About these guidelines
The purpose of these application guidelines is to provide guidance in the application of Copeland
OM(T)E & OL(T)E large outdoor condensing units. They are intended to answer the questions
raised while designing, assembling and operating a system with these products.
Besides the support they provide, the instructions listed herein are also critical for the proper and
safe functioning of the condensing units. Emerson will not guarantee the performance and
reliability of the product if it is misused in regard of these guidelines.
These application guidelines cover stationary applications only. For mobile applications, contact
Application Engineering as other considerations may apply.
1 Safety instructions
Copeland large outdoor refrigeration condensing units are manufactured according to the latest
European and US Safety Standards. Particular emphasis has been placed on the user's safety.
These condensing units are intended for installation in machines and systems according to the
Machinery directive MD 2006/42/EC. They may be put to service only if they have been installed
in these systems according to instructions and conform to the corresponding provisions of
legislation. For relevant standards please refer to the Manufacturer’s Declaration, available at
www.emersonclimate.eu.
These instructions should be retained throughout the lifetime of both the compressor and the
condensing unit.
You are strongly advised to follow these safety instructions.

1.2 Safety statements
Refrigerant compressors must be used in accordance with their intended use.
Only qualified and authorized HVAC or refrigeration personnel are permitted to install,
commission and maintain this equipment.
Electrical connections must be made by qualified electrical personnel.
All valid standards for connecting electrical and refrigeration equipment must be
observed.
The national legislation and regulations regarding personnel protection must be
observed. Use personal safety equipment. Safety goggles, gloves,
protective clothing, safety boots and hard hats should be worn
where necessary.
1.3 General instructions
WARNING
System breakdown! Personal injuries! Never install a system in the field
and leave it unattended when it has no charge, a holding charge, or with the
service valves closed without electrically locking out the system.
System breakdown! Personal injuries! Only approved refrigerants and
refrigeration oils must be used.
WARNING
High shell temperature! Burning! Do not touch the compressor until it has
cooled down. Ensure that other materials in the area of the compressor do not
get in touch with it. Lock and mark accessible sections.
CAUTION
Overheating! Bearing damage! Do not operate compressors without
refrigerant charge or without being connected to the system.
CAUTION
Contact with POE! Material damage! POE lubricant must be handled
carefully and the proper protective equipment (gloves, eye protection, etc.)
must be used at all times. POE must not come into contact with any surface
or material that it might damage, including without limitation, certain polymers,
eg, PVC/CPVC and polycarbonate.
IMPORTANT
Transit damage! Compressor malfunction! Use original packaging. Avoid
collisions and tilting.
The contractor is responsible for the installation of the unit and should check the following points:
Sufficient liquid sub-cooling in the line to the expansion valve(s) to avoid "flash-gas" in the
liquid line;
Sufficient amount of oil in the compressor (in case of long piping additional oil must be
charged).

2 Product description
2.1 Common information about Copeland OM(T)E & OL(T)E condensing units
Emerson has developed the Copeland large outdoor condensing unit of second generation to
meet primarily the demands of the food retail and food service sectors. It is a refrigeration air-
cooled condensing unit that uses the latest Copeland™brand products patented Scroll technology
as the main driver and has electronic protection and diagnostics features built in the compact
chassis. The combination of large condensers and low speed fans allows for particularly quiet
operation.
2.2 EU Ecodesign Directive 2009/125/EC
The European Directive 2009/125/EC with regard to ecodesign requirements for professional
refrigerated storage cabinets, blast cabinets, condensing units and process chillers requires
manufacturers to decrease the energy consumption of their products by establishing minimum
energy efficiency standards. Copeland™brand products condensing units are prepared and
optimized to meet the requirements of the Ecodesign Directive. The integrated variable speed fan
and condenser reduce the noise level and energy consumption significantly. This, combined with
Copeland scroll technology, allows for high-efficiency operation.
For the rated cooling capacity, rated power input and rated COP value please refer to Copeland™
brand products Select software at www.emersonclimate.eu.
These guidelines meet the requirements of Regulation 2015/1095, Annex V, section 2(a).
2.3 Product range
Copeland large outdoor condensing units are released for multiple refrigerants. They have two
cabinet sizes and are equipped with one or two fans. Depending on the compressors in use they
are designed for medium temperature or low temperature refrigeration applications.

The condensing unit nameplate shows model designation and serial number, as well as locked
rotor amps, maximum operating current, safety pressures and weight.
The compressor has its own nameplate with all electrical characteristics.

WARNING
Use of R450A and R513A refrigerants! Risk of compressor damage!
Migration of R450A or R513A refrigerant into the compressor crankcase could
cause low oil viscosity, which could lead to compressor damage. When using
R450A or R513A it is critical to meet the following requirements:
maintain adequate superheat settings with a minimum superheat of 8-10K;
no liquid refrigerant migration into the compressor at any time, especially
during standstill, during or after defrost, or after reverse mode for example
in heat pumps;
pump-down is recommended (not for Digital units);
the use of a crankcase heater is mandatory;
retrofit to R450A and R513A is only allowed for compressors which are
approved for these refrigerants.
Contact your local Application Engineering representative for any further
information.
NOTE: OM(T)E & OL(T)E units are equipped with an oil separator. This separator is pre-
charged with 3.8 liter of oil.

