (LF
type) can be connected. If required, mount this pulse generator as follows:
- Insert both guides of the IN-S pulse generator into the guiding groove on the index hood until
they lock acoustically (click).
- Assign the connections of the plug in accordance with the pin assignment of the device.
- Use a shielded cable to connect the external device.
Commissioning
With respect to the commissioning of meters equipped with an encoder, the corresponding op-
erating instructions shall be observed.
Customer service
ELSTER’s customer service is ready to assist you in the commissioning, maintenance and instal-
lation of encoders, pulse generators and volume conversion devices.
