OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

SAFETY NOTES
• Properly installed, operated and maintained, t is appliance will not emit
fumes into t e dwelling. However occasional fumes from de-as ing and re-
fuelling may occur. Persistent fume emission is potentially dangerous and must
not be tolerated. If fume emission does persist, open doors and windows to
ventilate t e room. Let t e fire burn out or eject and safely dispose of fuel from
t e appliance. Once t e fire is cold, c eck t e flue and c imney for blockages and
clean if required. Do not attempt to relig t t e fire until t e cause of t e fume
emission as been identified and corrected. Seek expert advice if necessary.
• Do not fit an extractor fan in t e same room as t e appliance.
• An adequate air supply for combustion and ventilation is essential. Air
openings provided for t is purpose must not be restricted. T is appliance requires
an air supply of 100 square cm.(16 Square Inc es) in order to provide an
adequate amount of air for successful combustion.
• It is important t at flue ways are cleaned frequently and t e c imney
swept regularly. Also t e stove must be maintained in good mec anical order.
Regular sweeping will mean at least once per year.
• If t e c imney was previously used for an open fire, it is possible t at t e
ig er flue gas temperatures generated by t e stove may loosen deposits t at
were firmly ad ering to t e inner surface of t e c imney and cause blockage of
t e fluepipe. We recommend t at in suc a situation a second sweeping of t e
c imney s ould be carried out wit in one mont of regular use of t e stove after
installation. Also, lock or remove any existing dampers in t e flueway.
• S ould it be likely t at c ildren, aged or infirm people approac t e fire,
t en a fireguard s ould be fitted.
• Avoid t e use of aerosol sprays in t e vicinity of t e stove w en it is in
operation.

Installation Instructions
T ese instructions give a guide for t e installation of t e appliance but in no way absolves t e
installer from responsibilities to confirm to Britis Standards, in particular BS8303 and BS6461,
relating to t e installation of solid fuel appliances. T e installation s ould also comply wit local
Building Regulations and Local Aut ority Bye-Laws.
T e stove must be placed at least 40cm away from any combustible materials. If necessary,
any adjoining walls s ould be protected from t e effects of eat.
Chimney and Flue
T e successful operation of t is stove relies on t e adequate performance of t e
c imney to w ic it is connected. T e c imney must:
•Have an internal cross section of no less t an 320 cm.sq (200mm Dia.). (If a
flue liner is used it s ould be 6" diameter for t e 700 17B stove, and suitable
for wood burning).
•Be a minimum 4.6m ig from eart level to pot.
•Be terminated at least 1m above roof level so t at t e c imney does not
terminate in a pressure zone. See Figure.1
•Be free from cracks, severe bends, voids, and obstructions.
•Be connected to t e one appliance only.
•New c imneys must be built in accordance wit local building regulations.
•Existing c imneys must be tested in accordance wit HETAS requirements.
•If t e stove is installed as a free-standing appliance, it s ould not support any
part of t e c imney.
•Voids in t e c imney s ould be avoided, as t ese will prevent a steady flue
draug t. T e stove flue pipe s ould pass beyond t e narrowing of t e
c imney. See Figure 2
•Consideration s ould be given to falling soot. For rear outlet stoves it may be
necessary to provide a soot catc ment area in t e flue pipe so t at soot does
not settle in t e pat of t e flue gases. A flue/c imney access point may also
be required so t at t e state of t e c imney can be c ecked and any fallen
soot removed.
•External flues must be insulated to prevent eat loss.

T e installer as a responsibility under t e Healt and Safety at Work Act 1974 to provide for t e safety of
persons carrying out t e installation. Attention is drawn to t e fact t at fire cement is caustic and ands
must be was ed t oroug ly after use. T e appliance is eavy and care must be taken during andling.
Alt oug t e appliance does not contain asbestos products, it is possible t at asbestos may be disturbed
in existing installations and every precaution must be taken

Flue Draught Measurement
T e c imney can be c ecked, before t e stove is installed, wit a smoke matc .
If t e c imney doesn’t pull t e smoke it may suggest t e c imney needs
attention (see t e Flue Diagnosis Table below).
Note: T is test is only a guide as an apparently poor flue may improve once t e
stove is installed, lit and t e flue is warmed. If, once t e stove is installed, t ere
is any doubt t at t e c imney is providing an adequate draug t, a flue draug t