2.6.2 Application limits
For application envelopes, please refer to the compressor application envelopes which can be
found in Copeland™brand products Select software, available at www.emersonclimate.eu.
OM(T)E & OL(T)E condensing units can be used with an ambient temperature from -15°C to 45°C.
For lower ambient temperatures please contact your local Application Engineering representative.
WARNING
Compressor breakdown! Oil dilution due to low superheat! Low suction
superheat leads to oil dilution. Always operate the system with adequate
superheat to avoid viscosity decrease of the oil. Additional measures in
system design might help to avoid inacceptable lubrication conditions.
2.7 Main component description
2.7.1 Bill of material 501 –general description
OM(T)E & OL(T)E units have the bill of material 501. In general, those kind of units have an air
cooled condenser with 2 EC-fans for condensing temperature control.
A Tandem set of 2 Scroll-compressors (ZB** for OM unit, ZF** for OL unit) provides the required
cooling capacity. One of this compressor is always a Digital Scroll, which allows modulation to
very low part load conditions. Both compressors are equipped with a high efficient sound shell for
best sound performance.
An oil management system with oil separator, oil reservoir and oil injection devices secure
sufficient compressor oil levels.
Electronic controller XCM-25D is taking care for suction pressure regulation, fan speed control in
standard & heat recovery condition, as well as for system safety.
The main safety features provided by the unit: Compressor oil level control, discharge temperature
protection, voltage sensing, refrigerant charge level control & high and low pressure safety.
2.7.2 Housing
Large outdoor condensing units OM(T)E & OL(T)E with BOM 501 have additional housing
features:
New designed E-Box, accessible over hinged cover, adjustable in 2 steps (45° & 90°)

Side panel can be removed only when the unit is turned off. To remove the side panel unscrew 3
screws below condenser first continue to unscrew all remaining screws from outside then remove
the cover by lifting

2.7.7 P&I diagram for OL(T)Q units
IMPORTANT
Absence of insulation on the liquid line in OL(T)E units! Air moisture
condensation and lack of performance! Moisture will condensate on the
liquid line and cause water droplets. The liquid line can pick up additional heat
from the ambient which will adversely affect the sub-cooling desirable for the
liquid refrigerant before it enters the expansion valve. Both the suction and
liquid interconnecting piping between the OL(T)E unit and the evaporator
should be insulated to avoid condensation.

2.8 XCM25D Electronic controller –Features
The XCM25D controller is designed to be a powerful, flexible controller for use in multiple
applications. It has been developed for condensing units and allows the adjustment of all relevant
parameters by the user.
2.8.1 Description
WARNING
Electrical shock hazard! Serious personal injuries! There are unused fast-
on pins (C1 & DO2) on the XCM25D which could be under voltage. They are
covered by insulated fast-on flags in the factory. Handle carefully when
removing insulating flags during service on site.
The controller is designed for usage in an outdoor refrigeration unit. It is rated to be used for the
following environment:
Outdoor controller ambient temperature for operation: -40C to 60C
Ambient temperature for storage: -40C to 80C
Maximum humidity: 90% at 48C (non-condensing)
Board power: 24V AC +15%/-20%
Voltage sensing capabilities - Single phase: 100-120, 200-240V AC ± 10%
Voltage sensing capabilities - Three phase: 200-240, 380-460, 575V AC ± 10%
The units of measure are selectable. The factory default unit is [bar] (always considered relative)
for pressure and [°C] for temperature.

2.8.2 Functionality
The controller allows for easy commissioning by the technician with the factory settings at the
highest program level. It also offers the possibility to make substantial changes to the system
optimization in further programming levels. Advanced functionality can also be activated.
The following functions are covered by the controller:
Condensing unit control, including tandem management
Condenser fan control
Voltage and current sensing (compressor protection)
Liquid injection
Digital compressor control
NOTE: The XCM25D controller on the OM & OL units includes all the functions necessary
for unit control. For additional functionalities please contact your local Application
Engineering representative.

2.8.3 Main control & safety features
Suction pressure control: Each unit is equipped with a suction pressure transmitter.
The XCM25D controls the suction pressure by evaluating the input signal of the pressure
transmitter. The suction pressure regulation for OM(T)E or OL(T)E units has to be defined
by the setpoint (C16) and proportional band (C17). The signal of the suction pressure
transmitter is also used for additional functionalities, pump-down and keeping the
compressor running within the approved envelopes.
Condensing pressure control: Each unit is equipped with a high-pressure transmitter.
The XCM25D controls the condensing pressure by regulating the fan speed
corresponding to the ambient temperature. The unit controller regulates the condensing
pressure with a constant temperature difference to the ambient (“floating HP” ; factory
setting E66 = 8K).
Different control options are available. As soon as fan modulation is enabled (E01 = “2-
Modulated fan”) the parameter E38 allows to choose “floating HP” (factory setting) or
control of condensing temperature inside compressor envelope. In this mode, the
compressor can run different minimum condensing temperatures based on the suction
pressure of the compressor. This is the most energy efficient way to minimize the
condensing temperature as much as possible. But it means also that the fan is running
full speed more often than in floating HP mode.
Automatic liquid injection on OL(T)E: A mechanical injection valve allows liquid
refrigerant to be injected into the scroll set of the compressor to reduce discharge
temperatures generated when the unit operates at increasing compression ratios. There
is a bulb on each compressor top cap connected to the injection valve which allows
individual regulation for each compressor. On Digital models a solenoid valve is
energized in parallel to the digital modulation solenoid valve to avoid injection during part
load conditions. The discharge line protection is realized by help of discharge line
thermostats (S3 / S4 ; Klixon), installed directly on the discharge pipe.
Compressor phase reversal: Ensures that the compressors keep running in one
direction only (clockwise = right rotation) –necessary for a compliant Scroll compressor
to compress and pump refrigerant. Reset is automatic once the phase rotation is correct
for the compressor.
Motor current overload protection: The motor current overload protection is realized
by adjustable motor circuit breaker Q02 & Q03

Fixed high-pressure switches: This is a non-adjustable protection device designed to
prevent the compressor from operating outside of its safe high pressure range. Reset is
automatic.
OL(T)E & OM(T)E models: 28.8 bar cut-out / 24 bar cut-in.
The high pressure cut out device is in the same safety chain like the discharge line
thermostat. The alarm provided by the XCM-25D does not indicate if it is high pressure
or high discharge temperature alarm.
Adjustable high pressure limitation: The unit controller provides the possibility to stop
the unit at a required discharge pressure which is lower than the cut-out value of the fixed
high-pressure switch. High alarm value can be adjusted by parameter E58.
Discharge temperature protection: Each unit is equipped with a discharge line
thermostats (DLT). The DLT’s are in the same safety chain like the high pressure cut out
switches and a common alarm. Each compressor has its own safety chain.
Adjustable low pressure alarm: The unit controller features an adjustable low pressure
alarm managed by the suction pressure sensor. The factory setting of this alarm is the
lowest permitted pressure of the refrigerant with the lowest pressure-vapor properties. If
needed the user can modify this value per the required application.
OM(T)E models: 0.8 bar rel
OL(T)E models: 0.3 bar rel
Option: Adjustable low-pressure switches PS1: This device protects the system
against low pressure operation. It must be adjusted depending on running conditions and
potential special requirements. The compressor envelopes published in Select must be
respected always. In case of controller breakdown, the low-pressure switch is used for
emergency operation (prewired rescue mode components)
A crankcase heater is directly connected to the controller. The crankcase heater will be
energized when the ambient sensor is below a given value (10°C) and the compressor
has been off for a period of time (5 minutes). The minimum off time does not apply at
initial power up.
In addition to the above, the condensing unit has the following features:
Liquid line assembly (filter drier and sight glass/moisture indicator)
Anti-corrosion treatment to the condenser fins

2.8.4 Emergency mode
In case of controller malfunction, the unit provides an emergency operation mode. The controller
will be completely by-passed and the system will continue to run based on low pressure switch
(S7) cycling. The functionality of the high-pressure protection devices (S1 & S2) remain active for
safety.
NOTE: The low-pressure switch S7 in standard configuration is used as a safety device.
When activating the emergency running mode the cut in & cut out set points need to be
adjusted according to application requirement!
2.8.4.1 Functionality:
Rescue mode can be activated by swapping the “rescue mode switch”.
There are 2 circuit breakers (S11 / S12) to activate the compressors (Digital model will perform
like fixed speed model (=100% capacity)). In emergency mode, the system operator needs to
decide if one or two compressors should be activated to provide sufficient cooling capacity.
Switching of one of the 2 compressors by help of S11 or S12 will divide in half the cooling capacity.
A time delay can be adjusted by help of relay K42 to avoid compressor cycling in rescue mode
(Factory setting = 10 minutes). If 2 compressors are activated in rescue mode (S11 & S12) both
compressors are always running in parallel. Also, the time delay is always applied to both
compressors in parallel.
The control of the compressors is done by low pressure switch S7. In standard operation mode,
the S7-switch is used as a safety device. In rescue mode, the settings must be adjusted to
installation needs. The time delay for the compressor starts as soon the cut in value of S7 is
reached. After time delay the active compressor (or both) will run with 100% cooling capacity until
low pressure cut out value S7 is reached and compressor(s) will stop.
The 2 fans are automatically activated with the rescue mode switch. A potentiometer allows
adjustment of fan speed (both in parallel). The fan adjustment must be done in a way that also
during high ambient the condensing temperature does not exceed the acceptable limits. Be careful
when reducing speed because of sound reasons. Risk of high pressure cut outs when ambient
temperature increases.

2.8.4.1.1 PS1 –Setpoint adjustment low pressure switch
There is a pressure limiter for low pressure protection installed.
This device is designed per EN12263 and has an automatic reset.
In emergency mode, the PS1 is taking over the control of the suction pressure regulation. It should
be adjusted per the application needs from case to case. The factory settings of the low-pressure
limiter are defined for safety purposes, not for emergency operating conditions.