reading can be taken wit t e stove lit. Two flue draug t readings s ould be
taken, one wit t e stove at minimum firing rate and one at maximum firing rate.
Measurement
T e flue draug t test ole must be drilled in t e flue pipe as close to t e stove as
possible and before any flue draug t stabiliser.
Minimum
T e stove s ould be lit and allowed to warm t e flue t oroug ly. T e air controls
can t en be set so t at t e stove burns on a low setting. Allow t e burning rate
to become steady. T e flue draug t reading s ould now be taken wit t e
t ermostatic air intake closed and t e airwas control fully open.
Maximum
T e t ermostatic air intake can now be opened to allow t e stove to burn at
maximum rate. Give t e stove some time for t e burning rate to become steady,
make sure t e airwas control is fully open and take a flue draug t reading
immediately.
Ideally, t e flue draug t readings s ould range between 1mm wg and 2.5mm wg.
Any readings significantly outside t is range may indicate t e need for remedial
action.
If t e draug t reading is excessive t en a draug t stabiliser s ould be fitted to
ac ieve better fuel burning rates.
Lack of draug t or downdraug t s ould be avoided for satisfactory performance

Flue Stabilizer
A flue stabilizer can be fitted to reduce t e draug t t roug t e stove if
t e flue draug t is too ig .
T e flue stabilizer s ould be;
•fitted in t e same room as t e stove,
•t e same size as t e flue pipe, and
•fitted no closer t an 700mm to t e flue outlet of t e appliance.

Positioning
Figure 4 s ows recommended distances between t e stove and surrounding
combustible materials. As a rule, any surrounding combustible material s ould
not exceed 80°C. T ere s ould be sufficient space around t e stove for service
work.
Hearth
T e construction of t e eart must conform to Building Regulations, must be
firm, non-combustible and capable of supporting t e stove. T e eart must be
fire proof to at least 50 degrees Centigrade. Relevant Building Regulations
relating to eart s ould be observed. T e minimum eart t ickness is 13mm.

W en a Wooden mantle is intended to be installed, at least 18-24” (460-600mm)
clearance is required to t e stove. It may also be required to fit eat s ields in
relevant areas.
Flue connection – 700-17B model Stove
T e flue pipe used to connect t e stove to t e c imney is 6"(150mm) diameter.
T e stove is supplied ready for top flue connection complete wit a 5-6” adaptor.
Figure 2 (left and side illustration only) s ows a suitable flue connection.
Important installation notes:
1. T e installation must allow for adequate c imney sweeping.
2. Avoid using bends greater t an 45° to t e vertical. All pipe flue sections s ould
be as close to vertical as possible.
3. All joints in t e flue system must be effectively sealed.
4. All flue sockets must face upwards.
On completing t e installation, c eck t at all t e internal components of t e
stove are positioned correctly:
C eck - as pan, steel plate, cast grate, perforated sides and back, side/back
bricks vermiculite and metal, front bar, secondary air tube & clip.

Stove Outputs
T e maximum Output of t e 700 17B Model is 8.0 kW (27,296 Btu/ ) to water
and 9.0kW (30.700 Btu/ ) to t e room. T e figures are based upon burning
5.0Kg of wood/ our wit all controls open and doors closed. T e minimum output

is 3.75Kw (12,800Btu’s/ ) to water wit all controls closed using t e same fuel
load. T e water capacity of t e boiler is 7.1 litres.
The Domestic and Central Heating System
T e domestic and central eating system must comply wit BS:5449 Part 1.
W en fitting a joint central eating & domestic ot water system, it must be a
double feed indirect ot water system storage type incorporating rust in ibitor to
prevent corrosion & scale( normally gravity primary & pumped domestic)
A distance of 50 feet in eig t between t e flow tapping and t e eader tank is
t e maximum permissible.
T e system s ould include a eat link radiator to dissipate excess domestic ot
water w en required. Also an injector tee s ould be fitted to promote an
adequate supply of domestic return water, w en t e eating system is in
operation.
T e Boiler Tappings are 1” diameter BSP and s ould be connected so t e primary
flow and return pipes rise continuously to t e open vent.
In order to promote a warm return water temperature a pipe t ermostat s ould
be fitted on t e domestic return and set at 45 degrees centigrade. Ot er controls
suc as a pump programmer, room & radiator t ermostats can all be utilised
wit out affecting t e appliance t ermostatic air control.
Important.
A warm return water temperature to t e boiler is essential w en burning wood to
avoid t e build up tar/resin & condensate forming on t e boiler surfaces and
firebox. A suitable pipe t ermostat or ot er means s ould be attac ed to control
t e temperature of t e return water. Failure to observe t is warning could result
in cooler water temperatures and extensive boiler damage as well as negating
your stove guarantee.
Final Checks
After t e system as been filled wit water, lig t t e appliance and c eck t at all
combustion products are being taken from t e appliance and ex austed up t e

c imney. T e water flow rate s ould be adjusted to suit t e circuit and t e
w ole system balanced properly.
